So I started a second account and it throws me into the Rookie channel and I have never seen so much constant SPAM. I realize a lot in this rookie channel probably are not new to the game, but for those that are new to the game the insane amount of SPAM has to be giving a negative impression to them. It is impossible for them to ask a question because of it and blocking is not much help as new Bot names are created. IMHO, the value of keeping this clean has to be worth the cost. Even if that means it is done manually by one of the channel volunteers

For now it appears to be a two step process -
1.) Petition 2.) Block
Rinse and repeat every 15 mins. ________________ Poor is the nation that has no heroes. Shameful is the one that, having heroes - Forgets them!

Yup, petitioning works. Sometimes instant, sometimes a bit slower. Though I wish they came with airmiles.
What wonders me though if I petition those idiots and they are back within seconds, is that the GM taking care of the spam, doesn't hang for a while in Rookie to clear the chat from these obnoxious bunch of low lives. They do stop at times when their first spam post is their last. How hard can it be to scoop the rookie chat out of EVE, and place it as a floating window on the PC the GM's are doing their other stuff on, so they can glance over it from time to time and wack the bastards out of rookie on the fly.

When a GM is in the channel they boot/etc the bot instantly. So naturally my question is - why isn't there a GM in that channel 24/7?
Petitioning may work but why should the players have to moderate that channel for CCP to save them like $8/hour they can pay someone to do that?
Edited to add: The last game I came from was a MUD run by volunteers and they had a fully moderated newbie channel. It can't be that financially taxing to do.

Uhm.... they are human beings and need sleep?
But, you are right, it could be way better monitored then its now, just only for the spam. Maybe if they can spread out the ISD's more evenly over rookie, it would have more effect. Now you have times with zero ISD's or 4 at the same time, slightely drunk spamming help channel.....

or you can just kill the rookie channel and ask on local. usually the ppl in rookie systems would help too?
btw, how much they advertising for now? used to be something like 5 bucks for 100mil. -- just wondering cuz of all the discussion about GTC price skyrocketing.

How hard would it be for them to filter out the obvious and consistent content of the isk sellers? Or, alternately, place restrictions on trial accounts using the chat channels. Something simple, like restricting the "lines per minute" spoken. Or even better, have a GM in the channel who can block spammers immediately.
I know man-power is limited, but keeping Help and Rookie clear would only require partial attention of one person at a time. It's amazing how this still continues to be such a massive problem with all of the technical resources at hand.

Honestly a rookie chat that veterans can't join to give help is a doomed idea anyway. Rookies giving other rookies help is more often the blind leading the blind.
The Help channel is not great but its way better than rookie help.

You could always apply to become a volunteer if the spammers are too annoying. But yeah... maybe there should be someone to watch the channels 24/7.

What is the botter thinking? Spamming new people making them disgusted with the game and leaving, doesn't that cut into their market? You deserve to work in a crummy little shop for almost nothing, grow some brains!

There, fixed it for you.
Yes, the nuub channels are hopelessly useless. That's why noobs should have the ability to close that damn channel permanently. I was helping a co-worker join the game and whenever I leaned over his shoulder to give some advice there was that stupid channel. He hated it, but could not get rid of it, finally formed his own 1-man-corp just to escape that one channel.
OFC, he got wardecced 3 days later *LOL*. Poor little griefer was surprised when my main wound up in his corp and chased him around the newbie systems preventing him from getting e-z nuub kills for a month... and costing him a handful of T2 ships.

According to a post made a while back on similar topic, though regarding bad language rather then bots, The "chat server" lacks the ability to really filter content effectivly. They are working on it, and we have seen a great deal of progress, so now its a matter of bots fighting counter-botters.

Maybe put out huge bounties on the spammers and kill them all.

Trial Accounts are 3 secs per line. Really annoying when you are helping multiple n00bs ( some info is helpful to all and thus doesn't warrant its own channel ) and dont want to flood out everyone elses conversations so you break it up into lines and have to spend 15 minutes typing stuff out, waiting, rinse repeat. Most people will read this thinking it's part of my post, when its actually my sig :P

Edited by: Veldya on 18/09/2008 04:17:05 There is a simple solution, start blocking ip ranges, if there are players in the regions that get blocked they can just apply to get an account unblocked. Registration in a blocked region should be pretty brutal. I bet the IPs of the spammers come from specific regions and not all over the world, you might inconvenience a handful of people requiring registration but it will eliminate the thousands of trial accounts created to just spam. There is no point policing if it is going to take them 5 minutes to create 3 more spam bots.

So since I have made this post I have not see any isk spammers in the Rookie Help. And there was an added benefit I did not think about, ISD is now answering all the questions from the new players. Just a day ago 90% of questions went unanswered or were answered very poorly.
Without new players (not just second accounts) this game will stagnate so it is great to see they are not ignoring them. Great job CCP!

Not long ago I was just writting something the same: "great job CCP, haven't seen any isk spammers in weeks" and at that same moment they where back...
Well, we can always hope.

Not much of a solution. The macro-automated-minimal supervision spambot accounts could spoof their IP just as easily, or even easier then I could. What might add less then thirty seconds to their new account creation macro would inconvinience players all over the world, plus added GM time for verifying the "am not macro, please unblock" messages from the real and fake account holders.
As for a preemptive block of certain ranges, racism aside, I have never seen it proven that all macros come from certain areas, etc, plus the as-mentioned ip-spoofing.
Some kind of clever limit to new account creation? yes please. but Not if it comes with dumb limits.

I never realized that a verteran player couldn't get into rookie help until I started my latest alt. I hadn't really been on there for the last 2+ years that I've had my main.
It was actually fun helping out the new players on the rookie channel with their questions. Although you end up answering the same question over and over a lot.
I was also able to give a few some isk to help them get started. I sorta miss the days when 1M isk was serious money.
