Edited by: Louis Petrelli on 28/08/2008 03:22:41 Edited by: Louis Petrelli on 28/08/2008 03:22:23 Hello EVEers,
I have recently created a (very) basic iPhone Skill Monitor and am planning on developing it further and I will hopefully release it in the App Store and possibly make it Open Source. Oh, and I am also taking ideas for a name. I just randomly thought of EVA because I enjoyed WALL-E but if people like it then it won't change. =D
And I'm terribly sorry for the ! portrait... I am rather new to the game and I guess I'm not worthy enough for a picture..
Right now, I would just like to show you my progress and maybe get some support and maybe even some people to help me with it.
Here is what I have so far... http://screencast.com/t/Uw6LRr0HXL
It is in the very very early stages and is missing a lot of features and the interface is horrible but everything will improve over time. And as you can see by the video, I have eliminated the problem of the evil API key, and all that is needed is your username and password to log into the EVE website. (Note: Your username and password are not being stored as the only thing that sees them is the UIWebView)
Well that's all I have for now... So if you have any questions/comments/concerns/random stuff, you can either send me an EVEmail in game or send an email to louis.petrelli (at) gmail.com
Cheers

Don't worry, it will show total isk, skillpoints, and of couse your current skill in training. I left that stuff off because I just wanted to get this video out there as soon as possible. The API doesn't allow you to stop and start skills so it won't have that feature. Thanks for the feedback and support and don't forget to check back for news on the progress of the app.

is this also compatible with the ipod touch? and does it work going to other way(in the horizontal direction opposed to vertical)?

Yes, it will work on the iPod Touch and I'm planning on it switching views when it is turned sideways.

Edited by: Mike Soup on 28/08/2008 21:27:15 Would it be possible to add an option to disable the skill list? So that the only thing that would come up would be what you are training with important info like rate, time to completion, and what time it would finish(like the bottom of evemon).

I actually thought of having it like that for the horizontal view. I'll write the code then post a video and see what you think.

omg, this is great. I would be all over this app when it comes to app store, no matter the price. and if you're planning to release it for free, think about adding a premium version with extra features, I believe there will be demand!

Cool as this may be, I would advise you to request the mods to move this thread to general discussion. This forums isn't exactly very popular and you would probably get a lot more feedback in general discussion.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Anyone know how to contact a mod so it maybe can be moved?
Right now I am PLANNING on having only one version that is free because I'll have plenty of time in the future to make apps that cost money and I still want to make this open source.
I'm not quite sure when it'll be done but I'm pretty busy with school (boo) right now and hopefully I'll be able to work a lot more on it in the following weeks but once I get more done I will keep the first post up to date on the development status.
Thanks everyone!

/emote is impressed by that flick
It look really sweet.
The only thing I would ask, do you have the ability to enter the API key directly ? Because entering my account details (User name + password) and then scraping the userid and key off of a page would leave be with a bad feeling.
Why ?
The whole idea of the key system is so that you never have to enter your EVE account details anywhere.
And it is an inspiring UI, I might think of changing some of EMSP to be similar to that. -- EVE Mobile Skill Planner V3 !! http://evemsp.sourceforge.net/ |

Very true, that is the purpose of the key but you aren't exactly "entering" your information into my application. But please do note that the "thing" you are entering it into is an instance of UIWebView, I dunno if you have signed up for Apple's Developer Connection but basically it is the same as logging in to the http://eve-online.com website on the Mobile Safari. My whole reasoning behind extracting it from the webpage was that I would never want to type out a 64 character long key on a normal keyboard, let alone the iPhone keyboard and I don't anyone would like to either... That is also one of the reasons I would want to make it open source, so if anyone was nervous about signing into the EVE website, they could look at the source and find that it is, in fact, legit and safe to use.
Thanks on the compliment though and I will definitely let the user key in their own API information but the default will be to use the website.

Ah yes, I was debating on whether or not to do Skill Plans... It would be great of course but would take a bit more work. Maybe once I get EVA onto the App Store with basic monitoring capabilities then I can take on the Skill Planning. Thanks for the suggestions though!

You should get in contact with the creators of Evemon to use their skill plans in your app. It would save a lot of time. Good luck with your program ----------------------------------------

It would save a lot of time if EVA was written in C# and used the same frameworks that EVEmon did but like many iPhone Apps, EVA is written in Objective-C and uses the Cocoa Touch API. |

Love it, and gave you 5 stars. As mentioned in my review, your training time calculation needs to be a RoundDown function, to more accurately reflect the time remaining, although this only makes up to a 1 second differece, so no biggie. --- All 359 skills trained. |

Heh... I think you meant to post in this thread.
But just for a little update, it now shows the currently training skill and how much time is left and I also made some huge UI changes that no one will ever notice but it cut down on a lot of code that wasn't needed. ------
