like mining!
making stuff!!

it is way cooler then PvP

Hate to tell ya pal, that's still PvP. Just not combat-oriented PvP.
Okay, maybe not the NPC killing, but when you sell your loot it is.

Um, if I wanted that, I'd just play Freelancer on single player mode.

Combat drives the economy.
The Economy drives the fleet battles.
Jihadswarm drove the inventors to research and build extra mackinaws and hulks on the market.
Mining and other production related activities help the new players with a different source of income other than missions or losing ships too easily because they're new and inexperienced.
Life is about memories the more the better.
