Edited by: Dirk Magnum on 24/09/2008 21:57:27 We've all heard it. It inevitably follows every asinine rant, miscreantic rambling, interminable text wall, immature whine, and eye-rolling development "idea" to have ever stained this forum. There are numerous variations of the exact phrase, many of which are grammatically unsound, but the point is always clear: someone has stuff, and another wants it.
When did this phrase originate? Who was the first to have uttered it? Has it ever worked? I would imagine that the first two questions are unanswerable, although I'd guess in the context of MMO forums that it predates Eve. As for its success, I have my doubts about that as well. Most of the people who are quitting the game are either storing the gear for themselves on the off-chance they come back, or they already gave it to their corpmates and friends. If that's the case, then asking someone for their stuff is a flawed concept, because the destiny of the "stuff" in question has already been determined by the owner.
Now you may say that the phrase has taken on a sarcastic nature by this point, and that nobody really expects to receive any stuff. I wouldn't want to argue that point, because the sarcastic nature of the expression is often self-evident when it appears on the forum. This fact is evidenced to some degree by the use of the expression in threads where the whiner is not actually vowing to quit the game. If they aren't quitting, why would they pass out their stuff to anyone, let alone someone on the forum? It is additionally evidenced by the more recent introduction of the phrase "confirming that I will be the one to receive the character's stuff" (and its derivatives.) Obviously the one making the statement is not really receiving any of the stuff, and does not expect others to believe that they are, but the "confirming[...]" phrase is clearly the offspring of the sarcastic use of "give me your stuff" since it acknowledges and builds upon the accepted humorous value to it.
But I'd also contend that the phrase would not continue in common use on the forum unless at least some people, deep down, held out hope that they might in fact receive some of the enigmatic "stuff". As I said before however, this outlook is flawed, since the stuff's fate has already been determined by the owner, whether they are really leaving the game or not. I have, through exhaustive scientific and philosophical toil, developed a workaround to this, which I will now state very clearly before I end this post:
My in-game name is Dirk Magnum. I have only this one account, although I also have a second character who I don't train skills on. I am, with this statement, PREEMPTIVELY asking you to GIVE ME YOUR STUFF. Give it to me WHEN you decide to leave. You are not leaving this game right now, so you have not decided what the ultimate fate of YOUR STUFF is. Therefor, when you DO decide to leave, you will have already seen this request for YOUR STUFF, and I hope you will take that into consideration.
Thank you.

i always try to pretend i don't want them to leave in the hopes that they will give me their stuff because im not asking them for their stuff.
It has worked in the past, only they usually just throw me some stuff they have, and dont give me their 'stuff', but just whatever is left in their pockets after their 'stuff' has already been given away.

For some reason the whole "give me your stuff" thing has always reminded me of yard sales and George Carlin. You need to get your shit out of the way of my stuff!
It's probably because I'm so unorganized and have crap strewn all over the galaxy. So my Assets dialog looks like 50 different yard sales because I move around alot and can't be arsed to haul it about with me. And the thought of dumping someone else's crap on top of that mess is just not a pleasent one.
So, for a change of pace: Keep Your Stuff! I don't want it.
Or give it to Dirk Magnum. That works too.

Well played. Also, I too would like to pre-emptively request anyone's stuff.
However, I'm not so discriminating that I want it from people who are leaving - if you wish to deliver stuff to me prior to this point ... I accept. Consider this a 'stuff whenever' request.
Thanks. *cough* Moar Dev-Blogs! *cough* ----------

I had a dude give me 480 million isk after I Flipped a can he had outt hat had a true sansha large armor rep and a 480 mm guristas rail gun and a few other things in it, I also nticed he was in a nemesis watching when I took the stuff and he did not target me or anything, I told him thanyou in local cause people thought it was a trap but I took the risk cause I was in a rookie ship and was on a trial alt. And the dude just sent me 480 mil after that was weird, wasnt even 480 either it was 483,456,984.12 that he sent so I figured he quit playing and just gave me his entire wallet contents. I do wish he had gave me the nemesis to though lol. |

Humorous intent or not, you scratch a fairly interesting topic. I would like to add to the study this little bit of experience:
In my time of playing WoW back in 04-05 somewhere around then, it was fairly common to give your stuff away when leaving the game, or even when switching servers and starting a new character.
Players would often do this as a way of finalizing their departure, and on many occasions they would not have any particular friends or guild mates whom they felt deserved the stuff, and would therefore give their stuff to a complete stranger or passerby.
In conclusion: It was therefore also common to genuinely ask "Can I have your stuff?" when someone was genuinely speaking of leaving. And as we can see this phrase has been in existence for quite some time, and I expect it has been around since the early days of online gaming. I'm sure there were some bored players sitting around in the old everquest and ultima online and what have you, uttering the phrase at appropriate times.

I'm pretty sure that one isn't related to "can I have your stuff". It's just something people do on character sales, the OP (usually the character being sold) will say somewhere in the post that another character will receive the ISK for the transfer, and then that character posts in the thread saying "confirming I will receive the ISK". Of course, some people thought it would be funny to replace "ISK" with "stuff" and use it in place of the more popular "can I have your stuff".
