Mining is a nice profession in theory but the application of it ingame is really boring. I propose that we remove belts from systems altogether and replace them with something that works like anomalies does today but spawned more frequently so they are available everywhere. Rats would spawn in these so belt ratting would pretty much be the same. This first change makes it less static and hunting for good belts becomes a semi profession for good miners.
The second part is to add something that makes mining more exciting, rare ores. These would be refined into the same minerals we have today but at greater values. These wouldnt have their own rocks but instead be found inside of the rocks we have today. There would be 2 ways to find these, either you just mine your belts like you do today and sometimes get lucky and get your rare ores from a bunch of rocks or you use a new deep survey scanner at one rock at a time to find this ore and mine that only. This also adds the opportunity to hunt the even better belts where you have a lot of these ores. In Highsec these would be rare and the further out you get the more you find. Maybe even super rare 0.0 and WH grav sites that are made purely of this.
So what does this add in total? New module (deep survey scanner) New mining crystal with increased "special ore" yield Fun mining Random mining chances New mini profession (searching anomaly belts) Reason to probe to 100% and check those gravimetric sites |

Another module and role it could add is a belt wide aoe deep scanner that only orcas and rorquals can use making them really good for finding those valuable belts. This scanner wouldnt tell you what rocks you can find these ores in but what is in the entire belt. |

I feel odd posting positively in a goon/TEST thread, but I can see this being a viable tool for most miners to learn how to mine "better."
I agree that there should be better ore in Grav sites. Forcing miners to scan their ore would decrease the bots, which is an ongoing battle. The mining ships should be able to fit a probe launcher along with their strip lasers.
I do think that some of the "special" ore found in Grav sites should be moon goo. This should include Tech...
+1
BTW, this has been suggested before, but the twist of special ore within the belts makes this even more of an ideal solution for miners to gain some excitement.

Yea moon goo could definitively be a good ingredient in this but it seems like ccp have other plans for those. What i want with this is to make mining less static, no more afk mining if you want to max your isk/hour but and actual isk per effort.
Btw thanks Lonkz for reviving my month old thread ^^ |

Definite +1, make the miners work for their ore. And make it less of a boring fest. Speaking as a miner myself...I don't afk mine. I do get bored with mine drop ore. Rinse and repeat. Also I liked the other idea someone had of actively running the mining lasers on ore seams in the asteroid along with making differences visual rather then by name.

Better gravimetric sites and more indeed..
Make current belt mining passive. HUGE roids 72+ manhours in HULK. w Alloy CORE when roid depletes.
Consider making a math engine that weighs outer crust to inner core. IF outer CRUST is below inner core, random warp the roid to nearest gravimetric site.
Also more in the other thread.. and a lot of good talk.. CSM member keeping an eye on that one to..

I don't like the huge rock concept, it makes it a grind again. I want it to be a dynamic and active job that you constantly need to be changing to get the max profit but otherwise you have some good points. |

Some like the afk mining. I think we should try getting the best of both worlds.
In post I mentioned how this all ties directly into all other aspects of the game, and many old feature discussions..
The TRINARY solution. UI and function integration of overview, scanner, and data storage.
So they all become drag and drop enabled and selecting say to items in hangar and dragging to scanner they would scan for those in space. same adding the to the overview.
Saving these presets as scripts either into your cargo hold, sending the script via email, or in chat channel hyper link.
Would also make sense adding more depth to specific scanning of space and even of ships. SO you could have scripts to scan for specific items either in cargo, or installed. If the item was not in the script you would only get intel on the lower tier version in your scanner. Also this would make it possible to limit scanner script number of items, and thus shift specificity of scanning into player to player mechanics.
Might also help make ganking and pirating more cerebral a whole RANGE of options..

Sure afk mining should still be a viable option but it should never be as profitable as active mining, that is what destroys the fun in mining today. |

+1 like idea how about moving comet (100m/s) that you can mining that can spawn in a system (small comet in High, medium in low and big one in 0.0) and there were various types of them: Ice comet, Mercoxit comet and Mineral comet or maybe Drone Alloy Comet And if you mine mineral comet or Drone Alloy Comet , you will get every cycle another mineral or Alloy |

Mining Comets is really an interesting idea.. Especially if it was considered in unison with other mining ideas, as the ones mentioned in this and other threads..
Personally I would go back to some aspect of the alloy idea.. The compositions of comets should in some way make it worth scanning them down, and here comes the novel aspect. You should make different comets have different speeds so you sort of mined the while chasing them. So you would need to use ships that could be "speed tanked" to keep it in range.
Maybe this could be made to look and feel a bit like a very slow version of warping.? So the instance was moving. This could also make it semi possible to project or calculate its orbit in the solar system and know where to scan for it again, after logging out. Or sharing the scan location with friends..

Yes to feedback!
CCP stated in the latest fanfest plans to make mining much more involved. Rocks needing to be scanned for their contents, with rarer stuff hidden about. Also moving moon minerals to belts as well so they have to be mined.
Second thing, this is the escalation window. It shows asteroids around a planet. Could that be hinting?
Lastly, better industrial ships. T3 anyone? |

For deep mining trying to get at the rare minerals it could work similar to how PI works with a mix of scanning. Using the scanner on an asteroid would start to show high and low concentrations (based on skills and modules of course) of ore in the asteroid in a 3d manner similar to scanning with probes and you could manually aim your already targeted mining laser at it to mine more of the rare ore.
This would allow for expansion of mining lasers as well by having lasers that can mine deeper or have a wider laser to cover more of the area. This would also make it more obvious to players when an asteroid is about to run out of minerals.
Or ignore me and +1 to your idea anyways because it's good. |
