Anyone catch this today? The first experiment they did was to "wrap" a iceberg in a reflective cloth to try and stop the ice from melting, it seems rather good in theory, but wouldnt this idea be easily defeated with a simply layer of snowfall? I mean this may help atleast stop the melting to that point but I dont see how this would be an effective tool against global warming if they need to wrap 15% of the greenland glacer with this stuff.
I mean if a layer of snow falls onto the blanket then melts, all that liquid needs to go somewhere so thanks to gravity it would go to the lowest point, either an existing melt lake or form a melt lake ontop of the blankets.
Anyone else understand what they are trying to do with this experiment? -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

Sell advertising time. Do you seriously think that The Science Channel is going to be the entity that saves us all?

Its a lovely idea. Just a little bit labour intensive... ------

Hardly, though you have to admit (if your into such things) its rather interesting to see such concepts tested rather than remain forever on paper. I did find the "ethical" questions of weither or not geo enginnering should be done to be rather lame though for many of the ideas they were talking about. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

ya i watched that too it was NEEEEEATE I like the blanket idea but it would have problums when snow falls back on it as mentioned above. The bombing planet with plants seem really nice and actualy seem like it world work if enouth of them would grow and actualy start growing by them selfs with out having to tend to them, also making the planten produce more really seems great to.
alot of great ideas that people think are crazy need to be tried out and done insted of talking about it, its better then sittign around and doing nothing right?
thoue i do agree that too much blimp turbins will probly pull to much energy from the wind and that creating clouds could have a very negative effect on planet as we dont now much about them. and TRILLIANS of reflecting mirrers in space to reflect sun? it seems great but it would be a waste of money as woudent space dust gather on it and cover em up making them non reflective? and the beaming solar energy down with microwaves woudent that disruped signals?
as i said before MENY Great and crazy ideas that are out ther need to be tested and tried but some could lead to desaterious effects ___________________

Speaking of reflective such and suches, a far better idea would be to cover EVERYTHING ELSE in shiny paper. Ice and snow, being white, already reflect a large proportion of heat and light away. All that mud, rock, grass and concrete, though...
I once read a serious proposal that all cities should be covered in tin foil to counter global warning. Seriously. ------

Edited by: Slade Trillgon on 23/08/2008 18:31:58 I give the show one thing, it is pretty objective. They do a good job at pointing out all the negatives to production. They point out that the efficiency between energy need for production of equipment vs energy saved by the process the equipment uses, may not be balanced in the proper fashion. Also, they consistently said how they do not really understand how things work and that the changes that the inventions create could also cause devastating effects.

So protecting a small patch of snow in the arctic is going to stop global warming?
It's not the amount of sunshine that's going to do the damage but the ambient temperature. If the air around the snow starts to increase in temperature, a tinfoil blanket is about as useful as a tinfoil hat unless it's hermetically sealed.
With all that extra light reflected off the northern hemisphere, what about aliens who might mistake it for a navigation light? If it causes too many accidents, the Vorgrons might decide to put out the light permanently. They didn't have any problems blowing Earth up last time to make way for a space highway, why should they worry about an insignificant speck of stellar dust this time round? The mice won't be too pleased about getting this planet destroyed a second time if they are close to finding out the question to 42. Sheez, think of the mice and their experiment this time before you start trying to rebuild the planet according to the designs of humans.

I didn't watch the show, but...
Agreed that protecting a small patch of snow in the arctic is not going to stop global warming.
I like the seed bombing idea though (probably because I had the same idea - I wrote up a paper suggesting that in college).
Everytime I think about it now I just feel sick. Anything we can do, short of some massive worldwide undertaking, is going to be too little, and I just don't see that happening.
I just keep thinking about the polar bears, who are all dying because the ice is breaking off because it's not cold enough anymore; and it's stranding them so far off in the ocean that they drown trying to swim back. I don't know why, but this is the one thing that really got to me re global warming.

They should give that iceberg a postal adress. Then we could send the icecubes from our fridges there.

I hate to do this, but I will not start a link for this video. But when I saw the commercials for the seed bombing it made me think of Pantera's cover of Black Sabbath's Planet Caravan.
Sorry for the hijack, just view if you choose, but please do not comment.
EDIT: RIP Dimebag may you continue to contribute to the circle
