Hi All,
Catalyst 4.6 is out and appears to contain mostly performance optimizations.
Has anyone installed this driver yet? How well does it work?
What I am really looking for is Josh's comparison of this driver to Catalyst 4.4,

I tried it, and got a "deadlock" error after about 10 minutes, so reverted back to 3.6 (on Radeon 9700 Pro btw)

My Radeaon 9200 will no longer run Eve since I updated the driver. You may want to wait for ATI to resolve the issue.

I also had a problem where eve wouldn't run after updating...I have a RADEON 8500...oddly I fixed the problem by removing all video drivers from my computer...not sure when I'll try to reinstall them...all I know is that eve is now working for me when it wouldn't before.

Hmm, I'm waiting for word as well on this release, some of the latest games don't mesh well with certain catalysts from my experience, i.e. I have to use the 4.3 catalyst release to get the games HALO, Thief:Deadly Shadows, and splinter cell pandora tomorrow to run properly. But, to be honest I haven't really had many problems running EVE on any catalyst driver set, aside from some station texture issues.

The Radeon 8500 and 9200 will not work with any Catalyst drivers above 4.1. This is the dreaded VPU bug and is mentioned in the 4.6 release notes.
I am curious as to how well the new drivers work with a 9800 Pro.

Running 4.6 on a 9000 Pro 128 with driver version 6444 and ran into the VPU error. ATI just released and update to dirver version 6451. New release still doesn't fix the VPU error in EVE. Not having problems with any other games. Play EQ as well and it really likes the new driver. Missing EVE though.

Anyone know what drivers are best to use for EVE on a Radeon 9800XT ??
I am currently running the out of the box cd drivers, and it works good, but I am willing to improve if possible ;) |

Catalyst 4.4 seem to perform the best - at least from my experience. I've also seen some other posts that make the same claim.

Edited by: Zervun on 18/06/2004 17:24:26 Remember guys, you CANNOT just double click and install new ati drivers, you MUST clean your registry out or else they will work horrible. Use driver cleaner and jv16 powertools to clean it out after you boot into standard vga safe mode and uninstall.
I've been running flawless with ATI cats since about 3.5's with this system. 99% of ATI problems are do to improper driver install. 4.6's work flawlessly.
I also suggest purchasing powerstrip from entech it's an amazing program.

It's very difficult to test these drivers because I seem to have done something to my system and nothing is running particularly speedy
I don't mind though - got a new pc to buld which means a brand new install too.
I've started receiving the "infinite loop" bug which means I've had to disable "Fast Write" via the ATI Control Panel. I've only been getting this in the last 6 weeks or so.
However, 4.6 has no visual improvement that I can see and it's hard to judge with Eve due to its general crap performance at the moment.
