Edited by: london on 11/09/2008 04:13:43 Okay, so far people have only been able to get anti-aliasing and HDR to work properly together on Nvidia (8800+) cards by using the little enhancer utility and forcing a game profile that has driver level support for it (such as the Oblivion profile).
ATI does not have such a utility since it's game profiles seem to be hidden within the driver and not editable by the user. That being said, ATI drivers do indeed have game specific profiles (as long as Catalyst AI is ENABLED!). Such profiles exist for games like Oblivion, Unreal Tournament 3, and Mass Effect to allow for simultaneous use of HDR with Anti-Aliasing.
To get this to work you simply need to rename the ExeFile.exe under \CCP\EVE\bin to either UT3.exe or oblivion.exe .
In my brief time testing this, the oblivion.exe profile seems to run MUCH FASTER with little to no slow down on my ATI Radeon HD 4870 while using 16x Anistropic, 8x Anti-Alias, and in game shadows set to extreme, everthing else maxed with v-sync 1680x1050. The UT3.exe profile seemed to cause a strange studder effect around stations and other large objects.
However, there is one issue with this. In order to even be able to edit an eve exe file and have the game boot I think you need to add a registry entry (the same entry that was used in the Vista 64-bit ALchemy thread to get hardware sound to work -- I'm going to try to find it, but if anyone knows what I'm tralking about, please link it!).
Also, when renaming this file (make a BACKUP!), windows seems to want to move it to some bogus /users/temp folder or something. Anyone know how to make it stop doing this so I don't have to make a copy and rename it everytime?

Edited by: london on 11/09/2008 23:24:20 Edited by: london on 11/09/2008 23:23:13 Start Regedit as admin. Go to "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\" and create a new DWORD there. Call it "SafeDllSearchMode" and assign the value 0 (zero), should be default anyways. Reboot.
I guarantee that it does indeed work, but the whole having to duplicate and rename the exefile.exe every time because windows (vista 64 in this case) moves it is getting kind of old.
This was a total fluke, but I know it was a registry entry that entailed something about skipping the check applications (eve?) perform to see if any files have been tampered with.
People used this entry to get around the whole eve start location folder deal when trying to get ALchemy working for hardware accelerated sound in Vista 64, since you can't simply just add the ALchemy .dll files into the eve folder alone.
So since I already had this entry, I decided to try the old renaming of the EXE trick to see if the ATI drivers would be fooled into doing AA with HDR, and low and behold... it worked!

i created the dword entry, but it doesnt start eve when i rename the exefile. you can see the splash screen for a millisec and then it stops. if i execute the changed exefile.exe directly (i.e. oblivion.exe) i get a error message and the file gets moved to that temp folder you talking about.
so sadly, it doesnt work for me ;( i have win xp pro, maybe it only works with vista?

bumping this for more testing. A ton of eve users have been wanting a fix like this to work for ages now. CCP, take a look into this please, it's 2008, and your game doesn't do AAA/HDR without significant mods for any type of card. It would probably take minimal work to implement it. I know it's a bother and takes time from other things, but it simply needs to be done; it's standard in every modern game. -----------

Edited by: london on 21/09/2008 19:33:33 What can I say? It works for me on my Vista 64 install. :/ I'm also using the new catalyst 8.9.
It's a temporary fix and it's rather annoying since it moves and deletes the renamed (oblivion.exe) 'Exefile.exe' every time I want AA with HDR.
And by running the renamed (oblivion.exe) 'Exefile.exe' in the /bin folder makes a command prompt looking thing open up in an extra window in the background. It doesn't work if I try to do this trick with the normal 'Eve.exe' in the main directory.
It was easier to force game specific driver profiles on my Nvidia card, oh well... at least the ATI does everything else better.

Linkage
This was the solution to the audio problem that involved some eve client redirection. If this isn't what made it work, then I don't know what did.
Maybe it's an XP vs. Vista deal.

Confirmed working with XP Pro SP3
Once you rename ExeFile.exe to oblivion.exe, set that file to hidden, the "offending" file will still be deleted but Eve will launch with both AA & HDR !

I didn't have to set my to hidden, but that's good that it works for you.
You still have to recreate the offending file every time, right? How can we make it NOT move it every time.. that's the question. :P
That might require some registry wizardry.

!!! CCP -- Please ask ATI to include a driver level profile for Eve Online in their next driver release so we don't have to mess around with stuff like this. They've done it for Unreal engine 3 games, they've done it for Oblivion, and now they need to do it for Eve!
Clearly HDR + AA work together, it's about time for the software to catch up.

Edited by: huxorator on 24/09/2008 12:29:13 If I get you guys right, you need to copy and rename a file, and then start it. If that is all, why don't you write a simple batch file that does the job for you? You could even use the attrib command there to set it to hidden attribute if needed. The only bad thing about batch files is that you cannot use that file if you launch eve thru Evelauncher.
I am back at home tomorrow evening, so cannot confirm the fix is working and can't help with that rename stuff until then. --- IGS Website | Killboard | Game-Time Cards |

here's the script for 32bit OS, just copy paste the following text into a .bat file (ex: eve_hdr.bat. Don't put this file into eve folder or it will be moved to temp folder (eve does that, not windows).
xcopy /y "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\bin\exefile.exe" "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\" ren "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\exefile.exe" oblivion.exe xcopy /y "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\oblivion.exe" "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\bin\" DEL "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\oblivion.exe" "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\bin\oblivion.exe

Ok, That¦s starting to get annoying. I made the registry change, I tried renaming the exefile.exe to oblivion.exe and I even tried all the combinations of hidden, read only attribs, different users, changing ntfs security... but everytime I try to execute the file oblivion.exe I get, first, the message "Relocating Offending files... failed to move the file C:\program files\ccp\eve\bin\oblivion.exe blah blah, and then that Verification Failure message... your EVE client installation may have modified, damaged or... etc. The game dont start.
Both in XP sp2 and Vista 32. 4870 and cat 8.9.

AAHDR01.PNG AAHDR02.PNG AAHDR03.PNG AAHDR04.PNG AAHDR05.PNG
Seems like the AA filter doesn't like the way the HDR filter handle extra transparent edges when they are catching some sun, It misbehave and returns bright pixels which are then picked up by the bloom filter and bloomed to epic proportions.
Here is what the tip of a Cheetah's "mast" look like with the camera zoomed all the way in :
AAHDR06.PNG
No bloom blotches, which means that the AA filter has enough significant pixels to work with when supersampling, my guess is that when enough bright samples (from the leading and tailing edges of a polygon catching some light) end up being blended together, they result in a pixel scoring high enough to be bloomed.

Yup, now we just need to find the name of an executable that would trick Catalyst AI into applying an "Eve Compliant(Ö)" AA filter.
Otherwise, we'll have to poke CCP & ATI until they are bothered enough to decide to do something about it.

Yes!. Based on the info I found searching eve's forums (Kudos to Loreson, http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=650997&page=3) I found a way to make it work. On Windows Vista 32 at least.
You have to copy the exefile.exe, rename the copy of exefile.exe to oblivion.exe as ever. Then you have to run it (oblivion.exe) as admin. You will get the offending error. Don't click the ok button yet! Go to the folder the error is talking about. With the folder opened, you have to see the two oblivion.exes (one on that temp folder and the other on the eve\bin), now click the ok button on the offending error message. The game starts!
Keep in mind you have to force the desired level of FSAA on the catalyst control panel. To have Vync On, put it as "always on" at the catalyst's controls and "interval default" at the eve's video configuration. To get even greater quality you can select the 30bit color depth (Vista only).
The bad news. You have to repeat all the process averytime. The temp's path changes each time the program runs, so it's very difficult to batch it.
I will try for XP tonight.

That's strange, how come the posted batch method didn't work for you? The error pop up shouldn't interfere with it starting the exe, and the batch file simply makes it so you don't have to manually re-name it every time.

This is the final solution
1./ Copy the bin folder to bin-hdr or anything else in the game folder 2./ browse that folder 3./ rename exefile to oblivion.exe 4./ Create shotcut to that file 5./ click properties at that shortcut, and change working directory to original bin folder 6./ Enjoy
I have done also vbscript that do this automaticaly.
1./ Create new file eve-hdr.vbs in the game folder (where the bin folder is located) 2./ Click edit at that file and paste there this code:

Ok, can confirm that the AA works now. Problems with the last method are:
- EVE-Launcher won't recognize the oblivion.exe as and eve instance, so you can't reposition your window (which was for playing windowed without seeing window edges).
- In fullscreen, I get 90 FPS easily, but in windowed it drops to 15. This means playing 2 accounts on 2 screens is kinda impossible (you want windowed for that). --- IGS Website | Killboard | Game-Time Cards |

Untrusted search path vulnerability in Winlogon, when SafeDllSearchMode is set to 0 which means disabled, allows local users to gain privileges via a malicious DLL in the UserProfile directory, aka "User Profile Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability."
Set SafeDllSearchMode to 1 Setting SafeDllSearchMode to 1 within the registry ensures the DLL search path order targets the system directory before the current working directory or User Profile directory.
Note Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk. For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or view the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe.
Note Microsoft recommends backing up the registry before you edit it. 1. Click Start, click Run, type "regedt32 " (without the quotation marks), and then click OK. 2. In Registry Editor, locate the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Control\Session Manager 3. Add the DWORD Value: SafeDllSearchMode. Set the value to 1. This value set the default DLL search order to the system directory. By default, this key does not exist on Windows 2000. 4. You must restart your system for this change to take effect.
On Windows XP Service Pack 1, Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2003 Service Pack1 SafeDllSearchMode is set to 1 by default within the operating system code and is therefore not vulnerable. Adding the registry key with a value other than 1 will change the default configuration.
If SafeDllSearchMode is enabled, the search order is as follows:
1. The directory from which the application loaded. 2. The system directory. Use the GetSystemDirectory function to get the path of this directory. 3. The 16-bit system directory. There is no function that obtains the path of this directory, but it is searched. 4. The Windows directory. Use the GetWindowsDirectory function to get the path of this directory. 5. The current directory. 6. The directories that are listed in the PATH environment variable. Note that this does not include the per-application path specified by the App Paths registry key. The App Paths key is not used when computing the DLL search path.
If SafeDllSearchMode is disabled, the search order is as follows:
1. The directory from which the application loaded. 2. The current directory. 3. The system directory. Use the GetSystemDirectory function to get the path of this directory. 4. The 16-bit system directory. There is no function that obtains the path of this directory, but it is searched. 5. The Windows directory. Use the GetWindowsDirectory function to get the path of this directory. 6. The directories that are listed in the PATH environment variable. Note that this does not include the per-application path specified by the App Paths registry key. The App Paths key is not used when computing the DLL search path.

Originally by: Eraseri Im sry to say... none of those tricks work for me. Im using Ati tray tools on my 4870. I tried switching from premium to classic graphics and amazingly forced-AA worked there. But for some reason doesn't work in premium graphics!
I tried those oblivion scripts and stuff... no luck
Restart your computer maybe ?.

Guys, this solution was indeed an epic win. It sorted everything and it looked great..........until today's patch. Following today's patch, this solution no longer works. Could somebody please help? It's just not the same with no AA. Thanks in advance

Since the last patch, I noticed I did not need the workaround any more. Now I can force AA in the CCC and it works in the game with HDR.

Aye I also wanted to make sure it was not a driver only fix. Since I was on the 8.12's. Good to know the 8.11's also show the fix so it must be a Patch fix. Also im on a 4870X2.
Now though I need to localize the reason my client keeps crashing randomly on me. Since I believe the 1.0.3 patch I have not been able to do anything productive since I will get booted at random times. Doesn't appear to be a hardware/Driver issue since others I talk to with Nvidia hardware are getting the same thing.
Sigh CCP Fixes one thing and borks 4 others...

Confirming it's working for me as well; 4870x2, Vista 64 and cat 8.12.
Must say the old oblivion hack seemed to be running faster though.

People used this entry to get around the whole eve start location folder deal when trying to get ALchemy working for hardware accelerated sound in Vista 64, since you can't simply just add the ALchemy .dll files into the eve folder alone."
Please, can you recall where did you get that information? I think thats the most important point to get the problem solved. I would even pay a few millions for that info.
EVE-Online's hardware acceleration fix for VISTA below:
Step 1: Start Regedit as admin. Go to "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\" and create a new DWORD there. Name it "SafeDllSearchMode" and assign the value 0 (zero). REBOOT Step 2: Create a folder somewhere (i put it in the ccp folder) name it: eveAL Step 3: use Creative ALchemy and make the game path be that eveAL folder Step 4: right click on the EVE shortcut -> click "properties" -> shortcut tab -> where it says "START IN" in that box change the location to the eveAL folder (but keep the target location the same)
EXAMPLE (mine): Target: D:\GAMES\CCP\EVE\eve.exe Start In: D:\GAMES\CCP\eveAL
NOW to get the hardware acceleration Box to be clickable just run the EVE in XP SP2 compatibility mode (btw this is not needed its only if u want to make the button light up) But..Running compatibility mode Alone WILL NOT Fix it You MUST do Steps 1-4

In most games the gamers make the mods to change the plot and story. In Eve it's the other way around. Players make it work and devs do the missions
lmao GOOD ONE
well for all new drivers, and games the users have to edit them now to get the to work correctly on their computers, i think its about time for companies to stop hiring MONKEYS as a source for cheap laber ___________________

The exact same artifacts on cloaked ships occurred on Nvidia cards as well.
I don't think it's a bad trade off.
there was a work-around to artifacts problem (you need nHancer) add 0xf0000045 in the AA compatibility box under the Compatibility tab
Before it was just 0x00000045 but replacing the 0 with the f fixed some artifacts ___________________
