Well EVE has two graphics engines currently - regular and premium. I propose CCP add a "basic" version that would both allow low-end computer owners to play EVE, and would also allow mid-range computers to participate in larger fleet encounters with less lag. (High end users might be able to participate in very large fleet encounters with reduced lag as well!)
I have a 2.4 ghz single core with a Radeon 9600 pro, and the game lags for me a _lot_ during cluttered missions and pvp encounters. I do play the game at a high resolution, but that's so I can fit more UI stuff on the screen. :) I would love to have a graphically primitive version of EVE that ran smoother.
From a development perspective, such an engine would probably be pretty easy to make, too. :)

People have been asking for a "wireframe/icon" version (or similarly simplified version) for ages... but to no avail.

Game lag is generally considered to be a network/server side problem, so changing the client would do nothing.

Proof of this claim, please.
For god's sake, if your computer can't even run the regular client, you're a. playing on a C64, in which case I pity you b. trying to play on your iphone, you pretentious pr*ck c. failing
With how long it takes for CCP to implement user-requested features, what makes you think that they should spend time creating a whole new client, where they could invest a bit less effort in, oh, I don't know, fixing the corp interface? |

Edited by: Koyama Ise on 28/08/2008 21:54:02 Somewhat similar to what the person said above me, the amount of people with computers that can't run the normal EVE-Online Client is rapidly decreasing, which is why this most likely will never happen. You can pick up a computer nowadays for probably under $300 AU not US and it'll be able to run the premium graphics slowly, all you need is a 2.4GHz P4, 6600GT and 1GB DDR ram. That was the setup I used for a long time. Also... make sure you don't have anti-aliasing on... or the premium graphics. ----- Cause it can't be quoted enough.

may I direct you to: CCP Lingorm in this thread over here and also this little thread which points out the fact that lots of stuff has to be done one one single CPU core at a time and hence can't keep our clients up to date quick enough not to lag (module lag etc.).
There's tons of this sort of thing which if you read between the lines explains why the game lags. Old discussion on why more hw != better performance
Obviously client lag exists but it's typically caused by graphics settings / non-tweaked overview settings / or a patch of poor latency between you and eve.
BTW no need to insult people. ~~~~ There is no parody in this thread. Honest. |

Ignoring the graphical tweaks you could try, if you're on a 'node' which is handling lots of other systems the 'nodes' load has to take into account all of them when processing. It's doing it's processing on a single CPU core. Unfortunately it's pretty much impossible (anyone?) to identify which nodes are running only a small number of systems. For your mission running you could try finding a system with slightly lower quality agents that has less players in it. Game the system a little. ~~~~ There is no parody in this thread. Honest. |

For god's sake, if your computer can't even run the regular client with tolerable framerates in even large-scale fleet combat, you're a. playing on a C64, in which case I pity you b. trying to play on your iphone, you pretentious pr*ck c. failing

I have a 4 year old high end laptop, a dell inspiron 5150. Its got a 3ghz single core intel CPU, and a 64mb mid-generation geforce, I think a 5200... and a gig of ram.
Lag aside, the framerate goes to crap in battles over 30.
If my framerate was ok, then I'd be looking to network as the issue, but its not. many of the standard machines people play on just can't keep up with the display requirements of large fleet battles, even if its more than adequate for everything else in gameplay.

You cannot have anythign simpler. Because the classic client is already DX7 the most primitive and simplistic real 3D api existant (no GLIDE was NOT really 3D, you had to make the projection yourself in code then throw to the damm raster API).
GUI is slow because has a lot of transparency and transparency @#!@#&! up with the VGA internal algorythms to save fill rate. Implementing less quality woudl not change it the fill rate used would be the same unless you remove stuff from the interface. ------------------------------------------------- If brute force doesn't solve your problem... you are not using enough

Common sense dictates that the "lightweight" client (if it would ever exist) :
* will support no transparency effects whatsoever * will have very low polygon count models, maybe even turning into icons when far/small enough * will have very small texture sizes, or even an option with no textures at all (just simple shading)
Think "X-Wing" (1993) or "TIE Fighter" (1994) level of graphic detail for the "lightest" version of the client... just higher resolutions possible, if available on the machine it runs. Ideally, the lightweight client would be able to run flawlessly on any device able to run any Windows version, even mobile ones. Granted, you won't want to run missions nor PvP on a mobile device, but only because you lack screen real-estate... but trading, manufacturing, skillswitching or even hauling stuff through empire space... why not ?
