When planned EDT is coming, skill training which stops in it should make you get warning before quitting. ------------------------------ Adding bounty will not make it easier to kill me. |

or you could take the extra five minutes of time and plan ahead
seriously, i konw that sometimes downtime is exteneded, but i mean, if you get all paranoid about losing a whoping 5-6 hours of training time, then you need to quit eve for a while
ive probablyh lost 2 or 3 days of train time total due to skills being finished in the middle of downtime (exteneded or not)
if its like a matter of life or death, quit eve for a while and come back

Bolded the important part... -PLANNED-, meaning you should know it's coming and set a long skill. ---

It also helps when you login to give the news section on your right, a minute, you therefor wouldn't have missed the announcement. Other tip: bookmark the main site of EVE, login 1-2 times a day, so you won't miss the headlines.

Nah, I think CCP babysits for us enough....Besides if it's planned, you already know its going to be downtime. Set a longer skill.

I missed about 6 months of skill training when I quit once. Extended downtimes no longer concern me. -

The Community Team arranged a news item along with a forum thread in the EVE Information Portal. Operations added a warning in the MOTD.
I think most people will agree that we really do give as much information and notice as we can

To be honest, I miss extended downtimes and patches all the time, not everyone reads the news. Personally Id prefer an evemail since I do read those

Hmm. Whilst I haven't missed such a notice in quite a while (last one was when you gave less than 24hrs notice, and being one who has a busy life that means that I didn't notice until after it had started).
I'm not sure the way in which it is done is quite as effective as it could be, I mean, there are really annoying popups that are modal and appear an hour and 15 minutes before the start of the regular downtimes, but I think those are un-necessary in comparison to what the OP is suggesting. Also the news items on the right, are a mixture of 'maybe interesting to some people' and 'absolutely essential' items. It would be GREAT, if we could select only to see the important news items if we wished, or have them highlighted / in a separate RSS feed etc.
I think it's all the RP stuff that turns a lot of players off reading the news, which realistically is the only place you get a noticeable advanced warning of the patch (days out). Nice big safety orange text or something please :p
The information portal forum is a crime against forum software, really that sort of thing should be sorted by the thread creation date (or better, user selectable) rather than by last post date, because you have very old threads at the top and it's hard to find the new ones quite so easily.

Apparently the one thing which does get people's attention is the server actually going down, so you should take the server down 24 hours early with the MOtD saying 'the server will be down tomorrow'. -

Edited by: Maria Kalista on 30/09/2008 14:05:19 Sorry Dox, but if you have time to read your email you have time to login to EVE's mainpage and glance over the latest news.

One thing is that on the off chance that the 1hr and 15 minute before downtime popups do have the extended DT info in them, because people are so used to clicking 'ok' on these out of habit, I doubt many people actually read them. They might as well announce that clicking ok will trash your hangar, most people wouldn't notice, they are trained to hit OK. I would only put these on before extended DTs. A more non-obtrusive shut down timer like the 5 minute one (though even less obtrusive) would be better than the modal windows.

In-Game message:
[ 2008.09.30 09:59:44 ] (info) Dear players, the servers are going down for the deployment of the Empyrean Age 1.1.1 patch. The downtime will begin in 1 hour at 11:00 GMT. The servers are estimated to be back up at 16:00 GMT. Please make sure your characters are out of harms way before the servers close.

-The EVE Online Team
In other news, the Red Leicester in my sandwhich today was off, and almost made me vomit. On the plus side, I found a licorice allsort in my pocket, and judging by the fluff, was approximately 2/3 years old. Needless to say, this is one form of gastronomic delight that does not improve with age. I kept it down though, ah it was epic. God I hate this office.
