I look on the contracts market, and I see TONS of BPCs... for everything you can imagine, mostly ships.
So it got me thinking... I've played on and off for years and I don't think I've EVER bought a BPC.
Why do people buy them? I mean, I've checked several times over the last few days and the market is PACKED with bpcs. So I'm guessing people DO buy them. I just don't understand: expensive as hell for the seller to buy the BPO to copy it, and I wouldn't think that mins + bpc would be cheaper than just buying the item?
So why don't people just buy the items themselves?

1) A starting manufacturer can make profit by buying a BPC and manufacturing items from it
2) Small corp either in low sec/0.0 can buy BPCs to manufacture items they need in hostile environment without the risk of loosing expensive BPOs
3) Casual inventors buy BPCs to invent (if they can't afford a hisec POS or just don't want to be bothered with it's maintenance) and still make profit
4) You can resell BPCs
5) I buy BPCs

Interesting. So in the end, BPC + minerals <= typical market cost? I'm a bit surprised. (But that's because I know almost nothing about Eve industry.)

It's not true for all BPC market but I don't have a hard time to find BPCs that I can profit from.
Also, I forgot already invented T2 BPCs. You can find and buy T2 BPCs, manufacturing from them and still make profit. Though, it's not something an industrial dedicated player would do.

Traditionally it has been because it is still cheaper to buy the BPC + build than buy off the market, alot of this is because making a BPC is less effort than gathering the minerals and actually building the item. When invention was introduced this ballance did change for a while with BPC prices increasing heavily as they are consumed in invention. Now they're mostly reasonable prices again and are used for both inventors and people building their own ships who can't yet afford to buy a BPO or won't build enough to pay one back.

Edited by: Revolution Rising on 21/09/2008 02:18:34 It's a good way to stock up on cash when you are a new miner.
10 run BPC for dominix = 2-10m.
Net Profit for all 10 = 50-100m.
Cashflow = 500m for all 10.
Getting a 500m cashflow from 2-10m investment is ridiculously worth it as a miner - where when you are mining it can be MUCH harder to sell minerals bit at a time and have to update your prices day to day to keep up with market fluctuations.
And you'll still make 50-100m on top of the mineral prices as well.

Typical? very tin margin.
But you can move a lot of BPC to 0.0 or some distant region with very little risk and then build your stuff there.
Moving the completed ships and modules is much more complicated.

well I've bought battleships BPC's in the past,in this case it was a raven cause it was cheaper than buying a raven from the market, and I already had a good stockpile of minerals from reprocessed rat loot.30 mill or so for a researched raven bpo vs 150 million on the market was better for me at the time, plus BPC's are much easier to get into 0.0 sec space than a battleship.

Also u get caught when the market changes...
For example, when the last patch came out the electronic attack frigs were introduced...
If someone wanted to start making griffens into kitsunes, then they would need to buy 5-10 griffen bpos, research them, copy them, and then continueously copy them...
At that moment, it might be easier just to buy the bpcs...
Also many people do exploration... At some point you will end up with a small but steady stockpile of datacores... I think we ended up with 1400minmatar starship ones after a week of fun in 0.0 with radar sites...
At that moment u have a tough question--do we switch bpc plans to minmatar ships? Invest in lots of minmatar ship bpos or just go and buy bpcs to burn off the datacores...
Lastly one of the other posters was correct...
When moving bases to 0.0 or low sec, the best idea is to get a covert ops of needed bpcs and then just use that instead of moving bpos.

If you're new to the production game, it can be worth it to use BPC's to build items. It'll help with the initial investment while you gain capital to purchase, and research, the bpo.
Its also worth it for the casual inventor, as has been said above.

What I find more interesting: is it worth buying let's say a Raven blueprint, reserach it to decent levels and than make copies to sell?

BPC's are very beneficial for a young manufacturer.
BPCs in contracts cost much less than a BPO BPCs on sale usually have pretty good material level etc -> compare to having to research a BPO first before making good profit with it, research slots in stations are usually permanently clogged full too so youd need a POS.
Selling BPCs doesnt seem like big profit, but I suppose its not much of an investment either for someone who has access to POS facilities.
Just my views on things.

Just remembered another reason, say for example Bomb BPOs, cost 250m each, you can make 1000 run copies in about a day, one 1,000 run copy is likely to do anyone building for themselves for years and years, and will sell for probably less than 1m isk. There are a few BPOs out there like this, they have ridiculously short copy times for what are valuable BPOs building valuable items that people won't need too many of. Buying a BPO to build off in this case is a huge waste of isk, as you could gain the same effect with just a BPC.

Payback for most BPOs doing this is in about a year-ish. Then you still have the BPO. But mind that BPCs must be sold on contracts, and you only have a limited number of contracts you can make at once, and you have to sell them either individually (to get the best price) or discount heavily to sell packs of multiple BPCs. You will also need a POS to make copies at a reliable rate.
Certainly many people have made isk doing this, most of the isk to be made though is when the items are new and there are fewer BPOs out there, or when they get newly introduced to invention.

Just asking for clarification: Can you "invent" a T2 BPO out of a T1 BPO? I can't find a definitive answer to this anywhere...

Edited by: Gavin DeVries on 22/09/2008 20:19:15 If I'm not mistaken, you first have to copy the T1 original, then research (invention) from the copy. If successful, the result is a T2 blueprint original that can then be researched for material efficiency, production efficiency, and copied. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |

No you can't. Invention only creates Blue Print Copies (BPC's)not Originals.

You are mistaken. Invention only creates Blue Print Copies (BPC's) never Originals and before you ask Tech 2 BPO's were distributed in a lottery a while back and thatĘs done now. There were a set amount and thatĘs it, the only way to get a Tech 2 BPO now is to buy existing ones through contract.
