I'm currently piloting a Bantam (2x Miner 1, expanded cargo bay) but it's not got a massive capacity. I've been saving up and I want to get myself a much more serious mining ship, initially for 1.0 systems then into less secure ones as I get more experienced. I've got caldari frigate skill at 3 and starship operation at lvl 1, what should I be looking at in terms of ship and skills to allow me to pilot it?
EDIT: Maybe a Caldari cruiser? Or should I take another race of cruiser? What sort of ISK are we talking?

The Rolls Royce of Cruiser mining is a Thorax. You can run 5 Miner II's and 8 Heavy drones (Combat for defence in low sec).
This setup is not cheap though. You are looking at around 6/7 mill for the ship, another 1mil for drones, CPU boosters and bits. You will also need to train up a whole bunch of new skills including Drones to level 5 plus Drone Interfacing to take full advantage of the setup.
All in all, including buying new skills you are prolly looking around 9/10mil including insurance ...
I suspect you are a loooong way from using this but keep it in mind as you will end up using a Thorax once you have got the money and skills. Its far cheaper than a B'Ship equiv (by maybe 10x's) and does not mine that much slower.
Good luck on fining a lightweight step up to get you your Thorax.

If he's looking for a lighter setup until he can purchase a Thorax-Royce ;) I suggest the Vexor..
Its a great little mining cruiser!! Its cheap, Has excellent cargo room and drone cap too!

A thorax is indeed very good if you mine in a can and pickup with an industrial. For pure solo mining a vexor is a better choice. An orther advantage of a vexor is that it s a very good all round ship for all missions till you hit level 3 missions.
mining setup
high: miner II s
med: shield booster, shield extender, afterburner
low: cargo expanders and cpu/grid boosters as needed
courier setup
high: empty
medium: microwarp drive, afterburner, cap recharge modules
low: cap rechargers, overdrives, cargo expanders as needed
combat setup (mission)
high: dual 150 or 250 railguns, smartbomb
med: afterburner, shield booster, shield extender
low: tracking enhancers, damage mods, overdrives, cap rechargers
in all setups as much combat drones as you can use

If you dont want to train for a whole new race which can take anything from 1 week to 2 weeks, then go for a caldari cruiser.
The best one for turrets is a Moa, it can have 4 turrets (4 miner 2's) but costs alot, the normal price is 7mil.
For the cheaper option you could go for the blackbird, that can have 3 turrets (3 miner 2's, and only costs about 3/4mil.
Just raise about 5/6mil and buy a decent cruiser and you should have about 1-2 mil left to spend on equipment and skills.

If you want a cheap and cheerfull cruise to mine in I would recommend the osprey. 3 miners and a reasonable cargo hold.

I'll be solo mining, so I think I will look towards picking up an Osprey at first while looking to progress to a Moa.
