Originally a paintshop was planned, it was even in for a while in beta. Not sure if it'll ever get back in.

Oh man CCP if only you would throw that paintshop into Eve i would love you long time! That would give such individualization to our personal ships but also may cause some more lag which we all do not want. But still it would be so awsome! AAAHH MY HEAD FELL OFF! |

I wanna revoice my idea of say, a tri-color scheme, where there are 3 elements on each ship:
Primary color (majority of body of ship - the hull), secondary color (sub-element of ship - the underhull, for example), and highlights (the bits on each ship that stand out, like antennae, wings, etc). Then provide 16 colors for each element.
:)
16*16*16 = 4096 different schemes. If you go up to 32 colors (and why not ;) you can bump that up to a measly 32 thousand color schemes :D
Disclaimer: I have no idea how to change the current system (which does have skins, obviously) into one that would support a scheme like that :P --- Mining & Transport - Logistics Division - Hadean Drive Yards

I suppose a two tone color scheme would be ok. But they should be shadowed to prevent seriously eye sore bright colors.
2 tone like Homeworld would be coo though. And it's only like 6 to 12 bytes more data. |

If a paintshop feature would be introduced in Eve, Im sure it would only have a cleintside effect. In other words only the person who changed the coloring of his ship could see it. That way noone would be affected by lag while loading other ppls graphics.

Well, if there was a paintshop you wouldn't be able to use it freely, each ship might have a few different "skins" to choose from, I think that would be about it.

Better idea:
A paintscheme for your ship (only you see it), and then everyone else still has the default scheme as far as you are concerned?? Does that make sense? So if I want to have a bright pink ship, at least all other Caracels out there wont look pink too!

it wouldn't be that big a deal with two tone RBG coloring.
Just like HOMEWORLD nStuff..
Where each ship would have parts that the color can not be changed. And they would also have area's assigned to a base color, and then other parts assigned to a secondary color (like stripes on the ship).
It's not like people would draw tatoo's on the ships.
And as far as lag? No way. it would only be like adding a dozen letters to the end of each players ship name. I mean if you name you ship, "ShipName" the color scheme would only add as much lag as naming your ship, "ShipName123456789".
If it was done correctly.

the paint scheme could be optional - like with characters portraits when you click them __________________________________________

There is another way to accomplish this as well........perhaps. Nascar racing by Papyrus has the ability to 'paint' all of the vehicles...and only the client sees the new job. HOWEVER.......these paintjobs are "trade-able" and downloadable so that 'carsets' or in this case SHIPSETS could be offered by eve OR 3rd party sites.
When both/multiple clients have the 'set' downloaded, then all who have the download see the same paintjobs. It was a brilliant stroke by papyrus to allow league and team racing, and I'm not sure why that scheme 'couldn't' work here.
Just a thought.

cricky that's one hell of an old game 10 years in fact ... unless you're talking about another more recent NASCAR racing, then i'm holding the olive green box in my hands right now the specs sticker reads 386DX/33 or better (486DX2/66 Recommended) 6Mb memoery (will run in 4Mb with reduced graphic detail)
although i never got to play it online back then (i was 10.. ) i do indeed remember the paintshop!

A way to control the data transfer volume caused by such custom paints if to make it optional.
Currently a character portrait isnt loaded automatically as well, you have to request it (by clicking on the chars or "show portrait").
I think this could work the same way with custom ship paints. In massive battles, you better think twice if you wanna load every ships custom texture. But in normal situations it would be too bad.

custom textures would be a bit much.. But colors is nothing. just a few numbers.

i say these 3 things >< first base color (most of the ship ;p) second will be like the color of the "widnows" or whatever those are..( pretty sure there windows >< wouldnt it look cool to have red windows ><) and the last should be a decal that could be set, on preset places on each ship. ( i would think the special ships like imperial apoc shouldnt be changed.... but hey whatever)

well based on my knowledge of 3d-graphics rendering i dont think custom painting and skinning would be much incompatible in theory. with layered shaders u could have on basic skin for armor plates, lights etc, with a custom painted color scheme shining through.
this said i dont know quite how eve renders its models, but it can be done
the problem would rather be the limits for paint designs, i guess the "choose color for ship part" model ala EnB would be the most feasible
cheers Rezi

How about this for an idea, you have your 2 tone coloured ships. But you can also create your own smallish decal which must be black and white, as in Half-Life. This decal could then be painted on the side of the ship & you could then select the colour (which turns the white parts of the decal to your chosen colour for example)
This would cause only a small amount more data transfer yet would further personalise ships. Alternatively how about painting the corp logos on the side of their members ships? The images are already there...

To reply to the bit about the nascar racing being old.....the painshop and such for that has been in since the first release, yes. The current iterations are from the Nascar2003 season release which is a 'tad' newer than what you saw. The paintshop and mod painters sites are huge for that, as the multi-player racing scene is fairly large. The ability to swap paint jobs and download 'sets' was the thing i was referring to........as for this MMO being able to do the same thing, that is something I'm pleading ignorance to....twas just an idea based on another genre' that IS doing it.

lol tokka.....just thinking about the first version of that....got me all 'misty' as well. that was the beginning of 'hawaii' and the 43 racers on the track via dialup and the player introduced leagues and competition....was pretty dam cool.
Eve has my heart, but that online experience in league competition and such....was pretty sweet as well.
Online communities, regardles of 'type' or genre become some of the tightest knit groups of interaction and friendship (regardless of corporate/alliance flames) there is. Too bad some of our r/l leaders don't do it. we could have the wars 'here' and a beer 'there' instead of the continual problems solved with real guns. ahh well...."in a perfect world", eh? :)
