I read somewhere around here that in EVE Online, if something bad happens to you its YOUR fault.
So is it...
1. Anything goes, ALL is fair. 2. its only Real PVP when it starts with no advantage, or 3. Real PVP only happens in Low/null sec, or 4. Don't hurt me.
What do we want this game to be exactly?
I've been playing casually for about 4 months, I choose number 1.

PvP is player versus player. That means any situation where players are competing against other players, be it combat or another form.

Number 1 is my preference here. Of course, this is also assuming your talking about combat PvP.
On a side note, I see nothing wrong with having some space patrolled by NPC 'cops.' I really disagree with how omnipotent they are, how they can respond to a dozen crimes at the same time, how they ALWAYS know when something happens, or how they don't respond at all below 0.5.
But yeah, number one is the sandbox of EvE. Within the rules of teh gameworld, anything goes. Number two is what you get when someone thinks that dueling is the only REAL form of honorable combat, like some knight or spaghetti western cowboy in a white hat.
Number three is what you get with most mainstream games, which allow PvP to happen on in regimented areas.
Number four cannot be solved in an MMO, and is only true in single player games.

PvP is when one player contends with another for advantage, whether in combat, on the market, obtaining resources or frustrating the other's objectives.
Missioning is virtually pure PvE. Ratting is PvE with PvP elements as is plexing. Mining is PvP with PvE elements. Trading, manufacturing and invention are mostly PvP with miner PvE elements. Pirating nearly pure PvP (trace PvE elements like sec hits and gate guns remain). 0.0 warfare is pure PvP.

well, personally i have never PvP'd (yet), but from information gotten from friends in EVE as well as these forums, it seems to me that PvP mostly consists of who can drop the biggest blob / gatecamp upon the other team of suckers (more or less).
In that sense, i'd say its a pretty long stretch to call it PvP when a 10 man gang nukes a hauler or something coming through a gate, but to each their own :)
As for your alternatives, number 1 should be the one applying, as long as its "legal" (IE, if its not, you'll be visited by Concord).

You have a romantic idealistic conception of combat (ie: a thoroughly unrealistic one). Combat in EvE is not a tournament where honourable knights compete for reputation and respect. It's where sneaky, ruthless, treacherous people struggle as hard as possible for high rewards and to avoid sharp losses. In this respect it resmbles "real world" combat.
The tourney-style fighting you have in mind is occasionally staged within alliances for entertainment. It bears no more relationship to real combat than medieval tournies bore to actual medieval wars, which were generally brutal, savage, treacherous and careless of collateral damage.

hehe, not at all, i just said that i dont see what a random gatecamp ganking people have to do with PvP. Thats PvT, or Player vs Target, skeet shooting, target practice, call it what you want :)
It would be different of course if its in 0.0 / claimed area and someone is patrolling their area of space against intrusion.
For fleet battles, they are all fair even if its 200 against 10. Its not the 200 guys fault that the 10 couldnt summon up more support, nor should the 200 be penalised for it (other than in general lack of targets, hehe). I just find calling gatecamps for PvP to be quite a stretch, thats all :)

Edited by: Feilamya on 02/09/2008 18:17:58 PVP is a marketing buzzword, which was invented for games like WoW and earlier carebear MMOs. The existance of the word suggests that competition with other players in a game is optional, and that you might also want to subscribe to (and pay a monthly fee for) a multiplayer game to play a single player game while chatting with your friends.
Today, most players use the term PVP for all aspects of a game that were formerly known as "multiplayer".

Someone else elegantly stated that PVP does not revolve entirely around combat.
You should try making isk in Jita by trading.
Words you need to add to your question regarding combat are:
- blob - gank - fleets - command ship + bonuses - classification mismatches (hauler vs combat, recon vs frigate, BS vs inty) - PVE fit vs PVP fit - nano, shield, armor tanks
All of the above are part of how combat happens in eve on a daily basis. If you walk into a fight and you were not prepared, it is 'YOUR' fault.

PVP is trying to beat the living snot out of others, be it with pewpew, market or anything else. Wether there's a reason or just for fun.

GVP (gang v player) or aven CVP (cowards v player) since Most gatecamps disperse quick when more than two ships come through at the same time. Honour in this game has become a meaningless word in recent times and real PVP doesn't happen any more like it used to 3 or 4 years ago. Now most players won't even consider PVP combat unless the odds are 20 to 1 in their favour. Generally many lowsec gatecamps run home to mummy when anything more dangerous than a noobship or hauler comes through. Try going in a gang to break up a gatecamp in lowsec and they normally disperse without you ever firing a shot. Very few will stay to duke it out.

I though that PvP was where you go out with your alt, shoot NPCs then count who got more kills.. or was it T1 heavy launchers.. or ... fried circuits..

PVP is just all player versus player encounters. That however doesn't mean that there is no unfair pvp or stacked or just simply frustrating pvp. :) |
