This has been brought up before, but since Wired had a article about it, I got reminded of the madness all over again.
Linkage
Personally I think this is just a way to get children used to the basic idea that there are "good guys" and "bad guys" and make sure they know who are the good guys (the US) and who are the bad guys (the muslims). Who needs a crusade when you have the gaming market and the Internet...
This kind of thinking actually promotes hostility and fear, but then again, I guess that is the plan.

It happens. However, chat and mail in any game is no more secure than instant messaging or webmail, and probably no less monitored, although that is not saying much.

sheesh, they're doing it wrong, that "possible scenario".
If terrorists really wanted to convene in a virtual space and plan attacks with game-lingo, they'd choose the least-known MMO with the worst GM/dev team that works on it to provide the maximum "crowd cover".
EVE Online is an example

Ok, imagine Jita 4-4 is the White House, i'm gonna be the president, and concord is gonna be the secret service *undocks*.
Seriously? Thats what i'm paying 1/3 of my income in taxes to pay for? If this is what the government is worried about, just move the Graveyard back about 100 miles, no one wants to make that run, even terrorists. Honestly it's possible that the email system would be less monitored than [email protected], but i really dont think any serious terrorist organization is going to practice their attack in an MMO in the way the article suggests. I appreciate that they are looking at every angle, but i hope this was just a memo that got a look, not a serious avenue they are going to pursue.

Quote: The planning ground is World of Warcraft. The main target of this possibly nuclear strike: the White House.
No way!
Quote: There's been no public proof to date of terrorists hatching plots in virtual worlds.
So why post a stupid article?
Quote: The fictional plot was originally developed by ... The terminology doesn't match World of Warcraft lingo...There is no "White Keep" in World of Warcraft; "Dragon Fire" is a spell in EverQuest...But the banter is reminiscent enough of World of Warcraft talk, to give outsiders an idea of how such a conversation might go down
This article is the most inane drivvle I think I've ever read, and I picked up a copy of 'The Sun' once. Not heard of wired but I don't think anything you find on a site like that should be used to make your point.

Edited by: Somealt Ofmine on 19/09/2008 21:25:10 This has been going on for a long time in Eve. You just have to know the code words:
Lag = Prison Cyno-Jammer = Washington DC Blob = The Regular Army Titan = Nuke Nano-Gang = Terrorist Cell Roaming Nano-Gang = Terriorst Plot Goon = Public Opinion / Mass Hysteria NC = European Peace Protesters Gate Camp = Assassination Plot BoB = Weapons of Mass Distruction
If you happen to be spying and you hear plans that don't seem to be making any sense, decode them with this list. You may have uncovered a terrorist plot.

As far as I can tell, this was a thought exercise and nothing more. Sounds like the pentagon guys were just rolling the idea around in their heads to see if it could be done. Of course, the media gets hold of the story, blows it all out of proportion and yells "The terrorists are planning to kill you in a game. Ban all online games for the sake of the children!" |

The scary bit here is that that actually makes enough sense for the FBI to get on.
No, seriously, use this list to "decode" normal EVE PvP talk. -
