hi - i have a few questions and have done a few searches (search feature on this forum is horrible!) but can't find the answers and i was hoping someone here wouldn't mind answer -
1. I see from the Invention tab that I need a bunch of high-end science skills (like Encryption, Racial Starship, etc) - does it make any difference to my chances of inventing something how high i have those levels, or does level 1 do just as well as level 5?
2. from what i've read, there is a good chance i'll just get nothing when trying to invent something, so what can i do to maximise the chances of me getting a success?
3. when looking at the list of materials, i see things like 'cryptic data interface' and was wondering where they come from? I mean, i know i can buy them from the market, but are these salvage or certain types of datacore from R&D agents, or what?
thanks in advance for any help you might be able to offer

It makes a small difference but I have found that it's not really worth the time to train anything but the encryption and starship skills above level 3. Others may disagree, and it depends on if you are training an alt or a main, but I have characters with level three and level four and the difference in success rates is negligable -- look to meta items to improve your chances of success, not skills. Invent in large batches, get as many slots as you can on it so that suceess rates even out faster. As above, meta items give you a big boost; for ships decryptors can improve your chances but you need to do the maths. If you are starting out then do some module inventions before you wade into T2 ships. Interface blueprints drop from radar exploration sites, as do the materials to make them. Ship interface blueprints only drop in 0.0.
Good luck. [IMA6E REMOVED] |

Note the interfaces are the only item that isn't consumed when you put on a job, so you can use the same interface to put on as many jobs as you want, even at the same time.
Invention Formula < This is the most widely accepted invention success formula, the decryptor stats and base stats are in the database dump, the skills and meta module chance has been reverse engineered.

I also have a related question: I have an alt that I have designed for production/invention,ans I've been looking at having said alt buy a copy of the Maller cruiser BPo,so I can try to invent Sacrilege's for my main.Would this be cost-effective,or would I do better to just buy them from the market?

I'm not sure about this particular ship as I don't invent it but, for an Ishtar:
Vexor BPO ~35M; Ship Interface ~75M; T2 Component BPO's ~30M; Frigate and Cruiser Construction Skills ?; 2x Science Skill + Encryption Skill ~30M == 180M
Saving per ship ~20M
So, financially, it's worth my while building just Ishtars for myself if I'm going to be needing ten or more.
BUT, some of the skills have heavy pre-reqs so you'd need to have a think if it was worth the training time. Also, ship prices change, it's clearly not worth it if there is a very small saving per ship. You're also risking an unlucky run that could wipe out the value of doing it for a few months.
On balance it's probably better to buy them unless you're going to be ripping through them at the rate of a few a month or unless you think you'll enjoy the invention process. [IMA6E REMOVED] |

The only saving you get from building things yourself 'because you use them' is the saving you would get in time not having to buy them or sell the more profitable product you could sell instead. Most inventors will have to switch what product they are inventing from time to time to remain profitable, eventually the market for one item will become flooded as people notice it's profitable, and the profit will be greatly reduced until people switch away to other products.

...except for the vocal few who run to the forums and complain that invention sucks and T2 BPO's need to be nerfed. ;-)

What I need to know is this: Since an invention run requires a BPC, can you do a copy of a BPO at the same station where you do your manufacturing (just taking up a line to do so) and, the following invention as well, or does it require a more specialized station and possibly a POS with labs?

You can copy, invent, and manufacture all at the same station. In order to copy and invent, it needs to be a station with a lab though, not just a factory.
Also, you can find invention slows free in hi-sec, but copy slots are often times full with a 1-2 week wait time.

You can copy in an NPC station though in a POS it only takes 65-75% of the time and there will always be a slot read if you own the POS ;)

L4 in the science skills isn't a big deal... they take under 4 days each to complete, and some of them are prerequisites for something else (building a T2 BS or JF needs L4 mecheng and L4 in the corresponding starship engineering, for instance). Also, you might want L5 in the skill(s) you're doing research for, in order to significantly increase your RP gains.
