So I'm about 2 weeks away from getting myself into a Charon Freighter and I was looking over the specs and found out that the freighter class from the looks of it can not fit...anything?!? Basically am I going to be flying a slow moving shuttle with huge cargo hold? How do I defend myself? Do I just hope and pray I dont get ganked?

lol you do realise quite how much firepower would be required to bring you down in high sec, don't you? You'll be fine
Unless of course you're going to the less savoury neighbourhoods

Not that often, especially not in high-sec. You need a ton of firepower to take one down, and they rarely have enough in their cargo to make it worth it. CELESTE LOTTERIES: Where losing is almost harder than winning... almost. |

Yeah I get that it took a lot to take one down, but wow...no modules at all...I figured I could change the setup depending on what I'm doing...more cargo space in safe areas, and more defense in those bad neighbourhoods...

To answer your question. There is no defense the ship itself can offer except the high amount of HP you have for structure which does take a bit if time to chew threw.
I also strongly suggest you never take the thing into low sec without at the very least a scout and if at all possible a strong escort. To fly solo without at least a scout into low sec from Empire is rather foolhardy IMO.
I fly strictly in Empire with many trips into Jita. I have never been ganked in my freighter and I don't expect that I ever will be.
I thought I read that this latest patch was supposed to make Concord's response even more stern than before for suicide ganks in Empire space. I hope to hear something on the forums about that soonish

Since the last patch? I think freighter ganking will drop quite a bit. Anyone have a recent (post-patch) kill board link?
On another note: I've been flying a freighter for over a year....and have never been ganked. While the risk is there, it's not all that high (assuming you're not carrying $10 billion in t2 mods in your hold).

New question in same regards: How much is insurance on a Charon and how much is payout? IS it the same deal as most T2 ships?

Actually, it's much better than t2 insurance, but it's not worth it unless you expect someone to attack you. This is highly unlikely unless you've annoyed a lot of people. ----- DIY copying in Liekuri 20:1 mineral compression Nomad JF for sale |

Well my corp lives in 0.0 space so I'm sure at some point i will be getting one out there for POS refuel/looting industrial rats etc. So how much is Insurance approx?

The corp should (if they can afford one) buy a Jump freighter or a carrier if you can fly one if you plan to take it out to 0.0. Jump freighters can jump multiple systems wich both decrease traveltime and risk to die.
It's doable in a ordinary freighter, but it's frigging hard to keep that slow mofo safe (unless you guys have a safe route to use) _____________________________ Entering the Intergalactic Summit forum is like walking into a Startrek convention; All you'll see is a bunch of nerds and you'll go "WTF?" |

Well my plan is to get into a carrier but I'm quite a ways away from that. Figure I'll get a freighter when I can afford one and start making some ISK going to Jita picking up cheap ammo and selling in mission hub. Eventually I will get into a jump freighter when I have the proper skills and then Carrier. So How much for insurance on a freighter??

Depends on ship but about 230 mil for plat. BTW, Freighters do not get high-sec ganked...this doesn't happen that often. Especially with the new changes to Concord.

Remember that Freighters can operate their holds in space, so I am not quite sure how POS fueling will work out, but I am positive Industrial Rat-looting will be out of the question.

Can someone further explain this? Why can I not use my cargo hold while in space??

You can only move things to and from your cargo when near an online POS, and only into the POS or corp hangar I think. You cannot loot or remove the contents of containers with a freighter.

The only time a freighter is worth the risk in 0.0 hauling is when it accompanies a large fleet that protects it just by being large and scary.
The insurance on a freighter is a waste of ISK in my opinion just like it is a waste for most T2 ships. The actual cost of the ship is far higher than the payout made by the insurance. Better to save your ISK and to remember you still get the minimal insurance payout if it goes boom. |

It's really sad that the freighter is nothing more than a giant shuttle. How much more boring can you get? I've thought hard about training for it, but don't really see the point unless you are already into alliance play. Otherwise your return on investment is going to be pretty slow.
The reason I say it's sad is that you need a fair bit of (player) skill and experience to get going with a freighter...and once you've attained that goal you can't really do anything other than navigate and watch local - yawn. If you're a trader type you might have a lot more fun sitting in station and booking couriers to do the leg work for you while you plot your business empire. It'll shave about 1-2% off your profits but you'll have an extra billion of capital to push around, plus relative peace of mind.
I hope one day there'll be a mini-freigheter with something like the capacity of the rorqual but with some slots. Industrials aren't mini-freighters, they're micro-freighters.

Freighter cargo hold doesnt work like normal cargo hold. You cant access it, put something into it or remove anything from it, unless you're at the station or near POS hangar.
I THINK you can pick up general freight container floating in space, and your cargo gets jettisoned in those if your freighter is destroyed.
Do the research before you buy the ship anyway, in this game you never know :)
