Edited by: Super Skulls on 30/09/2008 01:22:10 I'm running two accounts at the same time on my laptop:
Acer TM8204 wlmi Vista SP1 ATI mobility x1600 2gigs ram 7200rpm HDD
I'm getting 20 or so FPS constant in space and in station, but when the action starts going down it gets low, like 5 or so FPS. One account is on premium graphics and the other is on basic, and all the settings are pretty low. One is "fake" fullscreen at the native resolution (windowed and centered 1680x1050) and the other is at 1440x900 windowed. I don't want to run both on standard graphics (non-premium)... is there a thread with some tips on running two instances better on one computer?

cacheing lowers load times but if you dont have alot of ram (and sence your on a laptop you dont) it decreases preformance, by turning off the cache you will get slightly longer load times but increased preformance
and to turn it off press escape then look for cacheing (cant remember which tab) and use the dropdown box and select off
EDIT: also jsut noticed that you do have 2 gigs tam (yay for paying attention \/) so id set it to low

i run two instances of eve on 2 20 inch widescreen monitors and cruise the net on the third.
runnin win XP, pretty good gaming rig, but the only tip i would say forsure is to have sound off on the alt account, if your on your main, and vice versa.
the sound is the number 1 monster in more than one instance of EVE.

Run both on the same resolution, preferably the same resolution as Windows.
Reduce EVE's graphics cache to Low or Off on both clients.

Turning off the cache seems like the absolute WRONG thing to do, but you guys know more than me... plus I thought 2 gigs of RAM was alot! Times have changed I guess. I'm going to try it out and see how it goes. |

Well I'll be damned... FPS during action in space has jumped to 30 on both instances JUST by reducing the cache to low. Who would have thought? Thank you guys :) |

Go with what these smart people have said. Cache off, maybe turn off premium on one of the clients. I also have a copy of EVE placed in an alternate directory, which according to a corpmate, could possibly speed things up as well.
I have similar specs to yours, but I use a laptop with another screen plugged in on the side.
I also have both clients at fullscreen, but on the same screen (inefficient? yes.) This causes me to blink back to desktop for a bit before returning to the other client. I also experience some lag on ONE of the clients at a time (not both). But that's probably because I am running Premium on a non-desktop computer. Go figure.
Enough of me. Have fun multiboxing. |

Yup - I just set it up like this and I'm getting 35 fps in space on both clients
Client 1 - fake fullscreen 1680x1050, medium graphics settings (all checkboxes clicked), premium graphics Client 2 - windowed 1440x900, sound off, low graphics, standard graphics
Very happy now :) :) :) |

Also, you cabn manually change grahpics settings in your videodriver. Lowering the base quality settings can help quite a lot. |

Yup, times change.
Not long ago 2GB was alot, now it is okay if not slightly below average. 4GB pushes the limts of what a 32bit OS can handle. Now you need to be pushing 8GB with a 64bit OS to have "alot" of memory.
Eve can use plenty of memory: 750MB per session is not unreasonable with the caching set at the default.
Turning down the cache will help keep its footprint small enough that you can hopefully avoid too much swapping.

run in windowed mode. Takes some getting used to but you can switch between the 2 easily. I only use my alt for hauling while im mining so its easy. Missions might be more problematic. |

make sure your Vista desktop graphic effects are turned off, I noticed a huge difference when I turned off the opaque window thingy. |

Not mentioned but.. If I run premium I have to run it fullscreen or I get fps drops, if I run classic it's np running windowed. When running fullscreen there's a bug that sometimes freezes/instant d/c's a client if you alt-tab, so generally I tend to either run premium if I use 1-2 accounts, and fullscreen.
When you start run 3-4 accounts and other programs, window mode is almost a necessity and premium loves to kill your fps at that point. My hardware is quite sexy, but I recently blew up my gfx card so using a replacement one atm, could be what's killing it for me. With your specs, and considering you only run 2 clients.. I'd vote you either run both fullscreen and premium, and learn the 'slow' alt-tab (pause a sec before executing it, less chance the client kills, if you do it really quick it tends to crash you frequent).. or you run both classic windowmode.

One of the best lag solutions for 2 client use :
Turn off station environment.
You will find that one client will always lags when your alt is docked. Turning off the station environment dramatically reduces it.

Use the standard client. Turn off "sun is occluded by ships" turn off all sound (if you run sound on both clients or even 1 it completly kills performance) use windowed mode to alt tab between the two.
Also.. it seems to help to have to different installations of eve standard. I have 3 instances of eve on my PC. I call them EVE and evelite1 and evelite2. evelite is used for double accout fun.
With this setup you should be able to run 2 eve clients on a mediocre computer. |

I think your taking the "Power of two" the wrong way. Your not suppose to run both clients during pvp, or mission running. Minning, or escort for a frieghter yes...level four missions no...

Oh I don't know about that. My cap boosting basilisk alt is a great boon to my mission runner Raven. Lets me perma-run an XL-shield booster.

And my covops alt is quite handy for tracking targets or helping getting my sniper ships set up on gates. -

My laptop with the following specs:
2.8ghz Core 2 Duo 2 GB 800 MHZ DDR2 RAM Radeon Mobility 2600 HD 120 GB 7200 RPM HD Windows XP SP3
can run 3 instances of classic Eve with most of the effects turned on and I can get a 4th one if I'm willing to deal with some lag.
My home pc with the following specs: 3 ghz Athlon 6000 4 GB 800 Mhz DDR2 RAM Geforce 9800 GTX 1 x 80 GB WD Raptor 10K HD, 1 x 120 GB WD Raptor 10K HD Windows Vista Business x64
can run 7 instances(mining alts ftw), without any lag or latency between the various windows. I do have to do some modification such as shutting aero off, deactivating the vista UAC, and forcing the clients onto one of the cpu cores.
I have only been able to do this with the classic client. When I tried to do this with the premium client, I was not able to do more that two instances, even on my hope pc. |

it used to be alot easier, with the introduction of premieme graphics i actually noticed a slight fps increase, however a subsequent patch seemed to make the clients increasingly unstable when running multiples for long periods of time, i'm guessing something to do with the way memory is handled
The tips i would have, turn the cache to low or off, secondly run in windowed mode. I've noticed tabbing between clients is much more stable and less liable to crash when running windowed. If you get Eve Launcher tool you can run in windowed mode repositioned so it looks like fullscreen, i even get better fps this way and can still fraps etc perfectly fine |

Copy your client into a second folder so you have 2 clients open rather than 2 instances of 1. |
