I have been playing the game 2 or 3 weeks now and I was wondering how people go about meeting others and working together.
Other than chat I don't see much chance for interaction with other players. Am I missing something?
Should I just go into local chat and ask for help or should I join in on the faction warfare via the militia option?
Thanks in advance.

Assuming you are still in an NPC corp, the local corp chat is good place to hook up with others and mine, run missions, get in trouble. -------

EVE is a very social game, but that social aspect revolves more around exclusive groups, rather than just working together with anyone and everyone. Partly because it's very dangerous, as anyone could screw you over at any time.
Factional Warfare is definitely an option if you want to try out PvP, as well as being able to let you more closely work with some people. The classic option of course is to join a corporation. There are many ways to find one, although personally I tend to use the recruitment forum on this site, mostly because I'm always on the forums anyway. But there is also a recruitment channel ingame, the recruitment tool found in the corporation panel (I think, never used it) and even just talking to people in local and inquiring about their corporations.

Yeah, the social aspect exists, but you won't see the "let's all be friends" atmosphere you see in the WoW newbie zones. This is because this is a PVP game where anyone (even newbies) can be your enemy, out to profit from your loss, or can be your victim that you could make money off of.
We're friendly here on this forum, answering questions and trying to make newbies feel welcomed and helped, but you won't see much of this atmosphere in-game. If you join a corp, however, everyone in the corp is immediately friendly to you, and there's an immediate us vs. them mentality.
People are friendly within their groups / corps / alliances, they just distrust strangers. So the advice above, "Join a corp", basically sums up all this text I've been typing.

Yeah, I wasn't really expecting the "let's all be friends and sing songs around the campfire", but I was wondering what one could do to interact with others enough to build up the level of trust required to actually join or be asked to join a corp.
Thanks and any other ideas are welcome.

Talk to people in local, for example. There are some very busy systems where you get some lively conversation.

You can join one of the training corps, such as EVE University, or my alma mater, RONA Midgard Academy.
That's how people get started meeting people with common goals, and having "instructors" in a dedicated chat channel is a huge plus.

Try taking up a support profession that a newbie can handle, like salvaging or hauling. Salvaging requires you train Survey to 3 and Salvaging to 1. Hauling requires you learn an industrial.
Then start looking for folks who need hauling and salvaging services. Whenever I come into a system where I want to do this, I send a "Harper's Salvage in System" About 1 in 4 times someone is running a mission or a complex and would like a team mate to haul loot and salvage wrecks. Haulers fill a similar niche for miners.
The dynamic of hauling and salvaging are slightly different. Salvaging is a time consuming chore that old-timers sometimes spurn. If you salvage, you'll end up playing with more experienced players. Hauling tends to get you working with more inexperienced players or part-time miners. Hauling is an integral part of mining, so an experienced player will already have made arrangements, either by bringing his own industrial, a team mate, a second account, or mining in something with a big ass cargo hold.
The advice to join a corp is good. You meet a lot of other players this way. Some corporations are more new player friendly. My corporation, Guiding Star, is one of them. After you get some contacts and figure out what you want to be when you grow up, you may find another corporation to call home.

Another thing to keep in mind that is more long term, but still worth knowing about, is that the game is getting a major change in the form of an upcoming expansion that will bring a feature known generally as "Ambulation". The essence of this feature is that players will be able to get out and walk around at stations, much like you can in any other MMO. I believe this will have a huge impact on the social atmosphere and the sense of playing in the midst of others. |
