I know there is cool stuff, in space, where there is no icon to warp to. But my question is, how do you point your ship in a certain direction? Or is all cool stuff in the direction where you jump in from. With a MWD, turn it on and hope you find something. ---------------------------------------

Most of the cool stuff I've found are around planets or moons.
Don't see how you'd find something 20 or 30 au out in the middle of no where.
Some agents give missions ( though I haven't done many ) they may give you a bookmark?

Well, my buddy told me he found a station in the middle of nowhere by using his MWD. He just turned it on and waited to see what pop up and something did. Think it was a pirate scout base. ---------------------------------------

Which system or region was that in? and was it showing on the scanner at all?

If he found it with a MWD, then it was still close to an orbital object of some kind. Most likely it would have been visible on the scanner had he looked. MWDs move you very very fast on the local scale of say a belt or station, but at a system level, they're practically the same speed. Even if you managed to get up to an obscene speed like 5000 m/s with an MWD, it would still take you just under a year to travel a single AU.
It's just barely within the realm of possibility that your friend found a pirate outpost hidden a few hundred kilometers away from a nav point, but the chances of finding such a thing are still remote in the extreme.
For the moment, you're best off looking around moons and planets for such things, or fishing for rumors from agents. Be sure to use your scanner. Things like pirates outposts may not show up as an icon in your radar or on screen, and from more than a few km away you're unlikely to spot them with the naked eye.

There's a ton of stuff to be discovered out of map range. What I've noticed is that regions in a system are actually divided into 'grids' where you can only see items within a 300km^2 grid or so. Ever fight pirates in an asteroid belt only to have them suddenly disappear (along with most of the asteroid belt) yet still be able to attack you (you can still kill them even though they are invisible)? You really entered one grid while the pirates are in another.
Noticing this and experimenting with it a bit, I decided to play around with it a bit, attached a rare MWD and pointed in one direction and flew for a while. What did I find? 2 asteroid belts not on the map full of bistot and crokite with NO pirates to be found. So I now pretty much have my own little secret belt all for myself and can maximize my cruiser for mining purposes since there is no danger. So exploring off the beaten path really is quite rewarding.

Heh, you obviously haven't used the scanner much. I have warped to a planet I know has a hidden object and hit the scanner. What do I get? Nada.
So start hitting the mwd a bit.

micro warp drive, it is something that boosts your speed by a large amount. Main Everlasting Vendetta Veteran Member of the Stain Alliance |

I take it that is your cruising speed and not warp, else it would be silly.
How would running around faster help you find something? I would think scanners would cover more area.
Is there a way to improve your scanning/ability to detect stuff?
I am a noob, and now that I know to look, I will be looking.

The scanner is much more effective then a MWD for finding thing. You have quite a good range on your scanner and the ability to find things fairly fast if you know how to use it to its fullest capacity.

MWDs were good for PVP, they are nerfed now so that if you take them into pvp... your a sitting duck with very little shields and a reduced capacitor. It was fun running around with 4 MWDs.... you wouldn't believe how easy it was to shock people after get out of a warp jam, by turning on all MWDs and blasting off at around 1200 Km/s. Though you do get alot of comments about cheating... The funny thing is by the time they figure out your gone, your about 10,000 Km away. And there is no... I repeat 0 chance to chase you. The only problem is that your capacitor is gone in a split second.

this is all well and good and yes the scanner does find things for you, but.... when things get beyond a set range theres no way you can warp to them.. as far as i know, if theres anyway to use the scanner to better effect than it does already id love to know. ______________

Yep.. there sure is..
Use the direction tab and get a fix on where the item is that is too far to approach or get a loc on. Once you are down to about a 5degree angle sort by distance and either bookmark and warp to the last item you do have a distance on then rescan to see if it is now within range to approach. Or just start flying that direction until it gets into measurable range.

Does anyone have an example of this that they wouldn't mind revealing? I'd love to try this myself, but I have a feeling that warping around randomly trying to do directional scans is a recepie for frustration.. the last time I fiddled with directional scans the blasted thing wouldn't even show me things that were on my radar, like the gate I was approaching.

Thor, 5000m/s is not a very obscene speed. I've travelled at over 50.000 m/s using 3 mwd's and with 4 of them..well, you do the math.
Would still take forever to reach anything though, so you're right about that. Just felt like nit-picking. :)

Well yes, some truly obscene speeds are possible using multiple MWDs.. but how long can you sustain that speed? From my experiments during Armageddon even a battleship's capacitor can't support a single MWD indefinitely. 3-4 would have to drain the capacitor of even a very high end ship almost immediately. And 10 seconds spent traveling at 50km/s followed by 600 seconds waiting for the capacitor to recharge.. well, that's pretty simple math too, and your long term speed winds up being about 820 m/s. Hardly fast interplanetary speeds.

I second Thor's request.
Can someone please give us an example of somewhere that they dont mind sharing, just so we can see that it works and how to do it. ---------------- ~= Askari =~

it would be a lot easier if the scanner use and range was affected by mods (scanner boosters, etc) and skills (scanning ability, etc), that way players that wanted to be explorers could work at it. ______________
