Just been pondering. If somebody kills loads of people, why do we call them the worst mass murderers?
Surely they are the best mass murderers?
I'd be the joint equal amongst the worst mass murderers of all time, as I haven't actually killed anyone.

Mass Murder is generally held to be a bad thing. Thus, the modifier "worst" can apply just as much as "best" can. It is ambiguous, I admit.

**puts on a thinking cap and ponders**
the best mass murderers do not get called mass murderers at all, since they're smart enough to not let people realize that it's the same person that is killing all these people...
but besides that, yeah, as CynoAlt1 said... if you're the best at something really bad, you're generally referred to as the worst... it's a hangover from 'the worst kind of man', I imagine.

The best mass murderer is someone who kills lots. The worst killed so few it almost doesn't earn the label "mass". That's how I see it.

Wait, are we talking mass murderers or serial killers?
Worst mass murderer in recent memory would be the 9/11 hijackers
Worst (or best) serial killer? ******?

Spree killing and Mass Murder are overlapping but then again I felt like the OP wanted to talk about serial killing.

"Most efficient" might be an emotionally-neutral term. Then again, when it comes to mass murderers, I suspect most people don't want an emotionally-neutral term.
And the highest-scoring in terms of raw numbers have to be some of the officers working at Dachau and Belsen - whoever actually had the job of turning on the gas. ________________________________________________

Well actually he's not, because he didn't actually do it... I guess the best serial killer was Jack the Ripper

war criminal (self explanatory) mass murderer (usually bombers, or terrorists?) spree-killer (think disgruntled employee) serial killer ((usually) a single individual that (also usually) kills people in a similar fashion, or in other ways get all their kills linked together to form a pattern).
the first three have some overlap between them. the fourth is a bit of a loner.

This may be so, but - as with Stalin - in not one single case has he actually killed any of them. ________________________________________________

Pathetic amatuers.
Lickspittle wanna-bes whose paltry efforts pale into insignificance beside the life's work of the one, true master of enforced euthenasia Harold Shipman, the "Old Dear hunter", the gold medal winner in the Olympics of Death.
Locking him up couldn't stop him either. Deprived of the opportunity to better his score by the humourless UK state, he did what he did best with the only target left; himself. What commitment! We may never see his like again.

Technically untrue.
Whilst you may not actually have "popped a cap in someone's donkey" as I believe it is called, you are part of a technologically advanced civilisation that pollutes and poisons, and as such are guilty of pushing folk forward, by small increments, to meet their maker.
Burn fossil fuels, serve someone alcohol, sell someone else pre-packaged over-processed drek masqeurading as food (I'm looking at you Aldi employees), or do anything that might conceivably help those that do, and you are as guilty as the rest of us.

Guilty, perhaps, but not of murder. Causing death by negligence is not murder. ________________________________________________

Depends on whose definition you use.
One of the great things about the English language is that it is so versatile, with a word for almost anything (apart from the area at the back of your knees... although I'm sure some med student will pop up here to furnish us with the anatomically correct term) and a number of meanings for many words.... including murder.
Also, just because petrol companies, and other big business concerns (including the food industry) are rarely brought to book for their misdeeds, doesn't mean it's legal; just that they have decent lawyers & lobbyists and friends in high places. After all, where would Ken Clarke's BAT money have come from if the tobacco industry had been called to account for the deliberate suppression of evidence that smoking is harmful in order to profit from people's addiction to a drug (arguably...for the pedants) far more harmful than many (currently) illegal ones?
The murderous side effects of modern life are apparent everywhere, yet most are content to sit back and watch rather than directly do something about it, or even vote someone in that will.
I stand by my pedantry and refute yours; just because it's currently legal and accepted, doesn't mean it's not murder.

As far as I am aware a mass murderer needs to kill four or more in one location in one event.
This would put the likes of Timothy McVeigh up there as the worst, along with the 9/11 attacks.
If you are interested, other cases you may wish to research are the New Mexico State Prison riot, Rev. Jim Jones and the quite bizarre case of Sylvestre Matuschka.

Even were it illegal, it still would not be murder. It would be causing death by negligence - manslaughter at worst.
To be classed as murder required that the objective of the exercise is to kill someone. Shell don't go out and kill people on purpose. Even their detractors wouldn't accuse them of that; though they might well argue that Shell know their actions will cause deaths and don't care, not one of them will claim that Shell take those actions because they will cause deaths. ________________________________________________

I only know the story of him through the Jello Biafra / D.O.A. song, oddly enough titled "Sylvestre Matushka"!
A case of a guy who got sexual kicks from watching trains crash, mixed with the fact he was a demolition explosives expert. Not the greatest mix!
Imprisoned before World War II, then released because the (Hungarian?) resistance needed demolitions teams.
# Some say that's how he died. Was he in Korea? No one knows. Any trains been wiped out Near a nursing home in your town lately? #

Mass murderers kill a number of people in a short period of time, making it pretty obvious there's a connection. You're thinking of serial killers.
