I've been screwing around with mods and rigs for salvaging L4 missions in one shot no matter how large the payloads. This is what I've maxed out with.
Highs:
3 or 4 tractors/4 or 5 salvagers (depending on personal preferences)
Mids:
AB/MWD depending on mission/time you have to kill Large cap battery T2, 2x Cap rehcharger T2
Lows: 6x Cargohold expanders T2 or 5 cargohold and 1 nano because its a pig
Rigs: (controversy ahead) I use 3x cargohold expansion rigs for max cargo and on most missions that lack metal scraps I use 1 giant secure container in the cargohold. This gives me 4103m3 cargo space.
Salvaging 5 helps with the success rate and salvaging entire missions only takes a few minutes longer then if I had salvage tackle rigs.

I hear Gustav is salvaging New-Orleans quite good at this time. |

You might want to switch one of those cap rechargers for the 'other' propulsion mod, so you have MWD and AB fitted on the same ship. I've never run into cap issues while doing this, and it means you can use whichever is appropriate for the situation (i.e. MWD if possible, falling back to AB if it's deadspace).
Other than that - yeah, it's pretty standard, and yeah, it's a real pig to get moving with the 6 expanders. I prefer the tackle rigs myself as I've never found more than 2000m^3 of useful stuff in a level 4 mission, and it's probably just as quick to take a few less cycles and then have to warp back to station to dump things as it is to carry everything in one go but take a few cycles longer with the actual salvaging part. Horses for courses really, and it's not like tank or DPS where it affects the actual outcome beyond possibly a minute or two. I like the tackle rigs as they still give their benefit when salvaging a small wreck field, while the cargo expanders are 'wasted' if you could have got everything in the cargohold without them.
Oh, and don't bother picking up the metal scraps (or keeping them when you salvage them), each one is worth about 2.5 ISK. |

Yet each unit gives you 10 units of tritanium. Very handy for the bigger production jobs in ships or large quantities of modules as in my experience you are short on tritanium and pyerite earlier then the more "high end" minerals. If you have the cargohold to loot the metal scraps, it's a nice little bonus for the industrial ppl in your corp/ industrial side of your character.
It all comes down to personal prefference i would say

Bit of a newb question, I know, but is it a case of complete the mission and then use this ship to salvage, rather than salvage as you go?
I've always salvaged as I've gone along. Never really thought about doing it another way. |

CCP are great, people do missions for fun, it's an alternative to mining. CCP then decide to add salvaging which means we have to mine everything we kill in order to get the most out of it.
Isn't Eve fun |

Personally Zantei, though this is a bit off topic, I enjoy reaping 3mil in reward from a 200k L1 mission... |

Couldnt put it any better! Honestly. Blockade/The Assault lvl 4 usually nets me... 15 million? And with my Nightmare, and salvage Cane that usually boils down to like an hour and a half per 15 mil. Sure it may not be 0.0 belt ratting but damned if its not a whole lot safer. |

It takes you an hour to run any mission? In a nightmare?
I hate to say it, but you're doing it wrong. 30mil easily, easily per hour with a nightmare.
Edit: looks like I misread your post, carry on |

I use hurry-cane salvager along with my caldari main to run missions. She (the ship) is equipped with highs full of tractors/salvagers, in mids she has one MWD and one AB (depends if mission is deadspace or not) plus cap rechargers, lows are full of cargo thingys. Rigs are 3x salvage rigs, but I'm not 100% sure you need those rigs. All they do is give you better chance of successfully completing salvage cycle, amount of material is the same either way. With 4-5 salvagers in highs one wonders how faster it is to salvage those T1 wrecks (with salvaging 5 and those rigs you salvage pretty much everything in one cycle).
Anyhow, this setup givem me enough space to loot and salvage all lvl4 missions, except some which drop lots of scrap metal and cap booster charges. I hate scrap metal. And cap booster charges.
That said, 'cane is the best loot/salavage boat I flew so far. Quite fast, lots of cap, lots of cargo space. Added bonus on tractors or something might be nice tho (hint, hint, nudge, nudge, say n'more, say n'more, know what I mean?). |

I will try the ab/mwd combo instead of the 2nd cap recharger. Thanks for that info. Other than that I usually salvage and take everything back to my hangar and leave it in a station container while I grind mission after mission. I then open the station container and realize it may take me 3 hours to sell/reprocess all the crap I picked up since the time I signed on lol. I send scraps to my alt for refining to build stuff later so they do come in handy eventually.

Yeah, that's exactly how I fit my salvage 'Cane.
4 Salvagers/4 Tractor Beams T2 AB T2 MWD 2x T2 Cap Rechargers 6x T2 Cargo Extenders 3x Salvage tackle
With this fit I can put salvagers on two different wrecks at the same time (2 on each), and almost always get both ships on the first cycle... while pulling 4 more wrecks to me at the same time.
Not sure there's a better loot/salvage boat out there.

I like this one, with the Large T2 AB, 5 Tractors and 3 Salvagers.
