Anybody play this game and would it be worth a purchase in the near future?. I liked Battlefield 2 when I played it and occasionally still play it, but I heard 2142 is a lot of fun as well. Any thoughts?. ---------------------------------------- Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes.

I loved Battlefield 2. I'm also a huge fan of PlanetSide. So, in an effort to cut my expenditures down a bit, I've considered buying Battlefield 2142 to replace the other two games.
Don't know how it is, though, but I played a demo a little bit. Ahh, the joys of sniping.

BF 2142 was fun, though some of the weapons didn't really feel balanced some times. Gotta love under slung rocket launchers though
Of course now that I remember BF2142 has that absolutely awesome star wars mod out for it. Linky.
Also, as far as I know, BF: Bad Company is only available for consoles...and ALL battlefield games are 'squad shooters' if you're playing it right- you know, as a team. ***** Rule 27: 'Don't be afraid to be the first to resort to violence.' -The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Pirates [schlockmercenary.com] |

Same thing as BF2 but with different weapons really.
-many weapons don't feel "right". They have a fake plastic feel/sound when shooting them compared to the weapons in BF2 (except the SCAR which is weird).
-Unlike BF2 you actually have to land half a magazine on someone to drop them. Seriously, using the Lambert is like shooting one of those air powered Tommy guns at the Circus at someone.
-hated the grenade spam in BF2? Don't worry, they now have ROCKET grenade spam. Just try and advance two inches in a Titan hallway when you've got 3 guys spamming time delayed rockets at you.
-LMG's don't lose accuracy when they fire long strings. They actually get more accurate. Its a weird concept and you either really like it or really hate it. It makes firing an LMG easier when standing if you can control the barrel.
-so good bye to circle jerk helo's and jet bomb spam. The hover-ships in BF2142 are the only flight capable attack ships and are no where near as powerful. The guided missiles don't insta-kill armor or transports. The rockets are guided so air to air combat can be a little simplistic.
-MANPAADS: also know as MAN Portable Air Defense System. Fancy name for handheld anti-air rocket launcher. Its tracking isn't very good which means you have to learn to fire from good angles. Has a bad rep from people that don't like complicated things like optimal firing angles or texting in good english. In the hands of a pro it is deadly.
-Tanks are snipers. Now instead of a main gun and a coaxial machine gun you get a main gun and a super zoom feature which allows you to shoot rounds at extreme ranges. Unfortunately they are very explosive so its difficult to take out huges swathes of infantry. Hover tanks take some getting used to and noobies often slip and slide across the map. Pro's can circle strafe like mad.
-Active camo. Probably the coolest thing in BF2142. Instead of a ghillie suit which doesn't blend into a single color on the map you get to turn invisible. Its like a Predator cloak except if you stand still you are completely invisible. Moving makes you a blur. It can only be sustained for a short time and is dependent on your battery charge (it recharges overtime). It makes a distinctive "electronic screetch" sound which lets everyone close by know there's a cloak person close. It requires you to hold the control stick instead of a weapon when in use.
Thats about it. There are a few other features in there like pod jumps which are ok but nothing to get worked up about. Its an ok game but I still play BF2 more often than BF2142. The PKM just feels right compared to the Ganz.

I never played BF2, but I really enjoyed BF2142. It might look a bit dated graphicswise, but that also means that it is playable by people who don't own a Crysis-powning machine. I love to drive the hovertank or go behind enemy lines and wreak havoc. I don't know if the squad/commander system resembles BF2, but it works very well. If you play as a small team with supporting veteran players you can really drive the enemy crazy. My only problem was with super chopper pilots on some maps who are effectively unkillable as the ground-air weaponry is pretty weak. You will also get killed a great many times by snipers which can get frustrating. Still, it's worth purchasing just to use the big mech. -------------------------------------------------- If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles - Sun Tzu |

Edited by: P''uck on 14/09/2008 11:11:10 Rewarding EA for selling a game (at full price) that is basically a mod of BF2 is not really a good idea imho... especially if you look at the price of some of the expansions, which usually just contain some guns and some maps.
(edit: some of them also were full price )

As far as I know the only expansion is Northern Strike which is not full price. Two of the three maps were very interesting, the bridge fight map did not do it for me. -------------------------------------------------- If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles - Sun Tzu |

I played BF2 and play 2142 extensively. I much preferred 2142 due to it's interesting future setting, higher choices for customisability and the most awesome sniper rifle ever [Zeller-H Heavy Sniper . . . perfect SFX . . . looks the business . . . one-shot-kill on light armour troops]. I loved BF2, but 2142 clinched it for me without any real reason .
I felt the guns were balanced just right. Whereas in BF2 some guns are still overpowered, in BF2142 each class has a good choice of guns and weapons with different bonuses and drawbacks. So for example, as an engineer [AT/engineer] you can choose to have a Pilum H-AVR, which basically fires a more powerful, unguided, faster rocket at your target, which can one-shot most vehicles if it hits the rear armour. You can also opt to have handheld AA [something that is sorely missing in BF2 to this day] which is now very effective, but is useless against ground vehicles. Finally, you can opt for a simple guided missile launcher that is balanced between attacking different types of vehicles but fires the weakest, slowest projectile. It's that kind of tactical, situation-based choice which I just feel BF2 doesn't have yet 2142 excels at providing.

bf 2142 provides the saaw 86 anti air rockets which was the reason i bought it in the end . i never like the fact that jets could ( in the right hands ) just spam flags with bombs . but 2142 gave infantry a legit way to strike back at air craft which was sorely mmissing in bf2 also many kits were folded into each other like the medic and assault are the same kit in 2142 , the engineer and anti tank are the same so are sniper and spec ops combined .
it has it's weaknesses but over i find it superior to bf2

The only thing I have ever complained about with BF2142 was the difference in the Engineers secondary weapon. PAC got this tiny toy gun that always misses, while EU gets the long-range, really accurate, **** machine-gun.
Also: RDX DemoPak K: 514 D: 151
99% of my demo kills were jihading walkers that were being piloted by people who I couldn't kill in my Neko

Walkers can be taken down fairly easily though. A Pilum round to the rear vent and it's basically dead.
Also, I actually quite liked the PAC engineer PDW. It's scope is much better than that on the EU engineer's PDW and the rate of fire is absolutely crazy. Although I'm a Recon at heart, loving just about any combo of the sniper and spec ops gear that you care to mention, I would often find myself playing as an engineer when bumped to the PAC side just for the PDW.
I mean it empties a 50-round clip in about 6 seconds if you hold down your mouse button

See the mods I prefer with bf2 removed the uav, 2142 gives the support guy a portable infantry tracker(if you get the expansion) it sucked half the fun out of the game.
It's fun but bf2 is still installed where 2142 isn't, there was a good 4-5 months where I'd play it semi regularly. A herd of cattle A flock of geese A lot of isk |

I made the mistake of buying BF2142, not one of the better choices I made...
Mostly because I liked flying things in BF2, since the Helicopters actually felt pretty realistic and took that little something to fly, moreso to kill stuff. ...which is completely thrown out of the window in 2142 in favour of those hoverjet things from Planetside that are pretty useless for anything but getting across the map... not that you need to since they're tiny anyway
Add to that Explosive Spam so bad that certain maps just become stalemates of each team shoot round a corner but never getting anywhere because anyone who tries to advance is blown to pieces
I hate it. It sucks. Don't buy it. Play BF2 instead

Ive played the game a couple of weeks, I must say I have big reasons not to get it, however there are many reason to get it.
Pros:huge maps/many classes and upgrades/its not just point and shoot, ie there are indirect ways of helping your team and hurting your enemy.
Cons:limited gametypes/all of the maps are big, none are small 5v5 maps/the endgame for most classes isnt that great.

I play both BF2 and BF2142 and I must say that you're right. Also sniping in BF2142 is ... not what I expected. A pity really. Recently I started playing a BF2 mod called Project reality but if there are more people here that play vanilla BF2 we could get together on a server once in a while.
P.S. I like flying choppers too but I prefer the gunner position. Won't you take me for a ride? please, please, pretty please? hahah

This has turned into one of my big played games and you'll most likely find me on a GHF map on seismor who is my recon.
Each class can bring a lot to the field and in pairs they can be deadly.
Recons are individual havoc machines. With Demo charges and the cloak you can take out land and air based radar in no time and leave the opponent blind. You can also knock out the titan generator real quick with them. Or you can opt for AP mines and the motion scope for better accuracy (so they say, my scope still weaves around like mad) and sit at a control point and wait for suckers to so up and stand still. Also if you have that tank or APC causing troubles a few demo packs to the rear armor makes short work of the vehicle.
Usually one of the first things I do now is run for the enemy intelligence (radar), take it out, then wait somewhere nearby for the engineer to come out and fix it then pop him. You know you've done your job when you hold down 5+ people who are hell bent on finding you.
Engineers are lethal to armor. They can lay down EMP mines or anti-vehicle mines around surrounding grab points forcing people to get out if they dont want to lose their vehicle. A pair of them hiding in the rocks means lots of dead tanks. They are also ideal for piloting the vehicles as well if you choose the kit that letsyou repair on the spot without getting out.
Support is my other favorite. A good support at a choke point can knock out many troops with that heavy gun. They also supply ammo for other troops in the field (big + on gaining points per round). You can also pack emp grenades stopping vehicles for a few seconds or really mucking up troops visuals. Also in your kit you can choose the little sentry gun which is awesome on the titan or a small personal shield to hide behind.
Assault are the basic frontline troops and medics, although it's rare you find someone who actually heals/brings you back to life. I haven't dealt much with this class though so I realy don't know all that they come with.
For the gunships I prefer the russian one as it provides more visibility and personally I feel it maneuvers better. The pilot gets to use rockets while the gunner gets his great anti troop chaingun or the anti-vehicle guided missile (best results when fired at the rear of vehicle). A good team can keep both the ground and air cleared for most of the game. I also like the hover option also I don't use it too often but instead just tap the forward thrust for slow strafes over a control point while the gunner does his thing.
For the Tanks I prefer the EU tracked version but thats because I suck with hover tank. Usually in this case my copilot drives and I man the upper gun. If your good with the russian hovertank though you can do circles around the EU with ease. Watch out for recon or engineers running up to your tank though.
APC's are good for movie lots of troops from point A to B and each one can shoot including the driver. Driver gets a pair of chainguns and the second position gets a 3 burst mortar and EMP pack. Also everyone behind those 2 spots can rick click and launch themselves in a drop pod to get onto the titan or to just get away from a dieing APC.
Walkers are ok but IMO not the best thing out there. Granted they can move around easier than a tank, get guns, rockets, and anti air gear but they're petty difficult to move around in especially with your legs and turret aren't lined up (leads to confusion sometimes). In assault maps though when this is the only armor they can be a god on the field.
Buggies are one of my favorites. They can 3 people and can get you from point A to Point B really quickly. It's also a blast when you flying and a gunship is hell bent to catch you. With luck you'll have engineer on the back shooting back while you weave like mad to avoid rockets.
My biggest issues are the aimbots, They are everywhere (never join a sniper only map). Quite a few cheaters in that game

I tried out the demo(and low and behold people still had servers running, just like a few months ago when I played Red Faction online). I was impressed with Titan mode. It was a lot of fun using the dropships to land on the ship, or using the APC to launch pods onto it. Plus the customization feature looks quite interesting.
I'll buy it. ---------------------------------------- Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes.
