Long story: The only software that I have that I would have to put speech marks around the word "legitamate copy" is Adobe Thingy CS3. All the rest of my software is actually legitamate, whereas Adobe Encore for example, is just... "legitamate", if you catch my drift. If I eventually go professional with my video work, or somehow end up with a couple of grand spare, then of course I'll go to Adobe and spend the vast fortunes they want for me to be able to drop the speech marks. If you catch my drift. Wink wink, nudge nudge. (I just wanna make it clear that I'm against "legitemate" stuff, my CD collection is huge, my software collection is pretty sizeable, all my Microsoft products are legit etc etc, I just can't afford ú2000 for something that's just a hobby atm)
Short Story: Anyhoo - Encore goes through the splash screen type thing and loads everything up, but then it never actually opens, it just vanishes completely. I need to make a DVD for my mum's Birthday, and would like suggestions on cheap DVD-making software. I've done it before on my old machine, but can't remember how - I think it was in a Nero product of some description.
Also: On the look out for songs with Val or Valerie in the name. I've got Valerie by Mark Ronson & Amy Winehouse, Valerie by the Zutons, Ride of the VALkyries (geddit?), and Valerie by Steve Winwood (the one that Eric Prydz turned into 'Call On Me').

Legitimate - Nero's DeathStar blob of software does indeed include a DVD-making utility.

If you're using Vista, it has Microsoft DVD Maker included.
WinXP had Windows Movie Maker - not sure if that had a DVD export function, as my laptop doesn't have a dvd burner, but you could check. _______

Nudge nudge wink wink say no more.
In seriousness, that's a strange problem with Encore. AFAIK CD3 is the latest version so there's no upgrade path as yet, but it might be worth trying to reinstall it. Also, Premiere Pro can export to DVD directly. You won't be able to do more than one timeline or any flashy menus, but if you just want a single movie, Premiere Pro -> File -> Export.
If not, while Nero does offer an authoring program, there are many others you might like to try. uLead and DVDIT seem popular for the home market. -------------
