Lately I'm seeing all these people posts topics about how "EVE is dying this", "We're heading towards WOW that", and I'm getting a bit frustrated by all this.
Well why exactly would that be the case? Just because something changes from the way you're used to it's automatically bad? Something becomes harder or easier to do and it's bad because 'back in the good ol day everything was better'?
This is prolly one of the oldest phrases on the EVE forums: Adapt or die.
As simple as it may sound, it's true. You can complain all you want, the change is going to be there and it's going to stay. So you can either adapt to the change, or leave the game.
This probably seems pretty random so let me clarify a bit. As I was reading another one of these 'everything was better 3 years ago' topics a thought came to me that served as a nice comparison.
What about old people? Just take a minute and think about the huge amount of change they saw and had to adapt to in their lifetime. There are things like mobiles phones, computers, internet. Societies having changed dramatically over time. Schools have become less strict, youth these days have no more manners then piece of gum stuck on the sidewalk. Police has become stricter in some places, less strict in others. The entire world map has changed in the period these people have been alive. Countries have risen and fallen, think of the Soviet Union. I could go on but let your mind at work. Think about all the stuff that wasn't around on this planet 90 years ago.
I know it's kind of a stretchy example but it goes to show that change is everywhere in the world and that those changes are not always done with your approval or work in your favor. The same goes for EVE. If CCP left EVE the way it was when it got out of BETA, it wouldn't have been the huge game it is today just like we would still be lighting candles in street lights every evening if nothing ever changed. CCP is doing their best to constantly expand and improve EVE and as a result they create problems which they hadn't foreseen. But by the time the problem becomes apparent everyone has become accustomed to it and found a way to live with it. So when CCP decides to set straight a problem they themselves created earlier, the community yells at them for trying to fix a problem that was never intended to be there. It's a bit backwards if you ask me.
Of course it's annoying if something is changed in the game directly affects something you took ages to build up. If you skill up for that uber battleship and the day you are able to effectively fly it it gets nerfed, of course you get ****ed off, everyone would be. But things wouldn't get nerfed if there isn't some sort of problem with it. Remember that EVE is still a game, and that it's meant for fun. There is no fun if some part of the game is flawed, allowing people to abuse the game and ruin other people's fun. You wouldn't like it if some dude on your poker table was 'allowed' by the dealer to see your cards before the game starts. No, you'd be ****ed because it's not fair and the same goes for EVE. It might be a very player controlled world, a very player controlled market and have a lot of realistic aspects to it, but it's still a game and that means it has to be enjoyable for EVERYONE. Not just for you.
Bit of a confusing story, I know :P. But the bottom line is this:
Because EVE is so huge there are some mechanics that were never supposed to be there in the first place. Take suicide ganking. This is an ability that I'm sure was never supposed to be there. It's not a problem if it's not being exploited on a large scale but as soon as it starts to affect the game experience of too many players it does become a problem. And at that point people need to respect that CCP wants EVE to work in a certain way. Not your way, their way.
If you can't handle change then you're free to leave. Someone else will fill your place. EVE won't die just because you lost your favorite tactic.

Suicide ganking was and is supposed to be there.
Now CONCORD, they weren't originally meant to be there.
Your post, despite it's length, misses the core point; that EVE serves a niche, and that while 'adapt or die' is a nice little witticism, it doesn't change the fact that if EVE becomes WoW in Space, that niche disappears. -

People have been saying that same thing for years. Something they thought critical to the game is changed and at least for them, its dying. Doesnt fail.
Yet, more and more players keep coming. ----------------- Friends Forever |

Change is good. It's constantly changing. The Eve of the past will not be the Eve of the future. I'm all for constant retunes and modifications. Stirring the pot and letting things settle anew.
The abuse of game flaws will always be there, at first they may seem harmless, but when more and more do it it becomes an issue. Whether or not its within game mechanics doesn't matter... what's best for the game and its future is what matters. Case in point... nanos, they are getting nerfed. They were fine at one point, but when you rentire community see nanos as the only option, CHANGE is needed.
So yes, adapt or die... rather, deal with it or leave.
I deal with it... I stand my ground and voice my opinions on what I see as imbalanced and debate it. I've played over 5 years and can usually tell when abuse is for griefs and doesn't add anything to the game experience. One will say, well... its part of the game... but I'll agree with that if it doesn't exploit loopholes and bring about unfair advantages. That's the main idea there. Exploit all you want... more will do it... and eventually too many will do it... ruin the gaming experience, paint the devs in a corner, and change will come.
It's a vicious circle. It will never be perfect. --------------------------------- Pithecanthropus erectus, a name derived from Greek and Latin roots meaning upright ape-man. |

Most of humanity fears change and things new to them simply because it means they are no longer on the leading edge. So when there is something that they can control, or think they can control, they do what they can to retain their status at the edge, in the case of gamers, its complaining about a change that isnÆt fully understood or means that they would no longer be at the edge. Its really that simple.
Take for example the complaints by suicide ganking and the upcoming security changes. The argument is that it is going to be phased out, but the facts are as presented by the devs that this is far from the case, it will rather be moved to situation of waiting for the ideal moment, basically a machine gun user being told to learn how to be a sniper. So instead of casually, with little or no consequence depending on where you ôliveö in eve, suicide ganking someone enjoying their way of play, suicide gankers will now have to think very carefully if a target is worth more then the lulz.
In short, its human nature to *****.
