Edited by: Glengrant on 27/08/2008 09:53:15 Hi,
see this: http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=855678&page=1
Ventrilo is a pain to get running on Linux, plus you can't set up your own server beyond 8 people. And for all its good voice quality it's latency is not so good (tends to lag a second or so). TS still uses OSS (on Linux version) and v3 (with supposed ALSA support) has been promised soonish for ages.
Mumble is cross-platform from the start, low latency, free, open source, unrestricted, low overhead and full featured. In short it has been designed by players for games. IMHO it's the future of voice com for games.
And now (see link above) a fellow EVE player made his server and bandwidth freely available to the rest of EVE. I tried it and got my own channel right away. Nice guys. Kudos to Sythyss for this great service.
I know - if your alliance/big corp already is on Vent/TS then Mumble is not a realistic option atm - network effect and all.
But if you're looking for a voice com for your corp - use Mumble and be ahead of the curve. :-) --- ISK BUYER = LOOSER EVE TV- Bring it back!

Nice work!
Now it's just a matter of finding a corp that doesn't follow the network curve and has learned to appreciate Mumble for it's superior voice quality.

Mumble is great. Lightweight, good voice quality, easy to use, easy to install...
Oh yeah, and I can actually see what it does by reading the source, which is always a plus.

Not to mention you don't have to pay 14 cents in royalties per user so the "developers" can sit on their rears and do nothing for a product that hasn't been updated in 4 years and is awash with security vulnerabilities.
Still, Mumble's biggest fall, is the lack of a builtin registration system. Not to mention the name, which to the "average" gamer, reeks of flaw ansd failure...

Quite a few of the Mumble core community people play EVE, even the lead dev slicer was playing trial last week, but found it a bit slow :P
Anyway - as for the simple registration, there have been a number of patches to have a quick registration option on the context menu, If you look around I'm sure you can compile your own admin client with one of these, else make a simple page using either ICE or dbus to register new users, it really isnt hard and the examples provided in the SVN are very simple to modify.
As for actual issues with EVE, we know a lot about overlay troubles, however its pretty low on the list - if you have trouble with Mumble, remember to disable it and hope ;P
Otherwise, please use the sourceforge bugtracker and read the wiki, its been getting lots of love lately ;)
