In game experience may vary is on the cover of every game sold in the US, and most other games understand that they can't control the occasional swear or rant, and that people occasionally need to blow off steam. At the end of the day, no one ever really takes it personally unless they are socially mal-adjusted. Be completely honest. How many of you have ever called someone a *got [bundle of sticks/person of the homosexual persuasion/or slang for just being a jerk with no connotation at all]? I am willing to bet it's 99% of you. I bet none of you really meant it. I bet it was just the fastest thing you could think of, when you wanted to make apparent to a person that they were a jerk. Maybe you meant no harm by it at all. Maybe you were petitioned for calling someone in your own corp a got in jest, and banned for a week. I know I was. As of right now, the petition system is completely and totally broken regarding player abuse. The Mods have absolutely no discretion, and at the risk of someone being butt-hurt, they blindly ban anyone without A) warning them B)looking at the context C) looking at the entire conversation. It's entirely subject to who submits the petition first. of course, if this person is not in your corp, it's going to be the most unfavorable depiction they can think of. I, myself, have done the exact same thing at the urging of ex-CEOs as a form of protest. Enough is enough. I just got banned for a week. I have no clue what for, because CCP won't tell me. All I see is a message when I try to log on: User GIJoeDirtbag is banned Last login: 2008.09.06 15:40 Number of visits: 1291 Reason: Repeated warnings or ingame violations about offensive language. Until: 2008.09.15 So I file a petition, asking what for, and it won't be answered for a whole week because CCP is overloaded with petitions. I WONDER WHY THIS IS. Maybe it has to do with the fact that they entertain every single petition that has to do with anything that is even slightly off color. I've worked 36 hours in the last 3 days. I get home, and I just want to play a game with my friends. If someone calls me a got, I don't care. I'm 25. I'm a man. I don't take it personally because ultimately, the person on the other end of the line doesn't know me, and it's a default response for anything said on the internet. I don't know what it was that I said on my main account, GIJoeDirtbag. I do know that I had the lyrics for "Springtime for **" in my bio to protest another ban that I got. Who here hasn't seen "The Producers" and laughed? I got banned for a week for saying "Don't be stupid be a smarty, come and join the party" in local. The people who petitioned me said I was a propagandist. After informing CCP that it was a line from the most profitable play in Broadway history, they laughed and banned me anyway. For those of you not familiar, here is the link that I even had in my Bio: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0395251/ http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063462/ It is a Broadway play written by a Jewish comedian, Mel Brooks, satirizing the **s and Broadway, not propaganda. CCP operates under a "When in doubt, ban them all" mentality. Considering that they're dealing with pay-for play accounts, this is inexcusable. Goonswarm was encouraged to counter-petition for anything remotely offensive in local in response to hundreds of gags and bans received on our own part. All PVPers in 0.0 use it as a strategy. They're not offended, they act offended to get people banned for laughs. This ignorance is unforgivable, and it costs you game time. Therefore, it costs you money. If you agree, and you're tired of the use of petitions as a form of harassment, let CCP know right here. Please keep it respectful, and don't bring corp/alliance rivalries into this. This is nothing short of censorship on a medium designed to encourage free speech, so speak up.

You can get away with a lot more as far as character names, cursing, trash talking, and general a$$hattery in Eve than in most other MMOs I've played. The short and sweet answer is that these are all privately owned games. The Bill of Rights/Constitution/Her Majesty's Decree/etc all do not apply here. The EULA is the alpha and omega where an MMO is concerned. If they don't want you to curse or swear, then don't play the game or be prepared to suffer the consequences. Just like you don't pvp with a ship you can't afford to lose, don't swear on an account you can't afford to lose. As a man of 25, that should not be a difficult task to accomplish. I think what you need to understand is that as a member of Goonswarm, like any large successful corp/guild/team/outfit, you are going to have haters, jealous players, rivals, and opponents that would like nothing more in life than to see you fall. The name of your char, your language in local, behavior on the boards, are all ways that they can easily target you using the rules of the EULA. Their names will never show up in a killmail or no a killboard, but they've just as effectively removed you from the fight as any other in-game tactic or manuever. Is it a shameful tactic to employ? That's your call. But it's certainly within the rules, and it's certainly effective. Remember, you don't have any rights in this game other than what CCP allows you to have. Petitions are all well and good, but the only thing that's likely to catch their attention is impact on their bottom line. Posted - 2008.09.08 17:32:00 - [56] My advice, if CCP is denying the service to you (ie: ban) and won't explain it, then they've violated their merchant agreement with your credit card issuer. This is assuming you pay with a credit card. In that case, you are entitled to reverse the last charge (called a "chargeback") which will put the onus on CCP to explain to your bank why they won't provide the service you paid for. Giving out a ban, then not responding to a petition on it in a reasonable amount of time (and not responding before the ban expires is CLEARLY not going to meet any definition of "reasonable") would unquestionably meet your bank's criteria for a chargeback. I did this with SOE when they released the NGE, and got a 6 month prepay refunded since it was obvious that SOE wasn't providing the service I'd prepaid for. This is why it's best to pay with a major credit/debit card, because it gives you rights that EULA's can't take away, as CCP has to agree to abide by those rights in order to be able to accept credit cards.

However, people need to understand the difference between talking jive with your fiends/corp mates and making intentionally offensive comments. CCP is weak that way and have no balls to ban them all, so they have to do it one by one.
