Laying back in bed last night, after reading all the Nerf X space/boost Y space threads about, I wonder if the solution to lowsec could be to give them valuables you can't get anywhere else really. Maybe specialized pirate NPC missions/location occurances/complexes wherein you can actually track them (and need to warp disrupt and web them and actually fight, maybe have to take them down to just structure) to pry out these new secrets. Ways to manufacture what though? If I could pick one thing that would really make things interesting... Implants and deadspace gear. :p From the good gist to the snake/crystal/ etc sets as opposed to needing to mission for hours upon weeks.
(to clarify, location occurances could be something thats quite like getting a faction spawn except it triggers a mission chain or something similar. (You engage them, and let them run, and suddenlly you can probe them out and find a nice deadspace complex/base or something similar.) Another one bites the dust. |

Insane Ideas? Here's a insane idea:
Shift lowsec from 'no real security here' to 'no CONCORD but some low security here'. This means, add faction police that'll help you out against attacks, meaning you won't be completely SOL if you get jumped mining or something. But they'll only help you when you have good standing with the faction controlling the area and the higher your standing, the faster they come over and the more ships they'll bring.
Insane enough?

The biggest problem with making low sec more valuable, is trying NOT to make it farmable and discouraging people to camp the areas. I think low sec is good as the dirty rat infested space between high sec and 0.0.
It is where pirates without a home can call a home. If you're looking for ideas, how about making all of low sec systems "claimable". Something in-line with sovereignty, but not as deep and detailed. Make systems "claimable" if you can go thru a tournament of battles among others trying to claim that space. It can be set up based on ship types and number of players. Once you claim the space, you get your own station. Or something along that lines... turn low sec into something encouraging fair fights to achieve something, but yet retaining the low sec ganks and griefs of pirating.

Im willing to bet that around 90% of the people that want more people in lowsec are the pirates. People come to lowsec > pirates blow them up > they don't come to lowsec again > pirates complain not enough people for them to blow up in lowsec.
Simple.

Well yeah, that's why 99% of "boost lowsec" posts are usually "nerf high sec". People don't want low sec to be more profitable, they just want risk free pvp

I'd remove the security status hits. If people want to pvp without POS bowling and alliance blobs why punish them for it. If this is done, casual pvpers would venture more often into low which would mean more fights and more life in low sec.

Edited by: Clair Bear on 28/08/2008 23:33:14 You know, I'm gradually coming around to the idea of boosting lowsec. Put in something that is TRULY valuable. Valuable enough for 0.0 alliances to move in -- otherwise why bother? People will stay out of lowsec and head straight to 0.0 as they always have.
Then the pirates whining about not having enough pew will get to experience the *TRUE* nature of eve. 30+ man gangs with sensor boosted tacklers on all gates and stations. Local that can swell to 300 on a moment's notice. Fly a nano recon or die screaming.
So yeah, screwit. Let's do it. Boost away. You think carebear tears are something? I want to see pirate tears when they finally get their wish and can't undock because a couple of multi-thousand member NAPed alliances moved into the neighborhood. Can't go to highsec because of standings and can't go to 0.0 with their mains without joining an alliance as a drone. Relegated to farming L4s in empire with their cash alts.
Can't wait. Can I haz that now, CCP devz?

Just make iso and nocx only available in low-sec. That provides a structural reason why lots of people have to go there, mine there, trade there, etc.
If the "criminal element" gets too strong, and the prices of iso and nocx go through the roof, and BoB can't build caps like they're T1 frigs anymore, they'll have to come clean it up.
If you want to boost low-sec without it being a de-facto nerf to 0.0, you have to provide a reason that people MUST go. Otherwise, people aren't going to. They will jump from empire to 0.0, which is generally a safer move.

Originally by: Clair Bear People will stay out of lowsec and head straight to 0.0 as they always have.
This quote says a lot about this debate. It's pretty obvious that many, if not most, of the people against nerfing missions are newer people. Clair Bear, for instance, obviously did not play the game prior to mid 2006. By that time, I joined my first alliance. It was a low sec alliance with 0.0 ambition. You see, at that time, the natural progression for players was high sec - low sec - 0.0. After several nerfs of low sec, coupled with boosts of 0.0 and high sec, low sec was skipped over. Now people go direclty to 0.0 or not at all.
The argument that people always went directly to 0.0, however, is erroneous. In the past, low sec was a step up from high sec rewards. Not a step down as it is today.

There are faction spawns in low sec, just not at all often, and usually frigs/cruisers, that don't drop anything valuable than tags/ammo most of the time. Ofc, there's the rare occasions when they actually drop a good item or two... maybe more wouldn't hurt..

So, one must as, was the reasoning aginst that idea as it adds a reason to go to low sec)?

If you're asking what I think you're asking, the answer is no, we simply haven't implemented it yet. I'm trying to get it put on the roadmap for the next 6 months or so to add at least a few. Let's see how that works out :)

How about being able to flag yourself for pvp, so that you will not be engaged by gate guns if you open fire on another flagged person. You can only change this once every hour (or something similar) and this will give you an idea of who else are seeking semi consensual pvp in the system you're in. Just a thought. *cough*

When you are in low sec (all over EvE actually), you ARE tagged for PVP. Low sec and 0.0 just make it obvious. Gate guns are a deterrent, not a safety switch.

Nope - I'm not a pirate, but I enjoy flying in a more risky environment than highsec - the sense of danger makes the game a far better experience in my eyes. The only problem is that beyond that sense of danger, there is currently no point to be flying in lowsec. - Running missions isn't worth it as there is no significant advantage in running l4's in lowsec compared to highsec and l5's aren't worth it either... Having tons of incredibly stupid NPC's in missions that require you to fit something completely different than you would for PvP doesn't help the matter either. - Why should anyone mine in lowsec if you can do it in highsec or just kill some drones in highsec and reprocess the compounds? (don't know if it's worth it, as I figure the market for rare ores is firmly in the grip of 0.0 alliances. So basically, what's broken is the risk vs. reward for non-pirates. As a matter of fact piracy is the only rewarding thing you can do in lowsec (and I doubt it's all that rewarding, compared to high sec piracy), so that's where current lowsec demographics come from.
Originally by: Jaden Killemall I'd remove the security status hits. If people want to pvp without POS bowling and alliance blobs why punish them for it. If this is done, casual pvpers would venture more often into low which would mean more fights and more life in low sec.
Well - if you want lowsec PvP without sec status hits, you can just join FW - not that it's rewarding in any way, but meh...
Anyway - I think the sec status hit should indeed be removed or lowered in lowsec and most ores should be removed from highsec (or the respawn-time for belts in highsec should be increased drastically), which would also have the nice side-effect that high-sec macro-miners would be pretty much history. Corps would actually have to organize mining convoys which would make things a lot more interesting for all involved.
Considering L4's I think moving them to lowsec wouldn't work due to said problem with the incompatibility of current PVE and PVP setups, but I think they should be nerfed drastically. Best thing would be if a new kind of high-reward missions with few 'smart' NPC's would be introduced in low sec, so a PvP setup is what you actually want to bring into a mission, but I have serious doubts CCP can program any smart NPC's...
I'm not trying to dictate my playing style on others - if you want to mindlessly grind risk-free L4's in highsec in a CNR, go for it, but having a reason for an individual/corp to move to lowsec without an intent to pirate would make sense...

Just call it something else...
Anyway, anything along those lines will open up for pvp at gates and also makes it easier for people seeking, ie. a 1v1, to cross paths.
You can't deny that it'd provide more pvp situations.
