I am in two minds about getting a CNR . . .
I believe it would be a good investment for the long term but leaves me pennyless for the meanwhile (although i will have both a raven and a CNR).
I plan on moving out to 0.0 with you guys obv but if something goes wrong and i lose a lot of money i wouldnt mind a backup plan of mission raping quickly to get money safely.
What is the best investment? Keeping the money i have atm (and the raven) or blowing it all (500mil) on a CNR and keeping the raven for 0.0 use?
I wouldnt mind some help from some really experienced guys on this matter. Is the CNR cost effective?

You'll want the highsec CNR. It's good to have a fully fit mission pwnmobile in highsec because things can and will go wrong in 0.0. Here's a quick list from my personal experience: - Lose billions in assets fighting off invading alliances - Lose billions in assets after you lose the stations - Your carrier pilot scams the alliance and makes off with billions of your goods - Lose billions invading other alliancers - Lose billions as blues kill your hauler
Um, it's easy to make ISK in 0.0 (I find this mostly true due to the ability to invest small amounts of time into making ISK), but it's really easy to lose ISK too. Yeah... on second though... get the highsec CNR.

I concur with this.
All my uber ships are in Empire & they will stay there. Low sec & 0.0 is just too volatile to have anything of real value floating around.
I remember as a new player with my alt I had a very nice faction fitted Hulk which I used to mine in 0.0. Sadly a Triumvirate nano gang liked it as well and they took it-1.2 billlion isk gone in a few seconds. I learnt that lesson now I fly in lowsec/0.0 what I can afford to loose So no CNR or Kronos for me in lowsec/0.0.
Your CNR belongs in highsec as your get out of jail card & I would strongly suggest you keep it there.

Once you get the CNR you will recover the money quickly. That extra launcher slot makes a noticable difference and the CNR is fairly easy to fit. The mods for your Raven will basically just move to the CNR.
That being said once you have the cash a back up Raven might not be a bad idea either. There are still a few L4's that are riskie if you do not know how to do them. I lost my first CNR to Enemies Abound 5/5 because I wasn't paying attention to the spawn rates and by the time I realised my mistake I didn't have the time to align.

500m seems high. I got a CNR recently already rigged with CC1'S FOR 440 mil on a contract.

A Pimped out CNR would probly cost you about 1bn once you got all your navy launchers and what not. But to see if its cost effective you would need to look at how much more money you can make per hour or day with the 1bn isk setup vs the normal one that costs under 200m.
Lots of people say they make about 40m/hour on lvl4s with navy ravens so you would probly make about 35m with the normal one so thats like 5m extra with the navy version(but then i didnt really work out the nummbers lol).
So to payoff the 1bn cost of the navy raven you would have to run missions for 200hours. So if your not a hard core isk farmer (running missions 10hours a days) you would probly play about 3/4hours at a time 3 times a week or 10hours a week, So that would take you about 20 weeks (140 days) befor the navy raven starts to make you any more money than just useing your normal raven
Now i dont use a raven my self and cant say how fast you make money doing missions with your setup but if you timed your missions then you ould work out how long it would take you to start making money with the CNR and if the amount of missions you will need to run.

Hum, knew there was a reason I stayed clear of Alliances.
