Dude, don't forget all the bs in the Corps. The horrible SNCO's who do nothing but run your life poorly. The crappy non-rates who are constantly getting you in trouble for their complete ignorance and stupidity.
You can't quit without going to jail. If you ever have a REALLY stupid boss, you can't tell them so without going to jail. Underage drinking, barracks wh*res, PMO, SNCO's, dumb*ss butter bars, chow halls, morning PT, Sunday haircuts, "Oohrah, Corporal!" ...
I loved the Marine Corps, but it's an exercise in stupidity. There's good and bad with everything, but no amount of nostalgia should make you forget the utter bullsh*t you have to deal with day in and day out.

Hmmm ...
36 years and nothings changed ... well ... maybe the uniforms and such ...
Urrrrrrah! Get Some! Kill! Kill! Kill!
There is one and only one good reason for going into the military.
That reason is that you want to serve your country.
Do it for that reason and you will have no regrets.
Do it for any other reason and "You'lllll Beeeeeee Sorrrryyyyyyy!!!"

Me and a buddy had a photo shoot on the flightline a few years ago. We were both lances, nothing special, perfecting the art of doing nothing without getting caught.
We're standing around, and a couple of brass tacks drift over to us. We start chatting it up, and it was hilarious, cause they were doing the exact same thing we were ... feeling bored, up to no good, but trying to avoid the watchful eye of 'superiors.'
Then you pick up corporal, and you realize that those lieutenants are nothing more than pfc's, with all the laziness and stupidity that entails.

If you are talking about realizing how many people stand around and do "nothing" while they are supposed to be doing "something". Especially in the sense of a superior, then I get it. If not then I guess I am a civilian without a clue about what you all speak of.
That being said, I was going to join the Marines out of high school, but I was medically disqualified do to medical history. I can say that was one of the best/worst things that could have happened.

As a future butter bar(AF, not Corps, but a butterbar is a butterbar...), I would have to agree with you, we are shit stupid. Though you do have the occasional prior-E that isn't a moron.
But 0-3 gets just a little more respect than E-3.
Even 1st Lt aren't usually that bad though. Well, except for the whole bureaucracy crap that all the military, especially NCO and Officers have to deal with...

I recognize 2 types of prior e: one has had the crappy bosses and jobs and will not treat e's that way while wearing the o, the other feels like it is now his turn to treat the e's that way since he earned the o.

There's something about signing up and going through boot that makes you dumb as a rock. I don't know what it is. Take a perfectly balanced and self-sustaining 30 year old, and going through boot they are an idiot, and usually remain so until they pick up corporal.
Same for officers. Smart, capable men going in, but it takes a couple years for them to get their common sense back for some odd reason.

No, just observation. Something about having your head shaved just leaks out all the good braincells, I think. Maybe it's the brainwashing and all the 'ooh rahs' and 'kills'. But universally, Pfc's, lance corporals and lieutenants are idiots.
And we won't get into the mentality of those individuals who have a tendency to stay in for more than eight years ...

In all my years, only those who screwed up or had crap for command go stuck doing nothing.
The rest of us were doing something for nothing, or nothing for something.

Personally, I intend on treating the enlisted exactly how my current cadre here treat me... as people. Do what your told and not *****, you get treated well. Don't do what your told and/or ***** about it, and you start getting "talked" to. The way it should be in any job, military or civilian.
Unfortunately, my cadre entire cadre is getting rotated out at the end of the academic year. Though this really sucks for the POC since the new Colonel will have about 6 months to get to know them before writing their rating...
