I recently train interceptor and have an Ares and Taranis fitted, Lost my Ares to a nemesis and wondering if someone could offer some tips on how you engage another ship. I lost my Ares i think because i appoach and once i got to him my ship stop and he hit me with a salvo. My Taranis can do about 5k+ and Ares around 6k+ with nwd
-Do i approach and orbit once i am close or should i just hit orbit from a distance and let the ship get closer and oribit -Do i keep my MWD on all the time even while orbiting -My ship is going so fast with nwd i am not always at my orbit range so i can be at optimal how do i fix it
I could use some tips with Ares for tackling with web and scrambler 10k or 20k and for my Taranis more for combat with blaster and web and scrambler.
Thanks in advance, i know is a lot of info any tip would help

First lesson of interceptor combat is NEVER GET IN WEB RANGE. A webbed interceptor is a dead interceptor. Keep the speed up and keep outside web range.
Once you have some more experience, you'll be able to understand when you can get in a little closer, but for beginner interceptor pilots refer to the first lesson.

A good tip I have is learn to orbit manually. You can usually just use the orbit button but keeping a good eye on your distance and being able to manually adjust it to prevent drifting out of scram or into web range will give you a clear advantage.

Never hit approach, as a general rule. Certainly not from relatively far distances. If you just approach a target, your transversal velocity will be exactly zero (if the target is stationary), meaning that you'll get hit for full damage by any turrets that you're in range of. Approaching long-rang battleships is just asking to be popped in a single volley.
If you hit orbit, then your ship will try to intercept the orbit trajectory and so you'll be flying slightly off the centre-line and thus have some transversal. Against known sniper ships you'll probably want to manually approach in a spiral until you get near your orbit range.

Yes. Speed is your life. If you turn your MWD off, then you're slower than a MWDing battleship, and you'll get caught, webbed and die.

Set your orbit range to be a few km lower than where you actually want to orbit at - but make sure this is still 13km or above, else people will be able to web you during your initial pass. Additionally, don't focus solely on maximum speed but also on agility. Fit nanofiber internal structure and inertial stabilisers as well as overdrive injectors. Depending what role your interceptor has, you may even be better off with a lower (straight-line) top speed and higher agility, as this will likely let you keep up a higher speed when actually in orbit. You can test this easily - find some object without anything else around it (likely a sentry gun, or drop a can in clear space) and orbit this at different distances, noting the speed that you can maintain. Try this with different fittings and see the effects of higher agility with albeit lower max speed. Agility is extra nice in that it also lets your ship "react" quicker to other ships suddenly changing direction and trying to manouver you within 13km.

The Taranis is very experience-intensive (I don't want to say skill-intensive as this isn't about SP). You need to be able to assess the combat capabilities of your opponent and yourself, and commit to fights that you know you can win as you will deliberately be going inside blaster range. One thing that is pretty much a given - is that you should be doing this with a Taranis (the Ares is better for tackling), and you must fit a Damage Control II. There's so much structure on a Taranis that this will be your primary tank, and will give you the boost to EHP that you need for your blasters to finish off a target before he can get you. Ideally you'll need to know about transversal and combat mechanics so that you can do what you can to minimise the damage the enemy does to you while in web range, and of course you can only ever engage solo targets.
The Ares is a lot easier: 1) Orbit the target at 25-28km 2) Keep a T2 disruptor on them (which will have up to 30km range with the interceptor bonus) 3) ??? (probably "your gang warps to the warp-scrambled target and destroys it) 4) Profit
You can fit guns to an Ares but your damage will be so low it's almost irrelevant. The job is just to tackle and keep a point on the target until your gang gets there to finish the target off. Here again, agility is very nice as it will let you hold your orbit outside of heavy neut range but inside of your warp disruptor range. The higher you've trained your Interceptor skill, the more of a band you have to play with here (as well as being harder to hit).

So, am I to understand that all frigates (not just interceptors) need to fit a MWD and weapons that hit further then 13 km? Doesn't the grid/CPU on a T1 frigate preclude that? Or do I just need better skillz?

Thanks a ton for the suggestion i will make sure i practice a lot, will be focusing on interceptors for a while and can use most of the T2 stuf except the web and scrambler and i am currently working on that.
Manually approaching and orbiting will take some getting use to but i think i can manage it. I didn't know about the 13km web good thing you let me know since i though it was just 10km guess the Ares has a bonus for a reason.

Baka and Gartel give nice advice about how to handle a interceptor in general. But kinda odd they talking about web and transversal when you lost you ship to a nemesis. Dont get me wrong, their advice is fine but you dont get killed because of the low transversal since cruise missiles dont have tracking problems, also a web in a stealth bomber its like a parachute in a submarine. At your full (MWD) orbit speed you wold outrun missiles (if orbiting, after the initial aproach) if the nemesis pilot had low missile projection skill. Even if that was not the case it wold greatly reduce the damage dealt since you wold be much faster then explosion velocity of his missiles. Avoinding 80%+ of the damage this way its not unlikely. The problem is that if you rapidly decrease your speed, be it because you hit aprouch or just because you let your orbit to strech the missiles are likely to hit at your worst moment, when you have low speed (because the change of direction) but high signature radious (MWD on).
My posts DOES reflect the view of my corp and ally... ..or a mistake they did when let me post. |

I think that with any small ship the trick to winning is choosing the right battles and knowing when to run away. If you are in a frigate of any type, a stealth bomber is not the right battle. Yes, an interceptor can speed tank the cruise missiles, but if you're a newbie at flying your ship, you're just as likely to make a mistake and then one volley will pop you.

No, you have to think differently. Instead of thinking "all frigates should fit MWD", think "don't take frigates into fights they can't win."
An interceptor uses speed to attack ships that will one-shot it at the slightest mistake. It's like using martial arts to fight someone with a gun. You've seen The Matrix, right?
A T1 frigate doesn't have the speed bonuses. It WILL get one-shot. Only option is not engaging anything that will one-shot you. If you're a regular guy and not a black belt, don't be in the vicinity of someone with a gun. Or, bring many friends, so that he one-shots some of you, but he cannot shoot you all down fast enough.

Gotcha. So, unless you have a group of 20+ T1 frigates, don't fly a T1 frigate.
Good to know.

I think you take it too far. True, when going against a BS having a good number of frig pilots is necessary if you're not trying to commit suicide. But there are lots of targets other than BS that a much smaller gang of frigates can handle, and more than a few that a solo frig can take down.
You just need to be able to pick your fights, and the frigate's relative agility is ideally suited for that.

As long as said frigate is T2 or a Rifter, Incursus, or Punisher, correct?

if you're in a frigate, don't attack stealth bombers.
the cruise missiles they shoot have a greatly decreased blast radius. and increase explosion velocity. so it'll be great in taking out frigates, since they will still do the same damage as they used to. it's a frigate with a battleship weapon capable of hitting small objects.
