For a time, the game had a bug where the client seemed to run out of video memory (I was running multiple clients) and would fail to load the system background. This was great! I didn't realize how much eye strain your nebulas and bright white gaseous clouds were giving me until it was gone.
At the time I petitioned it be made a feature, with its own checkbox in the graphic menus. Now I ask again.
With many of these systems it's just too hard to see my ship controls. I can't see if my weapons are on. I can't see if I'm still running my shield booster or afterburner. I find myself constantly swiveling the screen so a dark part of space is behind those buttons. So now graphics become meaningless, because now I'm strictly looking at my ship interface and my overview -NOTHING ELSE! I find myself changing the direction of my ship and then immediately swiveling the camera back to the darkest part of space.
Once I realized I was playing the game this way, it was kind of sad. Makes me start thinking it's time to find a new game. I've played this game longer than any previous mmo. I've seen all the space backgrounds so many times times they all look the same -so why not just let me turn them off?

I second this, ever since i started playing the game it's been one of my biggest issues. The backgrounds are way too loud. One workaround for the not being able to see your onlined modules issue is to pop the game into widescreen mode, it puts the letterboxing behind your modules so at least the controls are against black.
A simple checkbox to disable backgrounds (or just disable gas clouds) would be perfect, I wouldn't object to seeing the distant stars.

I have the same problem and do the same thing (swivel the camera to the darkest part of space).
I've never understood why there are so many gas clouds in Eve. Space should be mostly be a pitch black canvas with stars, and the few nebula's and gas clouds should be limited to systems that have said characteristics.
For instance the Gas clouds of a "young system" could be located in a ring 1000 AU from the star, which would be a place one could travel to, a kind to Freelancer.

I remember when I hit a bug that removed the backgrounds for a few jumps and how I felt that Eve looked better without them, even if I wasn't considering the contrast issues.
The only time I've ever actually been impressed by them is the Eve Gate.
So I would also like the option to turn them off. But I'd like the Eve Gate to keep its background when I turn the rest off, simply because it is a rather important landmark. Though if it gets removed, that doesn't matter too much.

I am totally up for this.
I clearly remember the mission The Blockade (did it with Angels) and there was this, I don't know, some kind of bubble of bright, yellow-ish clouds. I always scrolled out to max distance in there just to see the modules and overview.
I'd suggest to have a dark space background (you may put some stars into it if you want) and then the optional stuff onto it via Graphics Settings page.
Not that I didn't like the nice graphics and all, but at some points it's just better to play with less ![Rolling Eyes](/images/icon_rolleyes.gif)
