Just playing around with these and its hard to see many advantages of the mwd over the afterburner. With both of them I get just over 1000 m/s with my skills and the rate of acceleration is about the same.
Any thoughts?

You're doing something wrong. An equally forceful AB or MWD will NEVER reach the same speed.
Please give us more info.

I have- afterburner iv 10% bonus duration acc control 1 5% bonus to both
perhaps when acc control is trained it makes a large diff when the percentages add up.
whats max speed of a mwd?
(i also have an overdrive injector 2)

You might want to check the size of the MWD you are using on the ship, if say you have a cruiser you should be using a 10MN MicroWarp Drive. ---

I'm gonna go with what Jakbek (apologies for misspellings) said.
Nothing you listed matters. An MWD has roughly 5x the boost an AB does for the same class. Therefore you are not fitting the same class of mod. Note the number of 0s after the 1. Unless they have the same number of 0s, and this may be none, they aren't the same class mod.

Are you sure you've got a MWD, and not a named afterburner.
To be sure, just choose a 1MN afterburner and a 1MN MWD (don't get confused with catalyzed cold-gas arcjet thrusters, mono-propellant hydrazine boosters and the like, some of which are AB and some are MWDs - it takes some experience to know what's what). ______________________ Isn't it time you learned to fight back? 1 MN afterburner and 1 MN microwarpdrive - frigates 10 MN - cruisers, industrials 100 MN - battleships
If you install a smaller MWD than the ship class, it will take fewer resources, you'll suffer the full penalties to capacitor, and it will feel like it isn't doing much.
If you install a larger AB than the ship class, it will use up a lot of the powergrid and CPU so you can't install much of a tank or gunnery, but it will feel like a MWD.

You've mixed classes and types of MWDs and ABs.
First off, make sure you are using the EXACT SAME class and type of MWD/AB for your comparison.
1MN and it's named (Col-Gas 1, Monopropellant Hydrazine, etc) are for FRIGATES.
10mn (and it's named, Y-T8) are for CRUISERS.
100mn (and it's named, Lif) are for BATTLESHIPS.
Now, within each class, look at the info sheets.
AB give between 110% and 125% to velocity for their proper class.
MWD gives 500% to velocity, take away 25$ cap, and extend your sig radius by 500%.
WHAT THAT MEANS: Increases your speed 5x, you become 5x easier to hit (duue to sig radius increase - your frigate just became a BC in terms of how big a target you are - this is made up for somewhat by the speed vs. tracking issue), and you've lost 25% of your maximum cap, thus making it a LOT harder to fit modules.
Plus, you can't use a MWD on a lot of missions, OR in deadspace complexes - they don't work in deadspaces.

I've put a 100mn afterburner on a Myrmiddon (BS class AB on BC class ship). It does _not_ feel like a mwd. Takes forever to accellerate to top speed, something like a full minute. And it takes all kinds of cap and kills align time. It was kind of cool to do, but ended up more trouble than it was worth.
