I know nothing about cap ships as I don't fly them but it is one of my longer term goals.
My Alt loves drones & already has Drone interfacing 5 so it seems logical for him to go the whole hog & train for fighters.
How effective would these be at level 4/5 when deployed from a Thanatos which is my ship of choice. I know I can punch the figures into Evefit but what are fighters really like as a defense & more importantly how do they differ from ordinary drones in respect of what they can & can't do.

They tear bc's and bs's apart however they are not great against any other capital as any cap pilot with lvl 1 in capital skills would be able to tank them with ease. Sig removed, inappropriate content. If you would like further details please mail [email protected] ~Saint |

you mention lvl45 missions.... forget it... carrier is a pure pvp/logistics ship.. not a carebear mission runner.
when ppl try to run missions in them.. they usually die rather fast to pirats... new travel very fast ---------------------------------- Fighting for Minmatar o7 Yes... this is my main. Extreme Troll Slayer...

Sorry. I might have confused you-I meant at skill level 4 or 5 NOT mission running.

Edited by: Meichi Li on 03/09/2008 15:59:56 Fighters are a terrible defense. Your support fleet is your defense. If you don't have one, those fighters aren't going to save you from anything other than a gang of 3-4 battleships. Fit smartbombs + neuts and carry Warrior IIs to break tackles, then cyno out. Fighters are for offense.

haha... sorry for the confusion :P
aye... like others said... your fighters are quite bad defence.
even aginst a 3-4 man bs gang you are probably going to die... if they use remote reps.
best defence is your friends :)
first and foremost.. you are logistics support. ---------------------------------- Fighting for Minmatar o7 Yes... this is my main. Extreme Troll Slayer...

Ordinary drones are limited to your drone range. Fighters do not have this limit and will warp after your target through the whole solar system. Furthermore you can assign fighters to other ppl with drone skills who can control them like their regular drones (they only need the basic drone skill at V to control five of them) and again the fighters will follow the gang member who controls them unless he sends them to a target.
Important sidenote: when the fighters attack a target the carrier pilot will get an aggression countdown as well as the pilot who actually controlled them.

The main problem with the Thanatos is that its bonus to fighter damage only applies to fighters directly under its control; any fighters assigned to fleet members lose that bonus. This means that if you want to use your fighter damage bonus you need to be up in the action and in that situation you're better off remote repping your fleet. The damage bonus doesn't hurt mind you, it just detracts from the carrier's more important mission of fleet logistical support. -------------------- "I am hard pressed on my right; my centre is giving way; situation excellent; I am attacking." - Ferdinand Foch at the Battle of the Marne |

If you undock in a Moa with Caldari Cruiser IV but then eject from it in space the ships resists drop down to their normal value (i.e. the ship resist bonuses go away) because the skill level granting the bonus is now effectively zero.
Same thing applies to drones; if a Moros pilot abandons a Warrior II with 250% damage and HP (assuming Gallente Dreadnought IV), the bonus goes away as soon as the drone is abandoned because the ship is the source of the bonus, not the drone.
Mind you this is only for fighters that are actually assigned to other ships (i.e. carrier loses control, other ship gets it). If you're telling your fighters to assist or guard another ship while under your control the bonus still applies. -------------------- "I am hard pressed on my right; my centre is giving way; situation excellent; I am attacking." - Ferdinand Foch at the Battle of the Marne |
