I just recently started playing again and was doing well manufacturing and trading. After getting up to around 150mil I made a very costly mistake. While putting a laser damage rig on the market I somehow misplaced a decimal and put it up on the market at a high enough price that the broker fee was 115mil. So now I am down to about 600k isk in my wallet and trying to work my way back up.
Any advice anyone can offer to help get my money back quickly would be appreciated. I am just kind of posting here because I am rather frustrated at the moment.

Well all make this mistake at some point. Remember this: TAB is your friend. After typing in your price (or adjusted price) hit TAB, not ENTER, and look at it. This will spare you mucho pain. As to any advice to get your money back faster, you'll get it back faster this time as you won't have to do as much trial and error. I'm contemplating loaning you a bit of change to help you get back on your feet but I'm of two minds about this: 7 Month toon at worth ripping off so small an amount however 160M after this much time(?!?) doesn't bode well of your activities or skills.

Doh! That sucks. Typos like that kill me.
You may want to try petitioning it, just in case a GM feels sorry for you. It can't hurt.

That is a good idea. Mind you it is a hail mary play.

Edited by: Ceola Tyn''Vile on 26/08/2008 14:25:05 Yeah I guess I will make my money back faster since I know more of what to make and sell now. Thanks for the consideration of a loan but I should be ok. As for my characters age it is partly because I quit playing and decided to come back and give it another go. I was just pretty aggravated at losing most of my money.
oh and I did open a petition I just did not mention it because I am pretty sure it won't do any good, but I wasn't about to not try.

i don't mean to be nasty, but this is why idiots don't get massive fortunes, same applies in real life.
oh and petitioning it ? the fact that a GM might pay you back disgusts me and is an offence to EvE itself.

The broker fee was 115 million? How many decimal places were you off?

3 I think. I updated the price and it lagged so I thought it did not update.
Kyusoath Orillian I am sure you are perfect in every way and have never made a mistake in your life.

Lag that happens when you're adjusting prices is a real annoyance - and I've noticed the more buy/sell orders you have up, the more often you get lag, as the more often the wallet will flash and the more often the application will freeze for a few seconds. I've also noticed that sometimes it will catch up to your typing, and sometimes it won't. Annoying.
The other decimal related thing to watch out for is when you think you don't already have a decimal place in the number... but you do. Any decimal point you then type is ignored, so rather than entering '100.01', say, you've actually entered '10001.99' (where the '.99' was already on the end). This 'feature', coupled with the lag feature mentioned above, makes it all a bit hit and miss sometimes. I've had enough costly mistakes in the past to be very careful, but it makes an already tedious job that much more time consuming.
TAB is your friend, and keep an eyeball on the '% of regional average'too - at least make sure it seems sensible before you hit enter.
I do hope this all gets streamlined in the future - I think Eve is starting to give me RSI.

Best solution is to send all money that you don't plan to need soon to an alt character. That way you can't screw things up and loose all your money.

Would Eve-bank do something like that? Where you can store your money your not using and get it out when you need it?
P.S. I have been trying to get into the habit of hitting tab when setting up and modifying orders. I am paranoid now.

eBank (Eve Bank) is very useful in this regard however depositing and withdrawing are given to some delays. In other words, it is not a very "now" process. Originally by: Ceola Tyn'Vile I am paranoid now.
Paranoia is good. Now(!) you are learning the game.

I was not whining I was just seeking some satisfaction in knowing I was not the only one to make this dumb mistake while trying to warn others of the same thing. And I did get some solid advice in tab > enter.

Which is about the only trading advice I offer to new traders for free. Well and the one about, "Buy low, sell high". --

Edited by: Andrea Griffin on 02/09/2008 15:37:02 This is one of the reasons why I don't bother with the decimals in my buy/sell orders.
I trade in stuff where the margin is 50k and up. A few cents here and there aren't going to be missed, and I don't run the mistake of having a misplaced decimal point.
I've been very careful about this ever since my first experience with a misplaced decimal. Thankfully, it was someone else's mistake and they ended up buying my stuff for about 9x the fair market value. (o:
Even so, I personally wouldn't mind an optional feature that adds a second price entry box, where the price has to by typed into both boxes to ensure they match before the order can be approved.
And I say optional because, personally, I'd rather not have the hassle, but I know that other people might find it a very helpful safeguard.
Edit: I started a thread about this in the Features and Ideas forum, if anyone is interested.

This happened to us recently as well. Instead of the price with a decimal and 2 digits, the number 3 was substituted for the decimal unknowingly. Broker fee was in excess of 80 million isk. We petitioned and CCP returned the broker fee.
I am certain that this issue is why the new change in the current patch to warn players who are listing prices in excess of 100%.
CCP clearly is not wanting market trafficing to be so painful that it drives legitimate traders from the job.
