Originally by: Dragonaire One of the reason is lower server loading with less traffic between the servers and hosts which also makes me wonder why they want to change it other than improve the code and what we all seem to want which is some clean up of the output and maybe a dtd which would help them and us.
I'd say that DTD could be much more helpful than anything else. Especially with the problem described above - difference between expected and implemented number formats and such. -- Thanks CCP for cu |

Well, looks like the motive is explained: "We want to continue this, so that when we build our own applications, we do it on top of the EVE API." - Oveur's latest devblog.
Web Services work great with ASP, don't they?
So, uh, yeah. Looks like we won't be getting our XML in the future unless CCP decide to put their playerbase first rather than migrating the whole API just so their internal development doesn't have to parse XML? That'd be my guess. -- Ix Forres EVE Application Developer ISKsense | RLS-EVE | EVE Metrics (NEW) |

We have been looking at Web Services for a number of reasons.
1) It reduces parsing. 2) There are a number of industry tools available to enable better caching of results. 3) We are doing more websites ourselves and if we are using the same system then the players get access to the same API (within reason, we would not expose account/billing API's etc) 4) We have looked at redoing the Restful XMl as a wrapper on top of the Web Service. So that it is consolidated at our end but you could still use the XML if you wanted.
Elerhino and I are holding a round table at Fanfest and will be talking with people about this and other ideas we have.

Whee, answers! Thanks Lingorm.
I'd love to see the RESTful XML maintained, even as a wrapper provided by CCP to the web service option. I think web services are a usable alternative but I would hate to see this turn into the primary option. RESTful XML is by far the most interoperable and used tool out there for public web APIs, and with good reasons; it'd be great to see CCP continue to support and maintain the XML interface going forward, as well as improve it in some of the ways suggested in this thread.
Any chance someone could record the discussion at the roundtable? I'd love to be at FF but can't afford to, both financially and time-wise.

Could make web services a wrapper for XML and get the same thing done without take the same chances of break all the existing third party stuff that already using API -- Finds camping stations from the inside much easier. Been known to write some PHP code for API from time to time too. |

No you can't. Web Services contain lots of data an metadata that is not available in the current XML form. You cannot just generate the metadata out of nowhere.
The other way around might work: You can strip them of that metadata to produce the XML files.

I wouldn't dare using IIS in any production enviornment anyway, but it seams the admins of CCP don't have any security concerns, so...
Ah, c'mon. This is a unprofessional statement.
When was the last time a security leak was found in IIS? Thoughtlessly repeating stereotypes that were true some 10-15 years ago (NT4 + IIS), but have long changed meanwhile don't do your credibility any good.
Here's one, dated 2008-03-25: http://www.securityfocus.com/bid/27101
NOW who looks unprofessional?
