When I salvage and loot my rats, there are always some big, cheap stuff that i leave behind. Some of these things are:
*Metal Scraps *Cap boosters *Large generic ammo
What other things do you leave when you find it? Keeping just the primo stuff lets me mission/salvage longer without having to run back and forth to a station.

You would be surprised how quickly those items can add up. I personally take the cheap stuff back and refine it. Leaving it in space, unless you do not have the cargo room to spare, is like throwing away ISKY. But that is a matter of personal preference for each pilot.

I hate throwing away any amount of money, but that might be more of a product of my limited newbie fund raising ability.
For small missions like I usually run solo, I bookmark and come back with my Catalyst fitted with Expanded Cargo T2s in all the lows. It's usually enough.
For big missions (when I follow friends into level 4s or complexes) I bring along my Exequror again loaded with T2 Expanded Cargo in all the lows. I rarely fill up and I can assist him with 4 T2 Hammerheads, so I can feel a little useful as well.
That being said... The first thing to get dumped is the Scrap Metal. It refines into so little.

I'll pick up anything that's not nailed down.
The Metal Scraps are a pita, but even those get dumped at the nearest station in system. |

One other option is jet-canning all that stuff and dragging it behind you with a tractor beam, once you are done bookmark the can and come back with a hauler. Not ideal for every situation but better than just leaving it to rot, as mentioned already the stuff adds up quick and can be refined into minerals that sell for decent isk.

This is true and I admit I like to clean up properly after myself but at some point I remember the mantra..
isk per hour
A lot of the time my game time is limited and thus (if missioning) I should use the time to maximum profit.

I guess I'm thinking about plex running. Oftentimes you are in a hard to get to spot and have filled up your cargo hold. It makes sense to throw some stuff overboard so you can get the really valuable loot. For instance, in Skeleton comet, Drug Junkies give off Stolen Goods, which take up a huge amount of space and cannot be sold on the market. Get rid these things. Or when you've got 3 BS wrecks to loot and salvage and only 10m3 left, you'll chuck the cap boosters in favor of the named large armor repper. Its not leaving isk on the floor. Its maximizing isk/load.

When salvaging, avoid "mission generic" wrecks. They are meant for looting, and often have good stuff. When salvaged, they give off metal scraps. Notice that you never get metal scraps from pirate faction wrecks (angel, gurista, etc).
I also use the tractorbeam trick. Just haul your own "suitcase" behind you.

Might be worth it for you to calculate and write down the profit/m3 number for whatever drops most commonly.
For example, smartbombs, even the standard ones, sell for a lot and take very little space, so it's worth looting all of them. At the other end of the spectrum, standard armor repairer modules sell for what seems like a lot, but take up a huge amount of space, so it's not worth bothering.
The cost/m3 value for smartbombs is somewhere in the 1000 isk/m3 range, whereas for armor repairers is something like 0.6. Almost any module is more worth it than armor repairers, heh.

As others have said - you're throwing away money.
TBH, I make my own ammo with the minerals from "worthless" loot drops. You'd be suporised at how much of some of the better ores are in things like armor reppers, cap booster charges, etc.
Personally, I have a personal standard as to what is "decent" loot, and what is "worthless".
If there's no buy orders above 15K for it, it gets reprocessed, and made into ammo/missiles. Works like a champ, and occasionally get even more profit by selling off excess minerals in job lots (kinda nice to put up a 2M sell order on Pyerite tihout EVER going near a 'roid :)
To some people it's not worth their time, as they have enough iskies coming in from elsewhere to support themselves. Until that time - it helps to get every little bit o' cash you can.

I take everything, but metal scraps and large ammo are usually the first things to get jetted if the cargohold fills up. I mean I've got 1,057 m3 on my salvage ship but it still isn't enough sometimes.

Just FYI:
1 Metal Scrap refines into 3 Tritanium.

True but if you have space to spare you may as well take it and reprocess it along with everything else.

This is what I do if it won't all fit in the catalyst. Gather it all up into one pile anyway, then depending on the amount of stuff left over, make a second catalyst trip or swap out for the hauler.

I usually just leave it. Undocking, warping back to the location, taking the can, warping to station, docking, moving the loot to station, waiting the 30s to switch ships, and undocking again in combat ship = could take 3-5 minutes all in all. And in 5 minutes I could possibly finish another mission, esp. if it's a short one, for 100k reward and 50k bonus.
So I'm not gonna go back and get the truly crappy crap. I grab the decent stuff and leave the rest, move on to the next mission, save some time.

Metal scraps, how I hate thee. I use the tractor beam method too, and I may come back to pick up cap charges, but scraps are just filler and stay nicely behind if I just have to fly back for them.
Also, I wish there was a sort by size option to quickly see which modules are hogging all the cargo space.

I take everything.
If I run out of room I dump what won't fit in a can and come back for it in an industrial if it's going to take more than one more trip in my destroyer.
As long as I'm there salvaging I might as well take everything.

I pick all loot I can....even if I have to fly 4-5-6-7 times back to station. Once a week I contract all to my other account who has good refiningskill and take back all minerals who come out the refine to build new things. DON'T worry be HAPPY!!!!! |

If you do this and you activate a tractor beam on the jetted cargo container you have a 27,500m3 portable cargo container. When you are flying around and your carog hold fill just shift select everything and drop in the tractored can and your hold is empty once again. This makes it easy to make just one trip back to the can with a hauler. Just make sure you remember to BM the cargo container so you do not have to fly halfway across a room to get to it in a hauler, or to make sure that you have a BM in the area period.

Tractoring a can works fine for a mission, but not so good for a public complex where you may be several acceleration gates in. Might as well put a big label "Steal me" on the can. (I've done that, by the way.) Hope whoever finds it enjoys their haul of metal scraps, lead charges, and civilian shield boosters.
