I've read about how people have ran extremely detailed charts, comparison analysis, number cruched to hell & back to find out the best/efficient combination of race, bloodline, ancestry etc....
When it all comes down to it, how many people still choose the character stricly for the way they look rather than the starting point and starting skills?

Out of my own personal (limited) experience, I'd venture a guesstimation of "newbies going mostly for the looks/backstory, most vets going just for the attributes/skills".
Caldari has it all... the looks (all except Achura males), backstory (militaristic high-tech capitalists ftw, first ones to have capsule tech, most tech-advanced military, etc) and attributes (as if Civire wasn't already one of the best, Achura are EVEN BETTER). No wonder a vast majority of characters are Caldari.
Gallente has the worst possible attributes for all-rounders, but used to have the best research/manufacture ones (Intaki reborn), which has been sadly superceeded by Achura Inventor. The backstory of Gallente is, I believe, the second most attractive on a general scale, but with Caldari being so much more enticing, it's not that good. Still, if nothing else, then "enemy of Caldari" is a good backstory to pick based on the fact most pilots ARE Caldari
Vherokior females look hottish, and the attributes are ok for various not directly combat related tasks, so Minmatar still holds some interest. Brutor has some decent combat attributes, but it's been surpassed by both Achura and Khanid lately. Speaking of Khanid, it's pretty much on par with (actually, better than) Achura when talking about pure (and LONG-TERM) combat training. Amarr and Minmatar have little to offer story-wise that's "cooler" than Caldari-vs-Gallente (religious zealots vs former slaves, meh), and other than the former brutor and current khanid attribute picks, they hold little interest. Which also shows in the fact so little numbers of pilots are either one or the other... especially Amarr (face it, MOST EVE players are either agnostic or atheist, and the idea of a religion-based society is downright repulsive).

Same as some others - backstory. I don't like religion, I'm not french, and I'm not a slave... only leaves one choice :) As for subclasses, picked them based on what I would actually pick if it were me.
Odd though, I'm not a roleplayer at all. I also had no idea what the choices meant for skillpoints. That's one thing I wished EVE had with it (not sure about the current new player experience) when I started off - more info about how your choices affect your character within the game. I picked a higher charisma than most "fighters" these days would go for (check all the Achuras with their abysmal charisma) because I was thinking that it would affect how I would interact with other players, NPCs, etc... I figured like most D&D games where low charisma means people don't want to gang up with you, you don't get access to the better NPCs or missions, etc...
Still happy with how my character has turned out though (aka, I wouldn't toss the SP away... to much money spent on it!).

Edited by: Mea Lustra on 07/09/2008 05:44:38 I started a short while ago, went with Gallente for drones and thought up a nice name that worked well with the Gallente background. While they're very good and my skills were nicely focussed I got bored with the "easy ride" and after seeing some corp members fly Amarr ships I decided to switch.
Instead of just training up the skills for from my first character (which has maxed out tanking skills and 1.5 mil in drones) I decided to reinvent myself as Amarr, with looks, proper name and all that. And now my attributes are also better because I now know what I'm doing (a bit).
Looks and "overall theme" all the way.

when i rolled my first character i rolled it for its attributes and made it be of the same race as my friend's character so that we could play together
now I try to combine all three: backstory, attributes, and looks Caldari backstory never resonated with me, ex-slave/freedom fighter story was also meh, so I ended up rolling mostly Gallente and Amarr characters and rarely Caldari and Minmatar

I am a 'atheist' and this Amarr religious thing is the thing that convinced me into playing something in a game because I'm not that in real life. In fact I even took the religious reclaimer bloodline to empathize this. So i have 4 base perception and aspiring to be a combat pilot this brings a world of hurt onto myself. Yet it does have a form of attraction to it for me playing this character. Even if i would find it horrible to live in such a place in real life. To me thats kinda the purpose of playing any game, if people could have done those things out there they wouldn't be sitting behind their computers doing it.

My "in head RP" style of my character is very minmatar as i consider myself to be a wandering nomad/drifter who does anything for cash (..but i wont do THAT) so rusty ships made out of girders suit me quite well.

I went with the background for starters as I am a liberal at heart. I spent ages at the start looking at what the attributes did and what skills they were good for, I had already decided that the industry type of character was for me so geared it for that.

When I was creating my character, I asked my friend what the differences were.
Amarr: Lots of armor, lasers Gallente: Lots of drones Minmatar: Fast ships, conventional weaponry Caldari: Lots of shields and missiles Overall: Anyone can do anything, given time to train.
I told myself, "If I'm going to play a space game... I want the frickin' lasers! If I want something else I'll just train for it."
The backstory was just a bonus.

I was really happy with my avatar. Especially considering the massive number of Amarrians with the cowl tucked low over their eyes (which I almost did myself).
You have a few copied styles. The big, blonde Caldari, the Amarrian with the hood, the Khanid with the uber-dark face mask, the Brutor with the glasses, the pasty-white Seibestor, the minnie asian with the face tattoos, and the gallente ugly dude.
Oh, lets' not forget the cute Caldari chick with the red background.

I knew only two things about EVE when I made my first character in '04 - jack and squat. Armed with this (lack of) knowledge, I read the info on the character creation screens and decided I liked the story for the Federation. The Intaki information was similarly appealing, so that's what I made.
I had no idea how character attributes affected anything. If I cared much, I'd make an Achura (like everyone else). As it stands, I ended up killing that original character after several years, and when I came back to make another, my fascination with the Intaki compelled me to make another one.
For those folks who want looks and attributes, save yourself some time and simply make a female Achura. Don't even bother looking into the backstory. CCP has an obvious preference for the Caldari, which is why there's such a disproportionate number of players who flock to the State; it's just better from a min/max perspective.

I remember that I looked at Gallente, and liked their style, but didn't choose them for one simple reason: they included the word 'French' as their heritage. Beh, killed it for me. And they sounded way too stuck up and snotty, reminding me of why I dislike the French in the first place.
Then I looked at Caldari, and I liked what I saw. Seemed a bit too oriental, with 'life to the corporation' and all, but they looked good. But I looked up their ships, and I hated the way they looked. Still hate them ... ugliest things in space. Being the kind of vain person that I am, aesthetics are a big deal.
Then I looked into Minmatar, and the whole 'former slave' bit through me off, hard. I couldn't relate to the pasty-faced white guy, and though the glasses were cool, the brutor specs were awful. And I saw that the ships looked like taped up junk.
Ahh, the Amarr. I had to risk being what every self-respecting white American male fears ... a slave owner. But I figured I'd roleplay being anti-slavery. Cool. And being a religious fanatic was something I could deal with, considering that I'm against religions as a whole, and the Amarr seemed pretty close to Islam in their mentality and philsophy.
And then I saw their ships, and I thought 'this is the sh*t.'
Took me two hours to make a toon worth a crap, though. Man, the Amarr face is ugly as hell
