Yea, so I go in to work today, to have the personel director come up to me 2 hours later to tell me I'd been fired and that I wasn't supposed to come in today. They thought someone had already told me last Friday... Anyway, I've never been fired before. The feeling is like someone took a baseball bat and swung full force into my stomach... Anyway, this is the first time I've ever been fired from a job. Now, I'm only 23, and I realize I'm still young, but how am I supposed to react? I WANT to go down there and tell them all off, but I realize that's a bad idea, for more than one reason. How do you handle this and move on? I don't know, I really just wanted to vent. Maybe this isn't the place for it, but meh, ignore the post if you're not interested... Anyone have any useful advice for me though, like what my next step should be? (Aside from the obvious "find another job, dumb@$$" remarks)

Well it sounds like you're already taking it pretty well actually if you're willing to think about what you do instead of just running in there and smacking some people around. That's good. Personally I have been fired 4 times, all from the same company which re-hired me every time on account of being unable to find anyone else to take my position. I am now the Boss of said company and I find that really quite funny how it's all worked out.
Don't let it get you down though, it may not seem like it but there are other jobs out there and who knows, maybe this is a first step down a whole new branch of your life because like you said, you're still young. Stay positive and it'll work out.

I've been fired twice. Once from Peterbilt after wounding myself on the job and from Winco and thinking back on it now both companies did me a favor.
For Peterbilt I was heartbroken at the time because I considered that my first real job (although I was just a janitor).
As for Winco I considered that a release from hell as they were making me stay for god awful long days (up to 18 hours) 6 days a week then berating me at the end of the week for having so much OT + I was trying to move then too. With the amount of money I had saved up I took a month off and relaxed. Not to mention I was being told to break several OSHA violations with the heister each night.
Out of curiousity, what did you do and what were you fired for?

While I can't disclose exactly what I did, I can say I built electrical components, for a Department of Defense contractor. They "let me go" (such nice terminology for GTFO) because this last week I botched a project slightly more than can be viewed as "normal". Being as I've only been on the job 1 1/2 months, I see this as the learning phases still, but apparently they do not. Especially since I'd never done this kind of work before. Maybe I should go back to tele-sales. Just felt icky doing that, as ripping people off as nicely as possible, seemed ethically unsound to me. Freighter Service Available |

Edited by: Shadowsword on 02/09/2008 17:36:55 Been fired once on a trial period, because of a 2 minor mistakes that might have had dire consequences. The thing that hurted the most was that those charged to teach me about the job made it look like that was nothing when it happened, so I didn't become more carefull as fast as I could have if they had insisted a bit. I learned later that their attitude behind my back switched in full "it's-all-the-newb's-fault-cover-your-ass" mode.
It's been a good thing, overall. There, I truely learned about bureaucratic hypocrisy, and that's a lesson everyone need to learn. And I found a new job much closer of what I wanted to do, better paid, and with at least a good ratio of nice workmates, who'll tell you in your face if something is wrong. ------------------------------------------

I've been fired twice in my life. Trust me, it never gets any easier. Regardless of the reason, it always feels like a gut-punch. The best thing to do is to try and learn from the incident. Often, you will find that you end up being "Kicked Upstairs" by the episode, and end up ahead of where you were before.
This happened to me just last year. I was let go from my Network Admin position. Not because I had done anything wrong, (it was my first position and I was actually working alot of extra hours so I would do well) but because the company had run into hard times, and of the two network admins, I was the only one NOT the nephew of the VP. *shrug* it happens. Not much you can do about it either.
Thankfully, my Unemployment Insurance covered all my bills and mortgage and enough left over for food while I looked for more work. It took me just over 3 months, but I ended up landing an easier job (less responsibility, less stress) in my field that pays me 5 grand per year MORE than I was making previously.
The trick is to get over the frustration as fast as you can, try and learn from the experience, move on, and minimize the impact of it on your job searching. IE: Don't say "I screwed up a project" say "I was placed in charge of a project well above my current skill level. While I enjoyed the challenge, mistakes were made both within my project team and in management that resulted in the project's failure. While I personally fault no individual for the failure, management decided that they would task someone else with the work, and let me go. Obviously this was disappointing. However I still enjoy a challenge, I have learned that communication regarding my skill level and capabilities is key to ensuring I am placed within the appropriate team environment."
As you can see, couching your response in non-inflammatory and non-blaming language defuses the situation to a simple human resources error, rather than a personal tragedy that you are still carrying baggage about. Nothing screams "don't hire me!" like bitter, emotional diatribes about "the jerks" you used to work for.
Good luck, be sure to update your resume, and stay positive. You'll be back working again in no time.

When I got 'let go' from my first real job in accounting, I just maintained my composure, and left a huge pile of paper on my desk, basically all my work part way through doing it. Mind you I was a temp, but I didn't see that coming so it was sort of a shock and I lost all my drive at that moment to continue. Though I do feel bad for the other 2 clerks as they have to sort through that mess and figure out what I did.
Stay positive, you'll get another job, eventually. /goes back to searching out employment. -------------------------------------------------- Everyone is born right handed, only the great over come it.

Edited by: Danton Marcellus on 02/09/2008 18:27:09 I've been fired once. I apparently didn't exude the proper amount of flair during our unpaid for lunchhour working as a contractor within another firm. Hell I didn't know it was a formal or I'd worn my glass slippers.
Another time I wasn't really fired but told 'don't call us we'll call you', once they did I just ignored the call and went back to sleep. All very Office Space moments, union saw my side of the story and backed my claim of the employer being an ass so I suffered no further financial losses due to quitting the job. I'm guessing I got fired upon and returned fire there.
Oh yeah, tip, see Office Space the movie. Also possibly avoid taking a swing at your manager, it may have been partly responsible for the 2nd incident no-one but no-one comes screaming insults at me in a foreign language and invading my personal space, boss or no boss.

Edited by: Slade Trillgon on 02/09/2008 18:39:04 As said above it sounds like you are handling the situation well enough to not flip out. But the only advice I can really add is do not follow Goodby4us' suggestion to hit a wall. Broken fists are likely and are not going to help the situation. I personally like going out to a metal/punk show for a nice session of controlled release of aggression wherever I want to flip my top.
As for myself I have been close to getting fired once, but my employers did not have the backbone to fire me on trumped up charges. They kept me on till I quite after I finished using my vacation and 2 commitments I had previously made to the people I worked with. Actually my situation was quite funny, but I will not get into it, it is way to long to type out.
Being serious though, just start looking forward and working towards some new goals. Let the past stay where it is. Easy for me to say at this point, but that is about how I have tried to run my life for the last decade.

I've never been sacked for anything. I've been let go where my employer (Panasonic) we're winding down the factory. I was an agent employee, so about 1hr noticed to leave the premises were given.
The weird part was after being let go, they then called me the next day to do some work, at the end of that day I was promptly told not to come back into work tomorrow. Day after that I was offered a months work, which lasted two days.
So after being let go 4 times in about 7 days, I told them to get stuffed and don't call me again, but not in such colourless words and metaphors.

never been fired, been come close once. I think at the moment here in Perth, Western Australia that there is such a labour shortage that the only reason you would be fired is OHS violations or major incompetence, the first job i worked they were so desperate for workers (they had me working 12h days/ 60+ hour weeks, with 75 staff, when I started it was over 170!) that you were more or less bullet-proof, my supervisor was an idiot (and spent 90% of his time chasing tail, and EVERYONE knew it and he wasn't fired) so I more or less made his life hell for the few minutes we interacted each day
as for being fired there is nothing more satisfying for you (and less satisfying for them) than to start a higher paying 'better' job within the week

I'd like to just say, if a trainee f**ks up while being trained or certainly within 1 1/2 months then i'd say that THEY have failed to train you correctly. I've had to train many people, i'll be there as long as they need me and untill i know my job training them is done. Don't beet your self up about it, get back on the horse as they say and move on!

Thanks for letting me vent/listening to me.
Step 1: forget them. They're in the past. Just make sure you get whatever's due to you (holiday pay, pay in lieu of notice, etc).
Step 2: register for job sites and a couple of decent agencies now. Dunno about where you are but here, well, there's still lots of jobs but employers are suddenly a lot more picky.

Edited by: Fink Angel on 03/09/2008 11:22:06 First, make sure they pay you for today. They didn't tell you on Friday. You wasted today. Their fault.
The word "fired" has different connotations in the UK, as it tends to mean you are removed from the job for some wrongdoing. I guess you're from the US?
Don't go down there and say or do anything nasty. You'll almost certainly need a reference for your next job from them.
Anyway the US/UK employment laws are so different and advice I offer would probably be no good for you, so I'll stop there.
However good luck with your job hunting, this may have a silver lining. A friend of mine was sacked from his job, decided he was no longer going to work for "the man" and is now running his own business pretty successfully.
Edit: As someone above said, start looking for a new job today. Don't think "I'll have this week off and take it easy".

The job am in now - sadly it pays alot more then what I can get of a day time - & I really do need some extra day time work at the moment UK wise, I mostly work with events talkin to lots of people, sorting out games / wetTshirt games anything to please the crowd really, I also manage a small team of staff who I rely on to meet the targets given by my bosses & such.
I just wish I could find a day time job aswell as keep doin what I do of a night time but sadly I dont want to work in a office doin paper work or a really boring repettive job.

Let go and fired are in my mind two very different ways to exit an employment, one is where they downsize their operations and the other is when they have work but not for you specifically for whatever reason.
I imagine everyone has been let go at least once, to get fired you typically has to make an effort or more often a non-effort.

Well, kind of. When a company I used to work for closed its gates I found myself on the street. Even though it wasn't anything personal as everybody had to go.
At another time I left by my own choice and got called back after like six months :D
One time I got kicked in the arse (not literally ofc) for not participating in an inside embezzlement. The guy whom I refused got promoted above me after a year (General Manager). His first move was to invite me to his new office and hand me the official document stating that I was out of my job. Since he couldn't come up with any reason to simply fire me for misconduct we settled on a mutual agreement. I still believe that I did the right thing. I could have ended up before a court.

Where I work the risk of being fired is virtually non-existant unless you go stealing stuff from the store. Even some guy who called in sick for weeks in a row and was out of work more than actually there wasn't officially fired; just advised to leave.
One of the advantages of not having any training and being told to do stuff... You can screw up as much as you like, and it's not your fault.
