Just got done watching the TTH interview that's being touted on the home page. The CCP guy being interviewed seemed very proud of the new "certificates" system coming out. Seems we will soon be able to present our graduate certificate in the art of "tackling". Who the hell asked for this fluff?
So, packages of skills that, together, make you a proficient (hauler, tackler, industrialist, etc.), and a certificate to prove to a recruiter that you have them? As if he couldn't just look at your skill sheet? Is this so that new players don't have to figure out how to train their characters?
We have a lot of features in this game that are in really dire need of some lovin' (cough *sov* cough cough). I'd really, really like to know how this made it to the top of the development priority list.

Thats the new leveling system. It should provide you with a feeling of accomplishment when you acquire your new certificate.

I think it will be used for E-peen waving, gives goals and a roadmap to specific professions and roles and it will change how you recruit players. As for the reason why a priority, I don't know. New features get introduced all the time even when there isn't much demand for them. Maybe this feature came up as an answer to a issue they had or question they got asked often enough.

It's not that big of a deal, Somealt. It's something that might let newer players look and see "oh, here's some recommended skills I should be looking at if I want to try out Mining", for example. Helpful guides, is how I see them.
Yeah it's fluff, and useless fluff for those who've been around, but for newer players it might make things a bit more structured. That's not a bad thing.
And I'm sure it isn't taking half the development team a year to work on either, so sovereignty changes (pretty please) won't be kicked in the beanbag because of it.

Edited by: Sidrat Flush on 03/09/2008 16:34:56 I absolutely love the idea of certificates.
IF they display the skills and levels required to get that certificate then it'll mean new players will be able to train their skills much more effectively than they can now.
It'll also help recruiters out by seeing for themselves that what the character is telling them is true - up to the fact that they CAN launch large t2 bubbles and fly an interdictor, although of course it doesn't mean they have or ever will.
It's a good introduction for new players and as for older players it may show them a different avenue they didn't think of themselves.
Does anyone know if these certificates will cost anything, such as an issuing fee from the agent? Should it cost isk to be issued a certificate?
Now if CCP could promote their in game recruiting advertising feature more it'll be an extra bonus.
Life is about memories the more the better.

I can see this being a useful tool for corporation recruitment. Instead of posting a long list of prerequisites to apply to join, the corp simply says you have to have x, y, and z certificates. Makes things simple.

The biggest thing the Devs are worried about (and yes they are working on the rest) is new player retention...that is, many newbies don't know WTF to do and end up leaving because of it.

not surprising, since their future pay checks may depend on it. By giving new players something clear to strive for with those certificates they hope to improve retention and as such maintain the game's current rate of growth.

The way I see it is EVE is a very difficult game to learn off the start. This is more of a thing to help new players get into it more. I drop out rate after the trial has got to be high considering all the people I know that quit after the trial. They were just lost and I unfortunately didn't have as much time as I would have liked to help them. But if some things like this are incorporated maybe more people will continue playing past the trial which is good for all of us.

Look that's not your game, nor are you a major shareholder of CCP. The owners of the game are free to develop the game the way they like and they are not accountable to you. Who are you to criticise them because they brought something that you didn't ask for, while not improving other features, which YOU want to see developed ? Why don't you make your own MMO and make there a sov. system you like ? You can always make proposals in the proposal board, but criticism like this in a tone of command is not appropriate.

Nobody can look at your skill sheet unless you give out an API or post it online. Imagine if nobody could see your sec status unless you posted it online... do you think pirates would?

Yeah, I dunno, just struck me as an odd thing to be "excited" about, or to make a development priority when the "end game" is essentially broken right now.
It's kind of moving eve toward the "classes" that other games have, which in essence are pre-defined role-based templates.
I have always kinda liked that Eve had a steep learning curve. It gives new players incentive to seek out more experienced players and get advice, and in the process, make some friends and get to know people, you know, the "M" in MMO.
I've seen other games go down this road. When EQ first came out, no individual class could do jack by itself. You relied on other classes (and therefore other players) fairly heavily. Over time, it evolved a "yellow brick road" new player experience and classes became far less inter-dependant. Result was you increasingly had a game full of soloists running around, rather than a community.
I'd hate to see Eve head too far down that road.

Mayb you don't like it, that's fine and you DON'T HAVE TO USE IT (<-please read again).
You don't have to get certificates, you don't have to train that last skill to get a shiny thing that says "I can do X". Look at it as pointers, nice help, fuel for the roleplayers (I ain't a RP'er but i can still see a big potential of RP here).
For me, i really welcome this idea, because it means i might be able to clean up on some areas/skills, i can "see" what i can do and what i've trained up to do and show it off. Yes, i can look at my skill list and see what i trained up, but with certificates, you can also see what you need if you thought you had somthing trained enough.
Although i hope you can choose what to show and what to hide and i also hope for "Advanced" or "Tech 2" certificates, showing you can either do a full T2 fitting or you maxed out all of your skills in that area or somthing like that. Simply to show you are better in X thing than Y thing, but you can still do both of them. Signature! |

There I don't agree with you. I know from former statements on the issue that the devs have no intention of turning EVE into a system with classes that locks players into a particular trade or style of play. No, I don't see that happening at all, and I don't think the certificates move the game in that direction. These are nothing more than a system which will allow players to easily show other players sets of skills that they have mastered. It doesn't lock a character into anything and it doesn't establish limits on what skills can be trained in the future.
