I've spent the last few hours trying to decide what to write.
The 'Drunk Mittani' episode has (for the most part) subsided; I applaud him for his apology and I'm glad the Mackinaw Miner is okay.
The various responses to this entire fisaco, however, give me pause for thought.
'It's only a game'. "HTFU'. 'Stop playing if you can't take the heat'.
Our words and actions don't suddenly cease to have an impact 'because it's just a game'. The pain that an unkind word can inflict, however unintentionally, doesn't somehow 'end' at our character portraits. Everything we do in our lives, online and off, has real consequinces, whether it's simply making someone quit a game or making them take one final drastic step to end their constant pain.
Most of the people that post responses to this letter are going to say things like 'Butthurt newb' or 'ITT: OP whines about joke', and some of you will without a doubt laugh it off, or laugh at me.
Bring it on.
I'm not afraid of an anonymous Internet troll. What I am afraid of is the way this community has become so desensitized, so incredibly callous, that our response to someone's very real emotional pain is to type 'lol' and pretend it's all a big joke.
Mittani has earned my respect for posting his apology. I think he learned a valuable lesson from all of this, and it won't be soon forgotten.
I hope, in time, that the EvE community can learn that same lesson, and I hope that we learn it before this happens again.
Next time, there might not be someone left to hear the apology. I support the removal of the MIttani as CSM chairman for his astoundingly bad judgement at the 2012 Fanfest. |

Fan Fest went too far.
It is part of EVE. Push it to the limit. It doesn't matter what the case is, it's what people do in EVE. It's why I am down to 3 months a year sub. It's too much. |

They actually have mentioned that they intend to make the "2 other tiers" more fun over the course of the year.

Before the Apologize of him, i was one of those who wanted him get sentenced for this act.
Now after i talked with the victim, and mittanis apologize official to the playerbase, personally to the victim. And the ISK he gave the Victim (10+ Billions) i accept his apologize, and i can say i hope some other people learned something new in the ways how they act as adult in this community. But i guess they just troll, flame and do what they trained themselves to do everyday in this community..
This story is i hope over, when not well, ccp needs to learn from this also in my opinion some things are sandbox and game relevant, others are terms of real life laws depending on the country.
I guess more people say this is my character not me, and they are not roleplayers. Maybe you are roleplayers and yet didn't know it when you make a clear borderline between the personalitys of yourself and the characters you play. |

+1 for every OP who makes a new mittani thread "War declarations are never officially considered griefing and are not a bannable offense, and it has been repeatedly stated by the developers that the possibility for non-consensual PvP is an intended feature." - CCP |

I'd be interested to know the percentage of EVE players who are actually sociopaths; I have a hunch it would be considerably higher than in the general population.
My goal in EVE has always been to find a group of like-minded non-douchebags in a universe filled with arseholes. And then go shoot at the arseholes regularly. Therefore, I have already won EVE |

I disagree.
I indubitably can't let The Mittani's misinformation and misguided arguments about larrikinism go by without comment. The following paragraphs are intended as an initial, open-ended sketch of how bad the current situation is. The Mittani's adherents care more about speaking, acting, and even thinking like The Mittani than they care about what makes sense. Surely, The Mittani is not too baleful to realize that.
Many people are incredulous when I tell them that The Mittani intends to make all of us pay for his boondoggles. "How could The Mittani be so abominable?", they ask me. "It doesn't seem possible." Well, it is undeniably possible, and now I'll explain exactly how The Mittani plans to do it. But first, you need to realize that there is no place in this country where we are safe from his secret police, no place where we are not targeted for hatred and attack. Please forgive my directness, but his confidants allege, after performing shoddy research and utilizing threadbare scholarship, that a number of his nemeses are planning to leach integrity and honor from our souls. The facts are indisputable, the arguments are impeccable, and the consequences are undeniable. So why does The Mittani think that he is the one who will lead us to our great shining future? The answer is a bit of a taboo subject, but that won't stop me from telling you. You see, some day, in the far, far future, The Mittani will realize that he was rather wide of the mark when he said that he was chosen by God as the trustee of His wishes and desires. This realization will sink in slowly but surely and will be accompanied by a comprehension of how we must work together to champion the poor and oppressed against the evil of The Mittani. What can you do to help? For starters, you might want to offer true constructive criticismGÇölistening to the whole issue, recognizing the problems, recognizing what is being done right, and getting involved to help remedy the problem. I personally derive great satisfaction in doing that sort of thing because groupthink and mob behavior are common within The Mittani's coalition. Hence, it isn't unusual for one who commits heresy against The Mittani's established dogma to be exiled from the community. The sad part is that these outcasts still refuse to believe that The Mittani's latest manifesto, like all the ones that preceded it, is a consummate anthology of disastrously bad writing teeming with misquotations and inaccuracies, an odyssey of anecdotes that are occasionally entertaining but certainly not informative. In closing, let me point out that I would be remiss if I didn't remind you that The Mittani's concept of team play is sideline sulking. |

I agree with OP. Everyone has done things they've come to really regret while being drunk. His apology seemed genuine to me, and I can appreciate that he has an in-game persona and an out-of-game persona. It would be very easy to confuse the two under the influence and under the circumstances.
People need to act like human being long enough to understand this. Everyone is entitled to make the same mistake once, I don't believe he'll make it twice.
End of, and I hope he doesn't resign. UI Iteration isn't enough, we need to start from scratch |

I've been banned from so many forums because I go in to EVE mode. They don't take it well.

Its less "The Game" and more with the "power creep" in societies anonymous psyche. Text and pixels, pixels and text. This has less to do with EVE being hardcore and mean than identifying more and more with this unabashed alter ego we create that is unsuppressed because of these glorious moments of not caring, the desensitized state of invincibility. These are mind games we like to play with ourselves. In a similar strain of liking to scare ourselves with a bungee jump or a scary movie. Yet those are momentary exhilarating moments. Jumping into the skin of a avatar, hours a week, for days within months. Wouldn't some lose a little willpower when faced with a revenue filled with like minded escapists? Not to slip into the avatar but to become it for a weekend. |
