And as to writing it Eve, are you gonna argue withthe creators of the game? if you wanted to be perfectly correct, as your half-arsed troll indicates, you'd write it EVE as the devs do. 1/10 on the troll-o-meter, but ONLY because you got me to respond. 1 point for that :)

Scientists warned that the wormhole would close again within a few decades. Racing agaisnt time, construction began on a manmade portal to allow safe passage between the home system and "EVE" Taken from the 1st page of the manual (found my original boxes while searching for Warcraft3 cd, typical how its never what you're looking for....)

It was still all-caps but whatever FONT was being used made the capital V slightly lower than the two capital E's.... thus it looked like EvE even though it was really EVE. But because of it a lot of people got in the habit of typing EvE because it looked more like the logo back then. Been playing EvE since Beta. Just because you (op) haven't been playing long enough to remember the original font used for the EvE game doesn't make those who do remember it wrong. PS: I, personally, usually type it EVE(which is correct) but just to tweak the OP I think I'll continue using EvE for a while :)

Sorry, but the poster you are criticizing is correct. If 80% of the people change the usage of a word then the meaning changes. Do not assume that the meaning behind a word is in any way "real". The connection between the symbol and its meaning is arbitrary, by definition. Your very use of the word "ignorant" implies a cultural bias. The idea of correctness in language use has more to do with the power structure of a culture than the realness of word meaning. Ask someone who is grounded in a single language and they will speak of the correct meaning. Back up and take a deeper, historic look at language change or look at how different groups handle the same language and this relationship will become clear. For instance, I am currently eating lunch, using a napkin to wipe my face. Try asking for such a thing in certain parts of the UK.

Actually it makes my point so maybe it isn't a total loss. Having written a thesis I can tell you that I used the rules given to me by the powers that be. Indeed, the rules can be seen as aiding the transferee of information. However, in preparation for said thesis I read a lot of articles from several different disciplines. Each had a specific format that authors are expected to follow. The differences can be relatively large. Not analogous to replacing "you" w/"*es" but still noticeable. However, if enough people decided that "***es" was a viable replacement for "you" then it would be. ps. You all might try a web search on Lisa C. Dietrich since we are on the subject.
