How common is the login queue?
I mentioned it in newb-corp chat and no one had seen it, but I was in it last saturday and tonight I am 238 in the login queue!
I'm assuming that this is a good sign in that the population of Eve is growing.

Everytime that I have seen the login queue it has been a bug.
Simply close the client and restart it. It is unlikely that you will find yourself in the queue a second time around. |

Sometimes they ramp up the server after a patch or after the daily downtime, instead of opening the flood gates, but most of the time you shouldn't see a queue. |

After a patch CCP will often throttle new connections to avoid 45 thousand people logging in at once and tanking the whole system.
After things settle down you won't see a queue any more.

Actually tonight it was definitely the rate at which people were joining rather than total as there were only a couple of 1000 online at the time.
Makes sense I guess. |

I've only seen it a couple of times, and it never took long to let me through. |

Often it's a case of your response and Matalino's. They're throttling the logins, but it's not nearly as bad as it appears from the screen. If you relog, even when they are throttling it, you'll generally notice that you've jumped up considerably in the queue, as they've opened a few more thousand connections.
It actually took CCP some time to realize that having thousands of people log on at one time didn't work. One would think this was common sense, but apparently not. But now they have figured out the right amount to let on at each moment and it only takes a few minutes for many thousands of players to log on, instead of the old days when they let everyone try at once and spent hours rebooting the server until enough people gave up and did something else so that the truly masochistic could manage to log on.

The main reason it takes so long to see progress is that the queue is there to alleviate network traffic on the login server. because of that, the queue is only polled every 30 seconds or so by the client, just as server status is at the login screen. Usually by that time you will be admitted without further waiting.

The log in queue is purely to throttle the amount of people trying to log in at the same time.
This may cause problems with the servers so generally it is after patches or hot-fixes only.

generally closing the client reopening it and logging in lets me skip the queue
although on amargeddon day doing that just put you at the back and you have to wait 600 or so places
