Do you think thats bad? I think advertisment is good for the game.

I did a Google search for Vendetta-online (a crappy looking space mmpog) and was greeted by an EvE advertisment on the front page of the first site I visited.
Talk about cutthroat...... ----------------------------------------------- |

The more adverts the better I say,
providing of course demand to play the game doesn't outrun the capacity of the servers...
It has to be said in the UK at the moment people are becoming more aware of the game... nearly all the game magazines I have bought in the last few months feature an article about eve or in some cases a 3 day free trial on the demo cd's.
People love eve and rightly so in my opinion...

its relli not tht wierd to have such big advertsising for this game.. it is a massive game... breaking its own records 4/5 for players playing.. and it has so much content, and many features.. no wonder people advertise it :)

Well I know I remember hearing some CCP in a dev chat saying CCP would in essance "Relaunch" EVE sometime in 2004 with better advertising...
Some would suggest that CCP didn't make a big noise when it first came out for and one, or combination of three reasons:
1: Simon and Shuster pulled out, or whatever it was they did, that probably contributed to EVE coming out when it did, which many of the more old timer fans of EVE might agree was too early. 2: CCP needed money ASAP to continue/finish development, so they slapped together a playable version that wasn't too god awful and hoped to pay for new developement with subscription money, and potentially borrow against that (or whatever) to do whatever it is they need to do financialy. 3: When simon and Shuster pulled out, it left CCP without a distributor, which meant they couldn't release with the media blitz they had maybe orriginaly intended...
Me personaly without meaning to be disrespectful to EVE or CCP (lord knows I love it now!), I think it was quite possibly a combination of 1 and 3.
But the long and the short of it would probably be, Now EVE is much more already like CCP made it out to be prior to Release (those of us here since release who left and returned will usualy agree EVE is almost a completely different and vastly improved game from the release versions... Nothing really ground breaking there though... Most MMORPGS change a lot in a year. But I don't think as many have made such vast improvements in such subtle ways in that time.).
So armed with a much more complete and enjoyable game, they feel more confidant now about re-releasing EVE to a wider audience... IE shipping more boxes to stores and hitting more adds in game mags and online mags than even durring release (though arguably many of these I hear are the old boxes that probably sat in a warehouse somewhere).
An interesting thing to note is, here in the USA EVE was barely a whisper when it released... Only a few people dedicated to knowing about upcoming space MMORPGS seemed to even know such a game existed...
When I went to buy it from the store, it had barely been on the shelf for 24 hours and when I asked the owner of the store if they had it in stock at first he acted like he never heard of it... then I looked around and found it for myself, and he's like "Oh wow, yeah I forgot about that game, i just put it on the shelf today, I havn't heard anything at all about it, just arrived from the central distributor yesterday." Or something from that effect.
Now normally I might attest that to the guy just being a dope and not keeping close track of his stock or not knowing anything about video games. But it definately wasn't the latter, the guy makes it his business to know what games are going to sell the best ETC and loves playing all kinds of games. So maybe he has a bad handle on his own stock, but even he never heard of it before he saw the box on the shelf.
I wonder if after this new round of adverts will more USA folks be treated to the magic of EVE?
I'm trying to get my girlfriend/fiancee's brother into it... he loves sci fi and space and stuff. He says he heard of the name, but hasn't really heard much about it blah blah blah. So I'm just gonna have to buy it for him with a 3 month subscription for his B-Day next month and see if he'll keep playing it
But in the mean time, maybe he'll run into an add at the store or on the web and decide to try it out on his own .

Am I the only one that takes full responsibility and promotes EVE screaming and shoutning on my local square...? ........ There is a fine line between gate camping and just standing by a gate, looking like an idiot... |
