Drake
The background is just a placeholder.
I can't decide what I want to make it do, so I am posting here for some ideas .
I also tossed this together, Movie just to test animations. Nothing fancy.

Make it spin around one axis for a couple of seconds then fly in "T3h L33t" in big white Arial from the left. Pure win and you can thank me later.

Clever.
In the end I am going to create a video of two interceptors having a dogfight through an asteroid belt, I have been experimenting with missiles and lasers and I think I have them about where I want them.
Before I do that though, I am going to make a drake or raven firing missiles and then a megathron firing lasers for final tests before starting on the dogfight.

Yeh explosions are difficult thats what I'm working on at the moment.
Although I've switched emphasis to character animation for Tairos.
Hyperion /start sig I love old characters that post 'I've beeen playing the game four years' when I know their account has been sold on. /end sig |

you'd probably need to remodel slightly so that the individual components are separate 3dsmax objects that you can pull apart explosion-in-a-vacuum style
or you can go hollywood with it and just have a big lensflare with a circle expanding. - -

After that you can postpro some lensflare!!....they can be hard but if you use xdugef it should be do-able.
(i hope there's a cg-industry perp or two around here, otherwise i doubt anyone will get that at all )

I take it you imported the model from the game then? I'm a bit curious as to how you did that, as I've been puttering around in 3dsMax myself, working on an interprative, high poly Rokh. Being able to easily reference the game model would be quite handy

do a search for 'texporter', it's around here somewhere. You can grab most all of the models as well as their corresponding maps. Think it exports to .obj (been a while), but anyway yeah its quite easy to pull them into max.

Hyperion render using Cinema 4D
Cinema 4D is pretty good for explosions IMHO. You could always do something like this and then either video post an explosion in there, or render one with pyrocluster (which was used for the comet mist in that test-clip).

Yeh thats exactly the point I got to before I changed tack to help Sylek out with Tairos. I used the comet tutorial to learn about pyrocluster but I'm not there yet I'll crack it later on. Thanks for the pointers.
I did a test anim but I need to sort the timing out. Need to cut out the engines as well.

Try a zoom-in/fly-by of a team of technicians working on the outside of the hull; something to give a sense of the size of the ship. For instance, they could be welding/repairing one of the missile bays.
Another idea: show it in structure with the crews' escape pods launching.
