Say I am under attack by a pirate and I want to request backup from my corporation. What is the easiest way (if any) to link the pirates name and ship type to the corp chat window (without breaking up the chat into separate windows)?

If you are under attack then you are unlikely to have time to do this, but since you asked:
To link anything, be it character, ship or whatever, type out its name (or part of its name), select the text, right-click, and choose the proper option under auto-link.

Ok, so I guess there is no more "convenient" way to report hostiles.
Would have been nice to have a Generate Link option, similar to the one you get from dragging a character portrait to chat, from the Overview itself - or any other information tab for that matter.

Check out the fleet broadcasts and see if any of those might help.

Surprised noone has mentioned this before:
Drag the persons portrait from the localchat into the chat where you wish to link them. When you release the mousebutton, you will be given a choice. Choose "SHow Info" and the name will be autolinked.
Balance is important, but you will always adapt to changing circumstances and you don't whine about stuff you can't change. |

I have now separated the local window from the rest of the chat windows so I can easily drag and link character info, but I am curious to know if this is possible without separating the chat windows? |

You had local in the group? o.0
ALWAYS have local open and seperate, ESPECIALLY when in lowsec and 0.0. It allows you to quickly see who is in the system and when people enter/leave. --- Sig Starts Here --- Lord Haur - Imperial Academy Logistical Support

Just repeating what the last poster said, because it's SO worth repeating...
ALWAYS have local open in a different window when in lowsec or 0.0. If I had been told of this rule, instead of learning it the hard way, I might have been the owner of one extra Nighthawk and one extra Drake... |

Really, if you're in a corp without voice comms, then your corp isn't doing the right thing by it's members. Nobody's mentioned voice comms yet.
The best way to communicate this is on voice comms with (as suggested above) a drag and drop of the character name from local to whatever channel you want to use. That way if you mispronounce, or just can't pronounce the name, they know who you're talking about.
Always keep local open in it's own window, put fleet, corp, alliance chats into a combined window and agree with your corp/alliance/fleet mates which is the primary channel (i.e the one you keep open most of the time).
I'd suggest being in a fleet always, that way your buddies can select you and warp to you, without you having to go "I'm at moon three, no moon four belt seven, no hang on, it's moon seven, belt four......oh !@#$ don't bother, I'm in a pod".
If you're under attack from a single pirate, then the name isn't that important.....as they warp up to you, they're going to know who's shooting you.......I would prefer to know what type of ship, rather than the name of the pilot, so I can prepare my EWAR assets to jam/damp/track/point the target as required.
