At least with the low/null sec ones you run the risk while trying to get fuel to it as well as just getting to and from it.
With high sec, you have no concerns for the most part if it's fit right. So really, there is no real risk, but a reward of convenience it sounds like by not having to wait for other slots to open up. It sounds like it's still profitable to have one though if you're into research.
It just seems like there should be a bit more risk involved for the owners or an extra cost to run them in high sec since they're fairly tough to take down in most cases.
Your missing a key point, a fully armed deathstar is nothing but an isk sink... If you've still got it set up to make money any sizeable battleship fleet could take it down... Sure destroying one is a pain, but stopping someone from using thier's to make money is as cheap as a wardec... ç¦ |

You have to remember a few things when thinking pos combat though.
It's NOT warp in and begin firing at the pos point blank.
1. PoS weaponry have different ranges and often you can out-snipe the pos mods 2. You destroy offensive pos modules FIRST, these die WAY WAY faster than the pos itself and once they're gone even the meanest death star is a kitten 3. PoS module placement makes all the difference, two batches one on top and one under is correct placement, most people fail hard here, and given that a pos bubble is many many km across this affects wether or not you can snipe the pos
Things like this.

There is risk in everything you do in EVE :P
For starters as many people have pointed out they can be taken down no matter how well set up they are... it's all about how committed you are. Secondly you don't see a risk in having 2+ billion Isk worth of equipment hanging out there in space largely un-manned? What kind of money you got friend?
Also maybe when I said 'turn a profit' it was mis-leading... how about it's more like when my corp isn't at war I'm not losing money :P Like I said before once the dec comes I shut down all those labs and online all the guns so for the remainder of that war I'm losing money.
It's worth it to me though, maybe I'm losing some money over the course of a year, but my corp benefits from nicely researched BPO's that I didn't have to wait in que a month for, maybe I make some money back selling copies, or maybe like has been happening lately we are on the giving or receiving end of war-decs most of the time and I'm not making ANY money off it. It's all relative anyway because I can 100% guarantee to you that POS setups like mine are not the norm in hi-sec, believe me when I say I saw enough junk one's while searching out a moon for mine to fill up all the moons in Caldari space :P
But what are you getting at? Nerf POS? Go ahead, I'll move mine to low-sec and it'll be a few more jumps to the market. And I guarantee you other people will either do the same as me or just not bother because I know I wouldn't waste my time setting up some underpowered thing in hi-sec for any nub merc corp with a couple of BS to come along and pop. Oh yeah and I'll laugh at the people with a 'new and improved' 6 month to a year que at the NPC station labs, have fun with that

There is a risk of having 2 billion in mods hanging out there but that risk is so reduced once the thing is put into Deathstar mode.
I am aware there are very poorly fitted and unattended POS's out there though that are fairly easy to pop.

I think you would less get carebare rage and more 'alts for null sec corps who want perfect protection for thier industiral assets' rage. And that is something that CCP listens too... |
