Just a very quick thought while I am inbetween jobs at work here....
Can real life $$$ be used to pay for skills to level up. I ask as i have been away for a while and I want to play with some buddies but am not interested in waiting for days or months of skills to train up so I can fly with them. Was wondering if you can pay cash for CCP to train a skill in osecs. IE $10 per skill level to be raised to circumvent having to wait for it to be raised.
Cheers

No, you can't. And please, don't ever mention it again *looks over his shoulder*.
You can however buy another character with isk that you made by selling GTC's.

Edited by: Pan Dora on 05/09/2008 02:03:00 Edited by: Pan Dora on 05/09/2008 02:00:47 If you want to fly with your buddies go fly with then, you dont need much game skill to do it (probably a few hour to all the essencial). However some real life social skill help a lot and looking how fast you 'ragequit' I bet you dont have an impressive skill level in this area.
My posts DOES reflect the view of my corp and ally... ..or a mistake they did when let me post. |

There is no possible way to "catch up" to other players who have come before you and have more skill points than you, it's just a fact of life in the EVE universe. So if keeping up with the Joneses is important to you, then you've come to the wrong game.
But the bigger point here is that this game isn't like a typical MMO where time away leaves you unable to group with your friends who have outleveled you. There are no levels, you will always be able to fly with your friends anytime you want. You may not shoot as powerfully or mine as fast, or fly the same ships they are flying, but there's nothing stopping you from joining them and having a good time.
You hear it said often in other MMOs: "it's not a race". It's even more true in EVE. . . Vex & Kesha Cachet . She's the Brains - I am pure DPS. . Men do not stop playing because they grow old, they grow old because they stop playing - Oliver Wendell Holmes |

With a good specialized training plan you can "catch up" by not "wasting" time on skills you will rarely use. However don't go for the 1 month training to a battleship schemes, because you will regret that.

My gaydar is not very strong but I distinctly feel that I'm picking up a signal... Might that be a troll in the vicinity?

no you cannot pay to get your skills up , you can buy a character with better skills - though this will not help you just get out there and fly with them - train as you go - -- BIG Lottery, BIG Deal, InEve

If you do not feel that you can play a game where you have to work your character up from scratch, you should really look for another genre than RPG's. first person shooters would be a much better choice if you just want a ready made character to play with. It's kind of silly to pick a game type that contains aspects you loathe so much you are willing to pay to bypass them. Just don't play those games then and save yourself money AND aggravation!

This is true. I suppose the difference with Eve is that the advancement is actual-time-based, so there is no chance of catching up, even if you play 24/7. This did put me off Eve for a while. But I gave in, as it is such a great game. Wish I had stuck with it last year now. I wouldn't be as far behind if I had

Then just head to a store somewhere to buy the GTC for real dollars, and you have your wish :) Just not necessarily the character portrait you wanted. But that can be changed too.

On the plus side, however, unlike with other MMORPG's where you MUST level up before you will even be considered for playing along with the veterans, in EVE you can join the "end game" and play right alongside the big boys with just a few hours of skilltraining. All you lack compared to the big boys is self sufficiency (which for people who want to play with friends should NEVER be a consideration, you got those friends to rely on after all) and flexibility(you will be stuck to fulfilling only a single role for a while). It's the only MMORPG where a newbie with friends(or an alt) can participate meaningfully in the endgame within a day after creation of the character. Not even WoW can make that claim!
Yes, you will never catch up with veteran players, but in all honesty, you never do that in other MMORPG's either unless there is an artificial level cap imposed. The big boys got that way by playing with as much dedication as you could possibly put in trying to catch up so the only way you will catch up is if they can not progress at all in any way. Fortunately, in EVE since only a limited number of skills can apply to a specific ship in a specific situation(mining and refining skills are worthless when you are probing down vessels in a CovOps ship), you don't NEED to catch up and still have a worthwhile game to enjoy. All it takes is specialization and teamwork. Neither of which should pose a problem to someone who specifically likes playing cooperative multiplayer games.
