Something about goons ganking a 22 dual box account miner who then sent them an email describing how depressed/suicidal he was from a divorce, etc., and then Mittani publicly encouraging people at the fanfest to Eve-mail the guy to encourage him to kill himself.

YMMV as to Mittani's "guilt." IMO, it's one of those stupid, distasteful comments that we all make at some time or another, that should be apologized for with an optional mild censuring as punishment and then dropped. However, the whole thing has taken a life of it's own, and it's probably too late for a simple apology.

We do all make stupid and possibly even dangerous comments from time to time. However, most of us don't make a career out of it or consider the making of such comments to be one of their reasons for existing. If this was a one off, then you might have a point. As it is, it is simply the most public example of a long line of similar sentiments. It is not a deviation from his normal character but, rather, indicative of his normal character. A simple apology generally suffices when such comments are 'accidental', as it were, and not intrinsic but it's only possible to apologise if it is not immediately clear that the apology would be completely meaningless.
