Edited by: Dro Nee on 15/09/2008 06:14:25 Anyone who can remember being in newb corp chat (or anyone who recently has started an alt) will recall that the first, and seemingly only, response to people asking about pvp falls under 3 categories 1)DonÆt. You will die 2)DonÆt until you have more skills 3)DonÆt until you have more ISK (because of #1)
After being in EVE for 3 days and listening to these arguments I set out to see if it was real or not.
I started out by following a can flipping guide I found here on the forums. I did some research into what a hulk could be capable of by looking at EFT as someone said they are the biggest fish I could catch. I figured 5 med drones, especially t2 hammers, would eat me for lunch so pretty much gave up on thinking this was a real option. Here is where luck came into the picture: I was passing through some off the path .8 system when I see a hulk on my 360deg scan. There was only 1 other person in the system so I went to take a look. I arrive in the belt and see a hulk with 5 mining drones out. It occurs to me that it could only have 5 light drones left in its bay and MAYBE I have a chance. I run over and flip the guys can (he was in some other newb corp so I wasnÆt worried about corpmates arriving) he tells me off in local then deploys 4 acolyte IÆs. I manage to kill off the drones when I am about 40% structure and turn my attention to him. Long story long, when he gets into structure I tell him that it will cost 200mil for his ship and pod. He laughs and says I cant pod kill him or I will dieà to which I said ôthis incursis was free and the gear is all of about 500k. I donÆt careö That seemed to worry him enough that he paid the full 200mil about 15 seconds later.
Skip forward 2 months or so: I now have 2.7mil SP and am the owner of a brand new ishkur. I can use t2 hobs but only t1 weapons/tank mods (I started off with the spec ops build). Now I start my PvP career in earnest! I know I have to find a way to limit my engagements and have to fight smart so I find a quiet-ish lowsec area that seems like it will fit the bill. No large corps seem to be around, and there is a fair amount of traffic. I set up shop and this shows what a nooblet can do with a lil forethought, a little patience, and a bunch of people who think he will be an easy kill:
http://www.battleclinic.com/eve_online/pk/view/player-Dro+Nee-kills.html
Today I lost that ishkur, to some people who decided to team up on me. The Cormerant was baità.and like a good noob I took it. When the other two warped in I was sure I was insta-boned, but to my surprise (and thiers as well) I was able to kill the cormerant, the jaguar, and get the crusader into structure before I popped. It was a great fight and I didnÆt feel bad losing the shipà. I had a good run with it and wound up being in the ISK hole by the cost of the rigs.
To many the kills I have are not remarkable, they are after all only frig hulls and not faction fit BS. It also may not have been the most efficient way of doing things which some might point out. This post isnÆt meant for those people though, this post is for those other nooblets out there who want to fight but keep being told they cant. You will lose your internet spaceshipà but its 1000 more fun than mission running/mining, and on occasion you get to have the benefit of royally ****ing off an older more ô1337ö toon ( I got several bitter and angry comments in local after they popÆd) by pwnÆing them because they underestimated you!

This thread delivers.
There are those who are waiting to PvP until they can fly a T2-fit battleship. And then there are those who realize PvP is not primarily a matter of ships and modules, but of pilot attitude and mindset.

afaik you can scram, web, nos, and shoot the pod of someone who has been flagged to you for stealing but once you place the final blow that's when Concord shows up - so even if you do not want to lose your ship to Concord by finishing off the pod you can always catch it and hold it there to try and convince your target of your ability to do so and so that he would pay up

I have a friend who has recently discovered that pvp is the way to go in eve, and as such, has a day old character that he is taking out to do some high sec stuff, he is a little crazy, to the point of "its a hulk, with cans, i am going in!" in some crazy ship with next to no firepower and no scramblers etc (having declared that missions are too boring, and rather just get stuck straight in).
He has the right attitude though, if he loses his ship, it costs less than 150k to replace, if he manages to pull it off, thats a bonus.
He eventually plans to go down to low-sec, where i am sure he will be creating equally as much havoc as he has on his first day in high-sec.

anyways, sounds like you're having a great start on the best of what eve offers! and you're proving what i've always said to new players, if they want to, they can pvp after 2-3 days of playing just fine :)
btw, use you're advantage of being underestimated as an advantage, it won't last forever ;)

Nice job. I definitely agree that you shouldn't listen to those people telling you you can't PvP without SP or money or friends. You might have to be selective about your targets and you might die, but who gives a crap as long as you are having fun and can still sc**** together another T1 frigate? ----- My Pirate Blog: http://evenewb.blogspot.com/

Been living in low sec for a bit now after i graduated to the ishkur. Now that my gunner support skills are at 3 and i can use t2 blasters i may make a catalyst- everyone and thier mother says that they are the "suk" for pvp so it will be fun if i can get some decent kills with that as well.

Dang! Sabre kill from a noob in a T1 fit ishkur? Congrats man!
Its nice to see that not ALL the noobs have been brainwashed by the highsec dwelling carebears into thinking PvP is for old toons in 0.0 only. If more people had your attitude maybe we could quit having the "how to re-populate low sec" threads.
BTW- I look forward to shooting you once i get back.... we have the same stomping grounds

Edited by: Verx Interis on 16/09/2008 18:43:16 You can pirate on day 2. I made a new character in one of my character slots once, trained up scrams, and within an hour had a cormorant kill. I almost got an exqueror kill but it had a bit too many drones.
Solo piracy is feasable, but it's hard and you need small ships that can ninja everywhere. You also have to be able to move a lot to find the latest victims.
Nice job though, I like seeing people who don't succumb to the lowsec horror stories.
Really, the earlier you get into PvP the better, you're less likely to lose something big and expensive.

This is the real problem with noob corps and the whole new player experience in general.. it turns people into carebears. Fortunately there a few bright new players like you who read the pvp guides straight away and get into the action. Good read.

I can attest to Dro Nee's caliber. Though I've never gotten him to fight me (For some reason he's scared of me) my brother (who just started playing, and is the comorant that was bait for Dro Nee's Loss) was really inspired by his skill. He's a great person, who is quite good at what he does, which is knowing when to pick his battles and kill things accordingly. I would argue that the one thing he had that other rookies seemed not to was isk. That is easily negated by the fact that he was able to ransom a hulk for 200m.
I support what Dro Nee is doing, and I really like the angle he took in this little experiment. I hope you keep sharing the message with rookies.

Does every high sec dweller own a drake?! I was scouting new systems and had to go through some out of the way high sec so i thought i would try a few more can flips (between skill books and replacing an ishkur the wallet is getting thin).... 3 tries, 3 gtfo's. I flip the can and they come back in a drake. everytime. What gives?

Not only amongst mission runners... The amount of drakes I see in lowsec everywhere is scary...
Took a few fits to EFT but can't figure out what they find in it... Might have a pretty good tank, but the dps is like spitting cotton-balls out of your bridge-window...
Maybe against cruisers and below?
To the op: Well done, keep on catchin' people slippin'... ;) Word of advice: Choose your corp carefully, it plays a big part in your EVE-life. In most cases you'll be better off if YOU look for a corp you WANT to join, rather than being recruited into some random corp. Just don't rush it...
Props again, nice thread!
